Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the revolutionary years between 1979 and 1992, it would have been difficult to find three political systems as different as El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, yet they found a common destination in democracy and free markets. Paige shows that the divergent political histories and the convergent outcome were shaped by one commodity: coffee.

Book excerpt: Levels of Power: The Diplomat The demand for oil and natural gas is never ending and the South China Sea possesses the largest underwater stockpile in Southeast Asia. Nearly every country in the ASEAN organization, Association of Southeast Asia Nations, cross-claims portions of the islands and riffs doted throughout the sea. However, all must beware of their largest neighbor, China, who also claims nearly all of the same body of water for their own use. When war breaks out between China and Vietnam, the United States and India prepare to honor their mutual defense treaties with Vietnam and to keep the shipping lanes open to their merchant fleets. United States Senator Randy Fisher is in Southeast Asia to attend the ASEAN annual conference and is the only American in the theater who can prevent a full-scale war. His strained relationship with the current American President is nearing its own breaking point over their domestic policies differences. With little support from the White House, he risks his career and perhaps his life to prevent naval forces with nuclear weapons from confronting each other in one of the busiest body of water across the globe. From the Philippines, to Brunei, Vietnam, and into the heart of the Chinese Communist Government, the American senator will travel to unravel the well-made plans of the architects for China's military expansion into the South China Sea.

Book Synopsis David Makinson on Classical Methods for Non-Classical Problems by : Sven Ove Hansson
Download or read book David Makinson on Classical Methods for Non-Classical Problems written by Sven Ove Hansson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume analyses and develops David Makinson’s efforts to make classical logic useful outside its most obvious application areas. The book contains chapters that analyse, appraise, or reshape Makinson’s work and chapters that develop themes emerging from his contributions. These are grouped into major areas to which Makinsons has made highly influential contributions and the volume in its entirety is divided into four sections, each devoted to a particular area of logic: belief change, uncertain reasoning, normative systems and the resources of classical logic. Among the contributions included in the volume, one chapter focuses on the “inferential preferential method”, i.e. the combined use of classical logic and mechanisms of preference and choice and provides examples from Makinson’s work in non-monotonic and defeasible reasoning and belief revision. One chapter offers a short autobiography by Makinson which details his discovery of modern logic, his travels across continents and reveals his intellectual encounters and inspirations. The chapter also contains an unusually explicit statement on his views on the (limited but important) role of logic in philosophy.
Book Synopsis Women and Alcohol in a Highland Maya Town by : Christine Eber
Download or read book Women and Alcohol in a Highland Maya Town written by Christine Eber and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing roles and rituals involving alcohol are a major source of power and identity for women and men in Highland Chiapas, Mexico, where abstention from alcohol can bring a loss of meaningful roles and of a sense of community. Yet, as in other parts of the world, alcohol use sometimes leads to abuse, whose effects must then be combated by individuals and the community. In this pioneering ethnography, Christine Eber looks at women and drinking in the community of San Pedro Chenalhó to address the issues of women’s identities, roles, relationships, and sources of power. She explores various personal and social strategies women use to avoid problem drinking, including conversion to Protestant religions, membership in cooperatives or Catholic Action, and modification of ritual forms with substitute beverages. The book’s women-centered perspective reveals important data on women and drinking not reported in earlier ethnographies of Highland Chiapas communities. Eber’s reflexive approach, blending the women’s stories, analyses, songs, and prayers with her own and other ethnographers’ views, shows how Western, individualistic approaches to the problems of alcohol abuse are inadequate for understanding women’s experiences with problem and ritual drinking in a non-Western culture. In a new epilogue, Christine Eber describes how events of the last decade, including the Zapatista uprising, have strengthened women's resolve to gain greater control over their lives by controlling the effects of alcohol in the community.
