Book excerpt: Alicia Thorne and a few others have been given a vaccine that can extend life span by centuries. Why then have so many people had to die for it? As a young doctor walks a desolate hospital hallway, while working a lonely night shift, he realizes that he is being pursued. Cautiously, he writes a plea for help in the in-patient chart of Alicia Thorne. His small note is the key to finding out the horrid secret behind the vaccine and more importantly, how to destroy it. In spite of his efforts, that night the young doctor is murdered in the gross pathology department, while Alicia Thorne is discharged form the hospital and her in-patient chart is carted away to Medical Records to collect dust, until one hundred thirty-two years later. Throughout the story, we catch glimpses of Dr. Holtz’s life—past, present and future. We learn about Mr. Helfrick, a man who knows nothing of his beginnings nor if he will ever have and end. We later realize that he is patient zero and that it is through his cells that the vaccine is born. We learn of a future age-conscious society, far more sophisticated than our present society, yet all too familiar.

Book excerpt: We know the tales of Columbus and Captain Cook, yet much earlier mariners made equally bold and world-changing voyages. In Beyond the Blue Horizon, archaeologist and historian Brian Fagan tackles his richest topic yet: the enduring quest to master the oceans, the planet's most mysterious terrain. From the moment when ancient Polynesians first dared to sail beyond the horizon, Fagan vividly explains how our mastery of the oceans changed the course of human history. What drove humans to risk their lives on open water? How did early sailors unlock the secrets of winds, tides, and the stars they steered by? What were the earliest ocean crossings like? With compelling detail, Fagan reveals how seafaring evolved so that the forbidding realms of the sea gods were transformed from barriers into a nexus of commerce and cultural exchange. From bamboo rafts in the Java Sea to triremes in the Aegean, from Norse longboats in the North Atlantic to sealskin kayaks in Alaska, Fagan crafts a captivating narrative of humanity's urge to challenge the unknown and seek out distant shores.

Book excerpt: Bourdieu's Secret Admirer in the Caucasus is a gripping account of the developmental dynamics involved in the collapse of Soviet socialism. Fusing a narrative of human agency to his critical discussion of structural forces, Georgi M. Derluguian reconstructs from firsthand accounts the life story of Musa Shanib—who from a small town in the Caucasus grew to be a prominent leader in the Chechen revolution. In his examination of Shanib and his keen interest in the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, Derluguian discerns how and why this dissident intellectual became a nationalist warlord. Exploring globalization, democratization, ethnic identity, and international terrorism, Derluguian contextualizes Shanib's personal trajectory from de-Stalinization through the nationalist rebellions of the 1990s, to the recent rise in Islamic militancy. He masterfully reveals not only how external economic and political forces affect the former Soviet republics but how those forces are in turn shaped by the individuals, institutions, ethnicities, and social networks that make up those societies. Drawing on the work of Charles Tilly, Immanuel Wallerstein, and, of course, Bourdieu, Derluguian's explanation of the recent ethnic wars and terrorist acts in Russia succeeds in illuminating the role of human agency in shaping history.

Book excerpt: The Goblin and the Ocean's Secret Summary of this Story: "The Goblin and the Ocean's Secret" is a children's fairy tale about a curious and brave monster named Gob. Gob is amazed by how big the ocean is. He can see it from his home, which is in the middle of a thick forest near the water. He decides to explore the ocean to find out more about it, so he packs food and drink into a small backpack. Gob spends a long time making his way through the thick jungle before he gets to the beach. He wades into the water. After swimming for several hours, he finally gets to an island in the middle of the ocean. In a small cave on the island, Gob finds a treasure chest full of things. One of them is a small gem that pulsed with a soft light. As soon as he picks up the crystal, he realizes that it is the key to opening the secrets of the sea, and he feels a strange rush of energy. Gob makes his way back to his people, the goblins, who are having a hard time making it through the harsh winter and are quickly running out of food and supplies. He shows them how the crystal can use the power of the ocean to bring warmth and plenty to their town. He also tells them how this is done. Gob and his friends come up with a way to use the power of the crystal to heat their homes and grow food. But their victory doesn't last long because a group of evil goblins who are jealous of Gob's success attack their town. They are willing to do anything to get the crystal because they want it for themselves. Gob gives the order for his friends to run away, but he stays put to fight the enemy. He uses the power of the sea to give himself a quick burst of strength and throw them crystal high into the air. The evil goblins are scared away, and the crystal shines brighter than ever before. But winning does not come without a cost. After letting out too much energy, the crystal breaks into a million pieces, which then scatters all over the forest floor. Gob's heart is broken, but he quickly realizes that the pieces of the crystal still have their life force. He puts all these parts together and comes up with a new way to use the power of the ocean. It's not as strong as the original crystal, but it's enough to support his group and keep them warm and fed. Gob realizes that the ocean's main secret is not just the energy it has, but rather the chance to work together and help each other that it represents. He has decided that information is not something that can be owned or controlled. Instead, it is something that should be shared and used for the good of society. He is grateful for the help and support he has gotten from his friends and advisors, and he knows that he needs to keep working with them to build a better future. In the end, Gob and his people learn to live happily with the sea and use its power to keep themselves and their community alive. When Gob looks out at the ocean and sees how big it is, it reminds him that he still has a lot to learn and understand. On the other hand, he is no longer afraid of things he can't know. He is sure that if he and his people work hard, don't give up, and stick together, they will be able to overcome any problem and use the power of the sea to build a better future for themselves and their society. When it comes to learning and understanding, "The Goblin and the Ocean's Secret" is an uplifting story that shows how important it is to be persistent, dedicated, work together, and be thankful. This lesson is meant for kids and teens. It also shows the possible benefits and risks of seeking knowledge and understanding, as well as the importance of putting information to use for practical reasons and the good of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first two months of 1958 President Eisenhower ordered the creation of a new department at the Pentagon, the Advanced Research Projects Agency, or ARPA. One of the first tasks appointed to ARPA was to choose which branch of the military would handle the countrys space program. Almost arbitrarily ARPA chose the Air Force. This decision stood for just a few months before the President announced the formation of NASA, but it became clear to the heads of the U.S. Army that they were running second in a two horse race. The Pentagon would only be allowed into space if they could persuade the President that there was a military need to be there. Almost immediately the Air Force and the Army produced their rival visions for operating off-world. The Army team led by Generals Medaris and Trudeau turned to Wernher von Braun whose team presented a long-term plan based around their new one-million pound rocket the Juno V; but the Air Force went all-out and showed its plans for strategic domination by building a moon base. In March 1959 the Army responded with its own vision for a moon base which they called Project Horizon. The plan was conceived and presented to the President in June 1959 and was immediately recognised as a useful beginning for a civilian moon base, and so the report was reduced from 800 pages to 400 pages and given to NASA. Now, exactly sixty years later, three of the four volumes of the original military report are available here. Volume III still remains classified as SECRET. Reproduced from the actual copy of Horizon which was used to create the edited Civilian version. This version includes the original colour graphics.Bonus: In 1966 the Army was still working on its plans for space combat and some of those plans are included here as a bonus to Project Horizon.
