Book Synopsis Not Without Madness by : Fabrizio Della Seta
Download or read book Not Without Madness written by Fabrizio Della Seta and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these 12 essays, the author explores the concept of opera as a dramatic event and an essential moment in the history of theatre. Examining the meaning of opera and the devices that produce and transmit this meaning, he looks at the complex verbal, musical and scenic mechanisms in parts of 'La Sonnambula', 'Ernani', 'Aida', 'Le Nozze di Figaro', 'Macbeth' and 'Il Trovatore'. He argues that approaches to the study of opera must address performance, interpretation, composition, reception, and cultural ramifications.
Download or read book Western Plainchant written by David Hiley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plainchant is the oldest substantial body of music that has been preserved in any shape or form. It was first written down in Western Europe in the eighth to ninth centuries. Many thousands of chants have been sung at different times or places in a multitude of forms and styles, responding to the differing needs of the church through the ages. This book provides a clear and concise introduction, designed both for those to whom the subject is new and those who require a reference work for advanced study. It begins with an explanation of the liturgies that plainchant was designed to serve. It describes all the chief genres of chant, different types of liturgical book, and plainchant notations. After an exposition of early medieval theoretical writing on plainchant, Hiley provides a historical survey that traces the constantly changing nature of the repertory. He also discusses important musicians and centers of composition. Copiously illustrated with over 200 musical examples, this book highlights the diversity of practice and richness of the chant repertory in the Middle Ages. It will be an indispensable introduction and reference source on this important music for many years to come.

Book Synopsis The Language of Stravinsky by : Angelo Cantoni
Download or read book The Language of Stravinsky written by Angelo Cantoni and published by Georg Olms Verlag. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Language of Stravinsky proposes new methods of looking at Stravinsky’s work, more than 40 years after his death. It considers both his individual compositions and the evolution of his work over his lifetime. The main purpose of the book is to analyse and clarify the inner coherence of Stravinsky’s music, despite the wide variety of styles, instrumental combinations and theatrical modes with which he worked. Though his career is often seen as falling into three distinct periods – Russian, Neoclassical and Serial – his work as a whole is threaded through with a language unique to himself as a composer. The analysis presented in this account identifies the basic elements and grammar of this underlying musical language. Each of the eight chapters of the book focuses on one aspect of Stravinsky’s musical language, followed chronologically within that chapter. The same works are therefore often studied in different chapters, looked at from a different musical perspective. This analysis of Stravinsky’s music over time provides major new insights into his work.

Book Synopsis Recondite Harmony by : Deborah Burton
Download or read book Recondite Harmony written by Deborah Burton and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Puccini? Most debates about the composer are focused on his cultural and musical identity: is his music traditional or progressive? The thesis of this volume is that the diametrically opposed forces of the traditional and the progressive live together in Puccini's music, embedded deeply within his harmonic constructs and in many musical parameters. Recondite Harmony is a study of all of Puccini's operas examined through a primarily analytic lens. It offers essays on salient aspects of each of the operas while tracing in them both progressive and traditional elements. The volume is divided into two parts: in the first, approaches that inform the entire corpus of Puccini's operas are examined. The second half of the book is devoted to brief essays discussing interesting aspects of each of his operas. Techniques in each opus that merit analytic attention are highlighted and discussed in relation to the drama at hand, individuating more fully musical aspects special to each score. Included are also previously unpublished source material and autograph sketches.
