In this study, I aimed to identify critical transition competencies for the preparation of special education teachers working in the area of transition for individuals with ID. To elicit information specific to this purpose, a web-based survey was conducted and sent to secondary special education teachers in Saudi Arabia. I administered the survey by sending a series of invitations via e-mail, including a brief description of the study, the estimated time for completion, and a link to the web-based survey. Descriptive statistics, a Pearson correlation coefficient, and t-tests analysis were used to analyze the data.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Millions of high school students are receiving special education services from teachers who may be inconsistently performing competencies during transition planning that leads to sustainable, postsecondary success. Secondary special education teachers' frequency of performance of transition competencies during transition service delivery are essential to fulfilling their duties and responsibilities towards effectively implementing the Individualized Education Program of students with disabilities. The purpose of this descriptive study is to examine the correlation among secondary special education teachers' perceptions of their transition competencies' frequency of performance, during annual transition services. This study employed a quantitative methods approach involving an adapted version of the Secondary Teachers Transition Survey to examine the association or relationships among the variables. This study's participants consisted of 80 purposefully selected, secondary (high school) special education teachers of students with high incidence disabilities, receiving special education services within an urban, north Georgia school district. The data analyses revealed significant relationships among teachers' perceptions of their frequency of performance across the transition domains. Additionally, the findings revealed a difference between teachers' reported levels of self-efficacy and their frequency of performance of transition competencies across the domains. The findings of this study were anticipated to have a manifold impact on transition competencies acquisition, frequency of performance and, evaluation resulting in improved quality in the provision of transition planning services, an aspect of the provision of special education services. This study serves as a fundamental decision-making component in PERCEPTIONS OF TRANSITION COMPETENCIES 4 the systems-change process within the special education leadership framework and adds to the body of empirical research to inform the practice of special education teachers' preparation to positively affect teachers' perceptions of their own selfefficacy as transition planning facilitator. As well, this study serves as a reference for professional development offerings regarding transition competencies across the local, state and federal educational arenas towards improving the quality of life outcomes for students with disabilities, as they transition into postsecondary educational, competitive employment, independent living, and preferred leisure/ social settings as young adults.

Book excerpt: Considerable research demonstrates that evidence-based practices (EBPs) improve post-school outcomes for students with intellectual disabilities. Secondary transition EBPs are used by special educators to prepare students with ID for post-school education, employment, and independent living. The most important and effective practices in transition education include student-focused planning, student development, interagency collaboration, program structure, and family involvement (Kohler & Field, 2003). These practices, however, are often not implemented due to lack of knowledge, skills, and training on the part of educators (Anderson, Kleinhammer-Tramill, Morningstar, Lehmann, Bassett, Kohler, & Wehmeyer, 2003). This mixed method study examined secondary special educators' and leaders' perceptions, knowledge levels, and use of secondary transition EBPs for students with ID in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Potential barriers to implementation of transition services for students with ID were also examined. This study surveyed 176 special educators and leaders of secondary students with ID. Ten parents of students with ID were also interviewed about their perceptions and knowledge of intellectual disabilities, transition services, self-determination skills, and community services for their children with ID. The study found that secondary special educators and leaders had little knowledge, training, or preparation to use secondary transition EBPs. Secondary special educators and leaders felt unprepared to use secondary transition EBPs in their classrooms. They reported that university teacher preparation programs did not provided adequate knowledge to implement secondary transition EBPs. The study identified barriers to implementing transition services in Saudi Arabia. These barriers, as identified by respondents, included lack of coordination between schools and businesses in job placements for students with ID, lack of community services and resources, lack of community-based vocational instruction programs, inadequate systems for follow-up on transition planning, and lack of administrative support for funding to implement transition services. Finally, the study found no significant differences across the three themes of knowledge, preparation, and collaboration based on gender, educational level, teaching experiences, and job title. The one exception was seen in the number of transition services courses taken, which affected the level of knowledge of the educators who participated in the study.

Specifically, this study focused on the purpose of a transition plan, the most effective components of a transition plan, and the impact of an educators' preparation had on the fulfillment of the transition planning process. The researcher studied the results of 28 secondary special education teacher participants from six school districts in Pennsylvania. Participants were provided with an online survey comprised of Likert-scale and open-ended response questions. Additional feedback was elicited through individual interviews. The survey and interview questions were designed to elicit participant perceptions regarding the purpose and components of a transition plan and the participants' preparation on the transition process. the focus of this study. The findings of this study showed that secondary special education teachers had an understanding of the purpose of a transition plan consistent with federal regulations. Special education teachers believed that the individual students were key contributors and components to the development of an effective transition plan. The transition goals included within a plan were identified as essential to the planning process. Preservice preparation received by special education teachers was perceived as inadequate in relation to the fulfillment of the transition planning process. Special education teachers expressed the need to improve current training practices related to transition planning. These findings concurred with previous research and offer the need for further research related to the transition services provided to students with disabilities pursuing postsecondary opportunities.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that special education teachers' beliefs about community-based vocational instruction (CBVI) are important for the effective implementation of vocational education for students with intellectual disabilities (ID). This is important because CBVI is rarely implemented in Saudi Arabian special education institutes and regular high schools for secondary students with ID. Addressing this practice within a Saudi context might draw more attention to this population's need for CBVI to be prepared for postschool employment. This study utilized web-based survey methodology for data collection. The survey, which was adapted from the American context, was designed to investigate special educators' perceptions toward the implementation of CBVI. Significant changes were made to the survey based on the theory of planned behavior and in order to fit the Saudi context. The survey was distributed across Saudi Arabia to all secondary special education teachers in special education institutes and public high schools that have programs serving students with ID, and the response rate was 38%. The results indicated teachers' positive perceptions toward implementing CBVI. They believed that CBVI is an effective strategy to prepare students with ID. Teachers believed that implementing CBVI could increase training and employment opportunities for those students. The findings indicated that the majority of special educators have not implemented CBVI for different reasons, such as lack of administrator support, not enough staff and funding, and not enough cooperation with employers. However, the findings predicted that teachers have the intention to implement CBVI if they can access more training, experience, resources, and support. The results indicated statistically significant differences among respondent groups' mean scores when it comes to implementing CBVI based on gender and teaching setting. Implications and recommendations are also discussed.

Educational policy plays an essential key to provide meaningful inclusion provisions to all types of children for academic and social success, but it is not clear if the policies adequately support inclusive education in Saudi Arabia. Much of that research conducted in the United States has demonstrated that teacher' perceptions and knowledge of inclusion and students with disabilities are the most significant influential factors for implementing effective inclusion practices in inclusive settings. To date, there has been limited research conducted on teacher knowledge and perceptions of inclusion in Saudi Arabia. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate Saudi teachers' perceptions and knowledge about inclusion and students with special needs. A total of 299 general and special education teachers participated in this study. Findings revealed that there was a relatively low level of knowledge about inclusion and students with disabilities among the Saudi Arabian educators. Findings also revealed differences in perceptions by disability category. Saudi Arabian teachers had the most negative perceptions of students with severe intellectual disabilities and the most positive perceptions of students with learning Disabilities. Qualitative analysis revealed that participants had minimal knowledge about evidence-based strategies to teach students with intellectual disabilities in a general education classroom. Implication for practice and research were discussed in this study.

Book excerpt: The recent focus on transition from school to working life has created a growing concern in Oregon about teachers with elementary certification as their initial certification who earn a special education certificate and teach students with disabilities in secondary settings. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among initial certifications (elementary, secondary, and K-12), where Oregon high school special education teachers received the major part of their transition skills training, and their self-perceived needs for further transition skills training. The population for the study consisted of 213 secondary special education teachers of students with mild disabilities from throughout Oregon. The instrument was a survey-type questionnaire that included 14 transition skill competencies for teachers. Subjects were first asked where they received the major part of their training in each of the transition competency skills. Next, they were asked to rate their self-perceived needs for further training in each of the transition skills. The instrument design was validated through a Delphi procedure. Data were collected during the spring of 1987 and the fall of 1988. No significant statistical relationships were found between initial certification and where teachers received the major part of their transition skills training, or their self-perceived needs for further training. However, three major implications became apparent from the data. First, decisions regarding coursework could be examined at the preservice level. Next, opportunities for preservice teachers to participate in team decision-making activities should be examined. Lastly, personnel inservice preparation programs at the district level should be examined to ensure that transition skill competencies for teachers are included. Recommendations included follow-up studies to find out if the size of school, type and level of endorsement, major and minor fields of study and years of teaching may have an effect on transition skills training of secondary teachers.

These technologies have contributed in facilitating cognitive development as well as learning processes for students with disabilities. One of these emerging technologies is the tablet device and its applications. Due to increasing demands to integrate the latest technology into educational settings, previous studies have looked at the potential of adopting tablet devices and their applications as instruction technology tools in special education classrooms. This case study sought to explore male special education teachers' perceptions toward using tablet devices for teaching purposes in Saudi Arabia. The objectives of this case study were 1) explore male special education teachers' perceptions about using tablet devices for teaching purposes. Their perceptions were measured based on eight variables (voluntariness, relative advantage, compatibility, image, ease of use, trialability, result demonstrability, and visibility) derived from Rogers' and Moore and Benbasat's theories; 2) Examine the impact of teachers' characteristics of age, years of teaching experiences, educational background, and school level being taught on their perceptions; 3) Identify obstacles hindering the adoption of tablet devices for teaching purposes; and 4) Explore the roles of school leadership concerning the use of tablet devices inside the school from the perspectives of special education teachers. This case study employed explanatory sequential mixed methods design, which involves two data collection phases (quantitative → qualitative). The quantitative phase is the primary phase followed by qualitative data collection. The purpose of qualitative phase is to provide further explanation regarding phase one results. A total of 175 participants participated in the survey phase. The results showed the overall perceptions had an overall mean of 3.4 and a standard deviation of (SD = 0.47). In addition, the results revealed that the participants had high perceptions concerning perceived relative advantages (M = 4.2), result demonstrability (M = 3.8), and compatibility (M = 3.9) of using tablet devices for teaching purposes. Whereas the participants had neutral perceptions (mean score range between 2.9 to 3.2) concerning the voluntariness, image, ease of use, trialability, and visibility in the use of tablet devices. Regarding the impact of teacher characteristics on their perceptions of using tablet devices, the multiple regression results showed that only two characteristics of male special education teachers significantly impacted their perceptions. The first characteristic was school level at which the teachers taught, which was significantly related to the participants' perceived voluntariness (p = .03) and trialability ( p = .01). The second characteristic, teachers' years of experience, was significantly related to perceived image (p = .04) and compatibility (p = .04). Once phase one was analyzed, a qualitative case study was carried out to provide further explanations of characteristics found to significantly impact the participants' perceptions about the use of tablet devices and their applications for teaching purposes. Furthermore, this phase aimed to explore difficulties hindering the adoption of tablet devices for teaching purposes as well as the roles of school administration in adopting tablet devices. In this phase six participants were selected purposefully based on their age, years of teaching experience, specialty in teaching students with disabilities, and school level at which they taught. A semi-structured interview method was used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed using a coding approach. The results from the data analysis showed that participants' years of teaching experience and school level were critical, if not vital, when it came to the use of tablet devices as an assistive technology tool in special education classrooms. These results also supported the findings that emerged in phase one. The results from the follow-up interviews showed that four major obstacles hindered the adoption of tablet devices in the Saudi special education system. These obstacles are lack of training, class management, shortage of tablet applications in Arabic, and the process being time consuming. Also the results indicated that school leadership did not support the use of tablet devices for teaching purposes due to lack of awareness and funding. Discussions, implications, limitations of this study as well as recommendations for future research are discussed in depth in Chapter 5.
