Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Pregnancy, childbirth and being a newborn are not diseases - they are special periods in human life when the risk of death or disability can be very high. Recognizing this, the last decade has brought enormous progress in science and technology into improving maternal and newborn health, such as the treatment of genetic diseases, intra-uterine surg

Book excerpt: Perinatal Medicine is a relatively new specialty, sited between the mechanistic approach of traditional obstetrics and the anticipatory and preventative out look expressed in the study of fetal growth which extends into monitoring neo natal progress and development. It is of primary importance that obstetricians and neonatologists should think alike and should not allow their interests to develop along separate lines. Frequent clinical consultations with neonat ologists cooperating in prenatal care and obstetricians visiting the special nur sery on a regular basis are essential if every fetus is to reach its full potential. Such aims have been advanced by previous European Congresses and it was our privilege in Dublin to host the IXth Congress held at the Royal Dublin Society from September 3rd to 5th 1984. Over nine hundred delegates rep resenting thirty-nine countries attended the scientific and social programme. The theme of the congress was the mature baby. The organizers felt that while major advances had been made in the management of prematurity there were still far too many mature fetuses dying and too many deaths in the nor mally formed appropriate weight for gestational age neonate. Hence antenatal fetal assessment, the management of labour including electronic monitoring in normal women and asphyxial brain damage were major topics. Pregnancy hy pertension, caesarean section, breech presentation, diabetes and unexplained mature stillbirth were workshop topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest evidence-based guidelines for perinatal management and is designed to help obstetricians and neonatologists minimize complications and offer patients the best possible care. Since 1960, there has been a significant increase in basic and clinical investigations on normal and pathological pregnancy in the developed world. This has provided insights into the physiopathology of pregnant women, fetuses and newborns and led to the development of new technologies, bringing about a new medical subspecialty: perinatal medicine. The book is divided into eight main sections: The first examines basic periconceptional care and discusses the ethical aspects of perinatology. The next section focuses on prenatal considerations, such as the nutritional aspects of gestation and puerperium, physical exercise during pregnancy, routine laboratory tests, prenatal care of multiple gestations and the role of the neonatologist in prenatal care. The third and fourth sections then explore fetal evaluation, and clinical intercurrences in pregnancy, respectively. The next section addresses pregnancy complications: prevention, diagnosis and management. The sixth section covers the basic aspects of congenital infections and the seventh examines labor and delivery aspects. Lastly, the final section includes chapters on neonatal assistance. Written by leading experts in obstetrics, neonatology, and perinatology, this thoroughly updated, comprehensive resource reflects the latest information in all areas, including genetics and imaging.

The book is organized into eight parts. The papers in Part I deal with general topics on the monitoring of newborn infants. Part II presents studies on cerebral hemodynamics. Part III focuses on blood gas analysis. Part IV examines respiratory measurements while Part V presents investigations into sudden infant death syndrome. Part VII covers applications of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Part VIII takes up neonatal monitoring technologies for developing countries. Part VIII, the Appendix, contains two keynote speeches. The first discusses the measurement of human umbilical venous blood flow in utero. The second paper discusses the measurement of fetal heart rate variation.

This book discusses the accuracy of ultrasound autocorrelation method. Organized into seven parts encompassing 45 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the various factors that cause fetal heart sounds to differ from those after birth. This text then examines the importance of phonocardiography in monitoring the fetal cardiovascular system. Other chapters consider the significant relationship between the fetal heart rate patterns and uterine activity, wherein each uterine contraction represents a stress for the fetus. This book discusses as well the assessment of fetal motor activity in utero, which became feasible after the introduction of real-time ultrasound into obstetrics. The final chapter deals with the primary causes of neurological morbidity and mortality related to determinable events in the neonatal period. This book is a valuable resource for obstetricians, pediatricians, physiologists, and biomedical engineers.

Book excerpt: Living Nature, not dull Art Shall plan my ways and rule my heart -Cardinal Newman Nature and Art 1868 One of the ineluctable consequences of growth in any field of science is that subjects of inquiry once established tend to give birth to subsubjects and that the subsubjects once established will in time undergo further mitotic division. Not so many years ago, problems surrounding the ietus and newly born infant lay in a realm almost to be described as a "no-man's land." Obstetricians properly gave major consideration to understanding and learning about processes and disorders concerned with maternal health and safety. The welfare of the infant was regarded as of secondary importance. Pediatricians on their part hesitated to invade the nursery, a sanctum regarded as belonging to the domain of the accoucheur. And the pathologist, enveloped in the mysteries of life and death in the adult, found scant tim~ for the neonate and the placenta.
