Book Synopsis Saudi Arabia in the Oil Era (RLE Saudi Arabia) by : Mordechai Abir
Download or read book Saudi Arabia in the Oil Era (RLE Saudi Arabia) written by Mordechai Abir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia has undergone a rapid social and economic transformation. When Ibn Saud declared the nation a unified kingdom in 1932, the majority of its population was nomadic and lived in a state of poverty or semi-poverty. Now the processes of modernisation, financed by the exploitation of the country’s vast oil reserves, have produced a prosperous and predominantly urban population. However, this social change has not been without its tensions; the emergence of a rising middle class has called into question the monopoly of power of the House of Saud, its involvement in the kingdom’s economy and its oil and foreign policy, while the rapid urbanisation of the rural population has eroded the traditional social structures and has not solved, but in some cases promoted, social division. This book, first published in 1988, explores the recent history of the Saudi oil state in an analysis of the struggle for social and political power in modern Saudi Arabia.

Book Synopsis Social and Economic Development in the Arab Gulf (RLE Economy of Middle East) by : Tim Niblock
Download or read book Social and Economic Development in the Arab Gulf (RLE Economy of Middle East) written by Tim Niblock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crucial importance of the Gulf region today – which may be defined as comprising the states of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, with Iran as a non-Arab onlooker – has stimulated surprisingly little interest in academic circles. Much of what has been written, moreover, focuses exclusively on those aspects of direct concern to external interests. The focus of this book is on the Gulf region as an area with its own problems of social, economic and political development. It examines the dimensions of the attempts by the governments and peoples of the area to create new social, economic and political structures – stemming mainly, of course, from their new-found oil wealth. First published in 1980.
Book Synopsis The Economics of Offsets by : Stephen Martin
Download or read book The Economics of Offsets written by Stephen Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their growth, outlined and analysed in this book, the claims and counter-claims that surround offsets have not been subjected to critical scrutiny by economists. This book fills that gap. It brings together a team of internationally renowned specialists to document and evaluate the economic impact of several countries' offset policies. In addition, the papers by industrialists and defence officials yield further insights which help to tease out which of the claims made for offsets do not stand critical scrutiny.
Book Synopsis Modernity and Tradition by : Fouad Al-Farsy
Download or read book Modernity and Tradition written by Fouad Al-Farsy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990. A country’s development does not take place in a vacuum and it was therefore essential in this earlier work that the main subject (the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s development) should be set into an historical, political and social context. The original edition includes a summary of this background information, starting with the Kingdom’s geographical location and proceeding with a brief account of its history, its political importance and its role in the world economy. Within this context, is described the development and progress of what the Kingdom had achieved, outlining the country’s governmental structure, its administrative divisions, its available investment potential, its prevailing legal and commercial regulations, and its future plans and ambitions. This new book, which has been structured to encompass all aspects of the Kingdom’s development, contains the latest statistical data on the Kingdom’s progress, together with the newly revised background information of the former book. Thus each of the books complements the other, for each records the relevant information at a particular stage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s continuing developmental process.
Download or read book Arab Resources written by I. Ibrahim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern Arab world is faced with a serious problem in the imbalance between human and natural resources. The Gulf states, with their vast natural resources, are poor in human resources, whereas in Egypt or Jordan the picture is reversed. This study, first published in 1983, considers the range of factors affecting development in the Arab world and examines the broad sectoral resources, the infrastructure for resource development and the range of problems shaping the political economy of Arab advancement. In conclusion, an analysis is made of the existing trends in the transformation of Arab society and ways are suggested in which these trends will develop over the next decade.

Book Synopsis Arab Manpower (RLE Economy of Middle East) by : J.S. Birks
Download or read book Arab Manpower (RLE Economy of Middle East) written by J.S. Birks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab world increasingly falls into two divisions, the capital-poor and the capital-rich countries (where capital means, in essence, oil). In the capital-rich countries shortage of labour is the chief constraint on growth. In the capital-poor countries analysis of the labour market is equally central, as shortage of labour compounds the already existing problem of shortage of capital. This book surveys the labour markets of the Arab world state by state, evaluating them by demand and supply analysis, and analysing the different elements in trends of employment. It forecasts the areas of stress in the next decade and suggests ways of minimising them. The book, based on much previously unpublished information and on extensive on-the-spot research in the respective Arab countries, sets out the economic and social conditions which underly the impending crisis of development in the Arab region. First published in 1980.
