Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenic rural communities across the nation and around the world have been transformed as they have shifted away from extractive industries such as agriculture, mining, and forestry and toward recreation-based development relying on tourism, vacation homes, and retirees. These communities have built new economies and identities based on local natural resources and are highly dependent on the natural environment. With these changes have come new questions: Do retirees and seasonal residents fit into their new surroundings? Do longtime and new residents share the same values and visions for the future? Do diverse community members disagree about how to manage their forest and water resources? Condos in the Woods explores how these issues are reshaping community structure, employment, and inhabitants' attitudes toward their environment in the Northwoods. Looking at trends from the 1970s to the present, this work moves from the national scale to the Pine Barrens region in northwestern Wisconsin and examines the approaches of residents to the management of their natural resources. At the heart of this story, the authors find that despite the diverse makeup of such communities, residents share many common goals and values and display more successful integration than previously expected. "Makes a major contribution linking and expanding beyond an array of research on the question: What does the growing dominance of seasonal home ownership and use mean for the communities of northern Wisconsin?"—Susan I. Stewart, USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural America is progressing through a dramatic and sustained post-industrial economic transition. For many, traditional means of household sustenance gained through agriculture, mining and rustic tourism are giving way to large scale corporate agriculture, footloose and globally competitive manufacturing firms, and mass tourism on an unprecedented scale. These changes have brought about an increased presence of affluent amenity migrants and returnees, as well as growing reliance on low-wage, seasonal jobs to sustain rural household incomes. This book argues that the character of rural housing reflects this transition and examines this using contemporary concepts of exurbanization, rural amenity-based development, and comparative distributional descriptions of the "haves" and the "have nots". Despite rapid in-migration and dramatic changes in land use, there remains a strong tendency for communities in rural America to maintain the idyllic small-town myth of large-lot, single-family home-ownership. This neglects to take into account the growing need for affordable housing (both owner-occupied and rental properties) for local residents and seasonal workers. This book suggests that greater emphasis be placed in rural housing policies that account for this rapid social and economic change and the need for affordable rural housing alternatives.

But you can head off damaging family squabbles by developing a legal structure (typically an LLC) to take care of the business of ownership. Whether you’re planning to pass on a cottage to your children, or you’ve inherited a cabin with your siblings, Saving the Family Cottage provides practical, legal solutions for preserving a beloved family property for generations to come. You’ll learn how to: keep the peace (and avoid fights) among siblings over jointly-owned property prevent a family member from forcing a sale of the cottage or cabin keep your vacation home out of the hands of in-laws and creditors, and make a smooth transition from one generation’s ownership to the next. It also includes an expanded discussion of legal issues when renting a family cottage or cabin on Airbnb, VRBO, or similar rental services.

Although this broader view of mobility is recognized, this book focuses mainly on migration or the movement of people and examines multiple dwelling as a societal response to the major influences of increased mobility and amenity tourism (visiting or residing in high quality landscapes such as mountains, beaches and forests for leisure experiences). It considers the modern-day meaning of multiple dwelling, how it affects personal identity and the meaning of 'home' and its impacts on host communities and landscapes. This book is of significant interest to those working in the areas of tourism, leisure, geography, outdoor recreation, sociology and anthropology.

Book excerpt: Homesteading is a lifestyle that people around the world gravitate toward—and for good reason. In today’s high-stress world, many people dream of heading off to their own cabin in the woods or to their large rural oasis to escape the anxieties and complexities of daily life, to live in a more natural state. Others have embraced the agricultural lifestyle of farming as a career, serving as fundamental contributors to sustaining society. With this classic guide from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), learn about the architecture of rural life and the design elements of these amazing structures. This manual, originally published and distributed in 1972, includes government-issued designs and requirements for log cabins, farmhouses, firepits and barbecues, greenhouses, storage sheds, stables, and more! Black-and-white diagrams and illustrations fill these pages, displaying the intricacies and dimensions of these incredible structures in their entirety. Brimming with ideas and inspiration, Log Cabins and Outbuildings is the perfect starting point for building your new rural retreat.
