Book Synopsis Catalogue of the Cicadoidea (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) by : Allen F. Sanborn
Download or read book Catalogue of the Cicadoidea (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) written by Allen F. Sanborn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in a series of catalogs and bibliographies of the Cicadoidea covering 1981-2010. The work summarizes the cicada literature, providing a means for easy access to information previously published on a particular species or to allow researchers the ability to locate similar work that has been published on other species. A total of 2,591 references are included in the bibliography. The book is a source of biological and systematic information that could be used by zoologists, entomologists, individuals interested in crop protection, and students studying entomology as well as anyone interested in cicadas or who require specific information on the insects. Each genus/species is identified with the reference, the page number, any figures (if applicable), the topics covered by the reference, any synonymies, and any biogeographic information mentioned for the species in the individual reference. An added benefit to the catalog is that it is the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies and new combinations through 2012. Provides nearly four times the number of references of the previous catalog, demonstrating the explosion of data since that time Contains all references found that mention a genus or species name in the work Includes more than 300 additional references that were not in the two previous works on this subject Features the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies
Book Synopsis Population Biology of Tropical Insects by : Allen M. Young
Download or read book Population Biology of Tropical Insects written by Allen M. Young and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I have tried to bring together the major developments in the study of insect populations in tropical environments. In some ways, this task has been a difficult one because conceptually it is virtually impossible to limit a discussion of insect ecology to the tropics, since the same concepts, theories, and hypoth eses concerning the mechanisms by which habitats support insect populations often apply both to temperate and to tropical regions. Thus one might argue effectively that a book such as Peter Price's Insect Ecology represents a more comprehensive treatment of insect ecology, including the tropical aspects. Yet because there has been a tremendous amount of new study on insects in the tropics in recent years, and because there has also been a strong historical interest in tropical insects, judging from early museum expeditions and medically and agriculturally oriented studies of insects in the New and Old World tropics, I believe there is a place for a book dealing almost exclusively with tropical insects. But logically so, such a book by necessity incorporates data and informa tion from Temperate Zone studies, if for no other reason than because insights into the properties of tropical environments often emerge from compariso'ns of species, communities, or faunas between temperate and tropical regions. An understanding of insect populations in the tropics cannot be divorced from a consideration of Temperate Zone populations.

Book Synopsis Insects of Panama and Mesoamerica by : Diomedes Quintero
Download or read book Insects of Panama and Mesoamerica written by Diomedes Quintero and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the highest concentrations of insect species in the world is found in Mesoamerica and the Isthmus of Panama. Yet visitors and others interested in this abudant region have until now been frustrated by the lack of literature useful for identifying and learning about this incredible array of insect life. This volume provides a wealth of information on many of the most common groups of these neotropical insects. Written for students and interested general readers as well as entomologists, the book aims to inspire increased interest in the study and conservation of this rich yet fragile biological region. The authors note that the volume was prepared with a special sense of urgency since the destruction of tropical forests has accelerated to such alarming proportions that today the Pacific lowland forests of Panama have been virtually extirpated, along with many of their native insect species, and other regions are threatened. Thus the gathering and publishing of information about this fragile and priceless natural heritage is an urgent task. The 42 chapters cover 20 insect orders and review the geology and biogeography of the area. The contributors offer a wide variety of viewpoints, ranging from natural history, to detailed ecological studies, to taxonomic treatments. The book introduces the majority of the smaller insect orders as well as diverse groups within larger orders. It is illustrated with hundreds of line drawings, distribution maps, and black-and-white photographs. A set of abstracts in English and Spanish is provided at the end of the book. This is the first work to focus on the insect fauna of Mesoamerica and Panama since Biologia Centrali-Americana, an exclusively systematic work published nearly 100 years ago.
