Download or read book Searching for God Knows What written by Don Miller and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2010-05-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With equal parts wit and wisdom, New York Times bestselling author Donald Miller invites you to reconnect with your faith. Miller shares what he's learned firsthand--that our relationship with God is designed to teach us about redemption, grace, healing, and so much more. Searching for God Knows What weaves together timeless stories and fresh perspectives on the Bible to capture one man's journey to discover an authentic faith that's worth believing. Along the way, Miller poses his own questions about faith, religion, and community, asking: What if the motive behind our theology was relational? What if our value exists because God takes pleasure in us? What if the gospel of Jesus is an invitation to know God? Maybe you're a Christian wondering what faith you signed up for. Or maybe you don't believe anything and are daring someone to show you a genuine example of genuine faith. Somewhere beyond the self-help formulas, fancy marketing, and easy promises, there is a life-changing experience with God waiting for you--it just takes a little bit of searching. Praise for Searching for God Knows What: "Like a shaken snow globe, Donald Miller's newest collection of essays creates a swirl of ideas about the Christian life that eventually crystallize into a lovely landscape...[He] is one of the evangelical book market's most creative writers." --Christianity Today "If you have felt that Jesus is someone you respect and admire--but Christianity is something that repels you--Searching for God Knows What will give you hope that you still can follow Jesus and be part of a church without the trappings of organized religion." --Dan Kimball, author of The Emerging Church and Pastor of Vintage Faith Church, Santa Cruz, CA "For fans of Blue Like Jazz, I doubt you will be disappointed. Donald Miller writes with the wit and vulnerability that you expect. He perfectly illustrates important themes in a genuine and humorous manner...For those who would be reading Miller for the first time, this would be a great start." --Relevant
Book Synopsis What Good Is God? by : Philip Yancey
Download or read book What Good Is God? written by Philip Yancey and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2011-01-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Enhanced eBook edition, Philip Yancey is featured in exclusive videos, offering insight into the stories and people he has encountered along the way. Journalist and spiritual seeker Philip Yancey has always struggled with the most basic questions of the Christian faith. The question he tackles in WHAT GOOD IS GOD? concerns the practical value of belief in God. His search for the answer to this question took him to some amazing settings around the world: Mumbai, India when the firing started during the terrorist attacks; at the motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated; on the Virginia Tech campus soon after the massacre; an AA convention; and even to a conference for women in prostitution. At each of the 10 places he visited, his preparation for the visit and exactly what he said to the people he met each provided evidence that faith really does work when what we believe is severely tested. WHAT GOOD IS GOD? tells the story of Philips journey--the background, the preparation, the presentations themselves. Here is a story of grace for armchair travelers, spiritual seekers, and those in desperate need of assurance that their faith really matters.

Download or read book Looking for God written by Nancy Ortberg and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We get so prescriptive with the spiritual life. We prepackage it, duplicate it, mass-produce it, insist upon it, and brag about it. We make it a formula. As a result, we tend to see God from such a narrow perspective. We box God up and compartmentalize Him into thirty minutes each morning. But in reality, He is waiting for us to realize that He invades all the parts of our days . . . if only we would pay attention. In Looking for God, Nancy Ortberg will inspire you to break away from the bland, formulaic approach to Christianity and embrace the often unexpected, at times unnerving, but always extraordinary power of God’s grace. As you journey with Nancy, you’ll find God in places you have never dreamed of looking, and you’ll experience faith on a deeper level than you have ever imagined possible.
Book Synopsis Finding the Will of God by : Bruce K. Waltke
Download or read book Finding the Will of God written by Bruce K. Waltke and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition of a popular, biblically based guidebook exploring God's will Does the Bible teach Christians to "find" God's "special will" for their lives? No, it does not, says respected biblical scholar Bruce Waltke, contrary to much popular evangelical teaching. In this acclaimed book Waltke clearly distinguishes between pagan divination ("guessmancy") and solid, Bible-based guidance as he distills from Scripture a six-point program to help guide Jesus followers on their life journey. This expanded and extensively rewritten second edition of Waltke's Finding the Will of God incorporates the best insights from many other books on guidance that have appeared since the first edition came out (2002), and it includes an entirely new chapter on learning to protect one's heart. This edition also features thoughtful questions for reflection at the end of each chapter.
Book Synopsis In Search of the Triune God by : Eugene Webb
Download or read book In Search of the Triune God written by Eugene Webb and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the broad umbrella of the Christian religion, there exists a great divide between two fundamentally different ways of thinking about key aspects of the Christian faith. Eugene Webb explores the sources of that divide, looking at how the Eastern and Western Christian worlds drifted apart due both to the different ways they interpreted their symbols and to the different roles political power played in their histories. Previous studies have focused on historical events or on the history of theological ideas. In Search of the Triune God delves deeper by exploring how the Christian East and the Christian West have conceived the relation between symbol and experience. Webb demonstrates that whereas for Western Christianity discussion of the doctrine of the Trinity has tended toward speculation about the internal structure of the Godhead, in the Eastern tradition the symbolism of the Triune God has always been closely connected to religious experience. In their approaches to theology, Western Christianity has tended toward a speculative theology, and Eastern Christianity toward a mystical theology. This difference of focus has led to a large range of fundamental differences in many areas not only of theology but also of religious life. Webb traces the history of the pertinent symbols (God as Father, Son of God, Spirit of God, Messiah, King, etc.) from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament through patristic thinkers and the councils that eventually defined orthodoxy. In addition, he shows how the symbols, interpreted through the different cultural lenses of the East and the West, gradually took on meanings that became the material of very different worldviews, especially as the respective histories of the Eastern and Western Christian worlds led them into different kinds of entanglement with ambition and power. Through this incisive exploration, Webb offers a dramatic and provocative new picture of the history of Christianity.
Book Synopsis Searching for God in the Sixties by : David R. Williams
Download or read book Searching for God in the Sixties written by David R. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paradigm-breaking book dares to rethink the whole of the '60s experience, not from a political or sociological viewpoint but from an historical/theological perspective. Camille Paglia wrote that 'the spiritual history of the sixties has yet to be written.' This is that book. The book's chapters each correspond to a line in Emily Dickinson's poem 'Finding is the first act.' The parallel to Dickinson's experience in the psychic wilderness demonstrates just how much the experience of the '60s was part of an ongoing American story not an aberration. Though it seems contradictory, this book argues for an appreciation of the three '60s: 1960s, 1860s, 1660s, each a chapter of the religious core of the American story.

Download or read book Finding God written by Larry Crabb and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's psychological culture, we have become a people more concerned with solving our problems than finding God. Suffer low self–esteem? Get counseling. Unfulfilled in life? Join a recovery group. But solving problems is not the point, argues Dr. Larry Crabb. In fact, whenever we place a higher priority on solving our problems than on pursuing God, we are being immoral! Dr. Crabb demonstrates that our deepest problem and worst sin is doubting God. When we doubt God's goodness, when we think that god cannot be trusted with the things that matter most, we will quietly, but with tight–lipped resolve, take over responsibility for our own well-being--with disastrous results. In his most compelling book since Inside Out, Dr. Crabb upsets the cozy Christianity of the modern believer. He reveals anew God's top priority: not our comfort and gratification, but His glory.

Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind, When God Talks Back examines how normal, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry.
