Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results on a search for the neutral MSSM Higgs bosons decaying to tau pairs, with least one of these taus decays leptonically. The search was performed with a sample of 1.8 fb−1 of proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV provided by the Tevatron and collected by CDF Run II. No significant excess over the Standard Model prediction was found and a 95% confidence level exclusion limit have been set on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the Higgs boson mass. This limit has been translated into the MSSM Higgs sector parameter plane, tan[beta] vs. M{sub A}, for the four different benchmark scenarios.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results of a search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons decaying to [tau tau] with 5.9 fb.−1 of data. The analysis requires at least one of the taus to decay leptonically, and explores three detection modes in two channels: [tau](e)[tau](mu), [tau](e)[tau](had), and [tau](mu)[tau](had), where the index denotes the type of tau decay. In all modes we explore the tagged and untagged channel. No signal is observed limits were set on [sigma](pp[arrow right][straight phi] + X) BR([straight phi][arrow right][tau tau]) as a function of Higgs mass. The results are also interpreted as exclusions of parameter space in the tan[beta] vs m(A) plane for several benchmark scenarios.

No statistically significant excess is observed in the [mu]+[mu]- mass spectrum. Results are interpreted in the framework of several benchmark scenarios, and the data are used to set an upper limit on the MSSM parameter tan [beta] as a function of the mass of the pseudoscalar A boson in the range from 115 to 300 GeV. Furthermore, the model independent upper limits are given for the product of the cross section and branching fraction for gluon fusion and b quark associated production at √s = 8 TeV. As a result, they are the most stringent limits obtained to date in this channel.

The signature is a four jet final state with at least three b-tagged jets. Signal and background acceptances are estimated using the CDF Run I detector performance. b tagging efficiencies and fake tag rates are evaluated with new Run II increased detector geometrical acceptances. Total rates are estimated from present Run I data and from Monte Carlo. The results are interpreted within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) and generalized in terms of a model independent enhancement factor.

Book excerpt: Our search for neutral Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) decaying to tau-lepton pairs in pp collisions is performed, using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 24.6 fb-1, with 4.9 fb-1 at 7 TeV and 19.7 fb-1 at 8 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes the case where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a b-quark jet. No excess is observed in the tau-lepton-pair invariant mass spectrum. Exclusion limits are presented in the MSSM parameter space for different benchmark scenarios, m h max, m h mod +, m hmod -, light-stop, light-stau, [tau]-phobic, and low-m H. Lastly, upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for gluon fusion and b-quark associated Higgs boson production are also given.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes a search for the Higgs boson, a new particle predicted by a theory called the minimal supersymmetric extension to the standard model (MSSM). The standard model of particle physics, the MSSM, and Higgs boson phenomenology are introduced briefly. The search presented in this thesis uses a single final state configuration, in which the Higgs boson decays to two tau leptons, with one tau decaying to a muon and neutrinos, and the other decaying to pions and a single neutrino. Two new methods are introduced in this analysis, the Tau Neural Classifier tau identification algorithm, and the Secondary Vertex fit tau pair mass reconstruction method. Both methods are discussed in detail. The analysis uses the 2010 dataset from the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, which contains 36 pb−1 of integrated luminosity at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV. In total, 573 events are selected in the analysis. We fit the observed tau pair mass spectrum and measure the composition of the events. The result is compatible with the standard model expectation. No excess of signal events is observed, and we set an upper limit on the cross section times branching ratio of a Higgs boson. This limit is interpreted in the parameter space of the MSSM.

This, however, is different in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), which predicts two Higgs doublets leading to five Higgs bosons: a pair of charged Higgs boson (H±); two neutral CP-even Higgs bosons (h,H) and a CP-odd Higgs boson (A). A search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into [tau]+[tau]- final states in p{bar p} collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV is presented in this thesis. One of the two [tau] leptons is required to decay into a muon while the other decays hadronically. The integrated luminosity is L = 1.0-5.36 fb -1, collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider from 2002 to 2009 in the Run II.

The focus is on Higgs events in which it is produced in association with a W or Z boson. Such events are expected to leave a distinct signature of large missing transverse energy for either a Z to vv decay or a leptonic W decay in which the lepton goes undetected, as well as jets with taggable secondary vertices from the H to bb decay. Utilizing a new track based technique for removing QCD multi-jet processes as well as a neural network discriminant, an expected limit of 8.3 times the Standard Model prediction at the 95% CL for a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV/c^2 is calculated, with an observed limit of 8.0*SM.
