Book excerpt: I have performed a search for t-channel single top quark production in pp¯ collisions at 1.96 TeV on a 366 pb-1 dataset collected with the DO detector from 2002--2005. The analysis is restricted to the leptonic decay of the W boson from the top quark to an electron or muon, tqb¯ → lnulb qb¯ (l = e, mu). A powerful b-quark tagging algorithm derived from neural networks is used to identify b jets and significantly reduce background. I further use neural networks to discriminate signal from background, and apply a binned likelihood calculation to the neural network output distributions to derive the final limits. No direct observation of single top quark production has been made, and I report expected/measured 95% confidence level limits of 3.5/8.0 pb.

Book excerpt: The cross section for the production of single top quarks in the $t$ channel is measured in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb$^{-1}$. The event selection requires one muon and two jets where one of the jets is identified as originating from a bottom quark. Several kinematic variables are then combined into a multivariate discriminator to distinguish signal from background events. A fit to the distribution of the discriminating variable yields a total cross section of 232 $\pm$ 13 (stat) $\pm$ 28 (syst) pb and a ratio of top quark and top antiquark production of $R_{t\textrm{-ch.}}= $ 1.81 $\pm$ 0.18 (stat) $\pm$ 0.15 (syst). From the total cross section the absolute value of the CKM matrix element $V_{\mathrm{tb}}$ is calculated to be 1.03 $\pm$ 0.07 (exp) $\pm$ 0.02 (theo). All results are in agreement with the standard model predictions.

Book excerpt: A search is presented for single top quark production in the s channel in proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in decay modes of the top quark containing a muon or an electron in the final state. The signal is extracted through a maximum-likelihood fit to the distribution of a multivariate discriminant defined using boosted decision trees to separate the expected signal contribution from background processes. Data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV yield cross sections of 7.1 +/- 8.1 pb and 13.4 +/- 7.3 pb, respectively, and a best fit value of 2.0 +/- 0.9 for the combined ratio of the measured and expected values. The signal significance is 2.5 standard deviations, and the upper limit on the rate relative to the standard model expectation is 4.7 at 95% confidence level.

With an event selection optimized for t-channel production, two complementary analyses are performed. The first one exploits the special angular properties of the signal, together with background estimates from data. The second approach uses a multivariate analysis technique to probe the compatibility with signal topology expected from electroweak top quark production. The combined measurement of the cross section is 83.6 +/- 29.8 (stat.+syst.) +/- 3.3 (lumi.) pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

The single t and $ \overline{\mathrm{t}} $ cross sections are measured to be?t-ch.(t) = 53.8 ± 1.5 (stat.) ± 4.4 (syst.) pb and?$_{t-ch.}$ $ \left(\overline{t}\right) $ = 27.6 ± 1.3 (stat.) ± 3.7 (syst.) pb, respectively. The measured ratio of cross sections is Rt-ch. =?t-ch.(t)/?t-ch. $ \left(\overline{\mathrm{t}}\right) $ = 1.95 ± 0.10 (stat.) ± 0.19 (syst.), in agreement with the standard model prediction. The modulus of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element Vtb is extracted and, in combination with a previous CMS result at √s = 7 TeV, a value.

The resulting 95% confidence level upper limits on the single top quark production cross sections are 6.4 pb in the s-channel and 5.0 pb in the t-channel.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the first search for electroweak single top quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data sample used for this analysis corresponds to 162 pb -1 recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. The search is performed by doing a classic maximum likelihood fit to the H T distribution in data. The kinematic variable H T is the scalar sum of transverse energies of all final state particles in the event. This variable has the advantage that its distribution looks very similar for both contributing (s-channel and t-channel) single top processes, but is different for background processes. The combination of both channels to one signal improves the sensitivity of the search. No significant evidence for electroweak single top quark production is found and we set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the combined single top quark production cross section of 17.8 pb.

It is based on a sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. A high-purity sample of t-channel single top quark events with an isolated muon is selected. Signal and background components are estimated using a fit to data. Furthermore, a differential cross section measurement, corrected for detector effects, of an angular observable sensitive to the top quark polarisation is performed. The differential distribution is used to extract a top quark spin asymmetry of 0.26 ± 0.03 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst), which is compatible with a p-value of 4.6% with the standard model prediction of 0.44.
