Book excerpt: A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson was carried out in WH 2!l[nu]b{bar b} process in p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV, where W, H, l, [nu], b and p denote either a W or W− boson, Higgs boson, lepton (electron or muon), neutrino, bottom quark and proton, respectively. The data were collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab from February 2002 to August 2004. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 319 pb−1. We select events containing a single high-p{sub T} electron or muon, a large imbalance of the total transverse energy from a neutrino and two b quark jets. The main backgrounds are the W + light flavor/gluon jets and W + heavy flavor jets processes. Requiring the secondary vertex b-tagging enables us to reject the W + light flavor/gluon jets events effectively. After all event selections, they observe 187 events which is in agreement with the Standard Model background expectation of 175.2 ± 26.3 events, and there is no significant excess originating from the Higgs boson in the reconstructed dijet invariant mass distribution. They thus set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio decaying into bb, [sigma](p{bar p} 2!W H) x Br(H 2!b{bar b}). The detection efficiency for the W H events, which is necessary for calculating the upper limit, is determined by the Monte Carlo except for the lepton identification efficiency, the lepton trigger efficiency and the b-tagging efficiency which are estimated from the CDF real data. The resultant 95% confidence level upper limits are 10.0 pb to 2.8 pb using at least one b-tagging method and 9.7 pb to 6.6 pb using double b-tagging method for the Higgs boson mass region 110 GeV/c2 to 150 GeV/c2, where the Standard Model prediction is approximately one or two order of magnitude lower than the results.

The Higgs boson is the only experimentally unconfirmed SM particle to date. This thesis documents a search for the Higgs boson in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV at the Tevatron, using 360 {+-} pb {sup -1} data collected by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II), as part of the most important quest for contemporary particle physicists. The search was for a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W{sup {+-}} bosons, where each W boson decays to an electron, a muon or a tau that further decays to an electron or a muon with associated neutrinos. Events with two charged leptons plus large missing energy were selected in data triggered on a high p{sub t} lepton and compared to the signal and backgrounds modeled using Monte Carlo and jet data. No signal-like excess was observed in data. Therefore, upper limits on the HWW production cross-section in the analyzed mass range were extracted using the binned likelihood maximum from distributions of dilepton azimuthal angle at 95% Bayesian credibility level (CL), as shown in the table below.

Book excerpt: Our physics objective is to search for the neutral on using events containing a like-sign dilepton pair in the following reaction: q{bar q} 2!W{sup {+-}} H 2!W{sup {+-}} W*W* 2!l{sup {+-}}l{sup {+-}} + X. The relevant Higgs boson mass region is above 160 GeV/c2 for the Standard Model Higgs boson where the branching fraction of H 2!W*W* supersedes that of H 2!b{bar b}. The search for this signature in the region at low mass (less than 135 GeV/c2) is, however, still important because we need to investigate various Higgs boson couplings as an essential test to convince that signals are attributed to the Higgs boson production. This channel also covers the case beyond the Standard Model that the Higgs boson couples only to the gauge bosons, which is referred to as the bosophilic or fermiophobic Higgs boson. The corresponding mass region suitable to our signature is above 110 GeV/c2 where the branching fraction of H 2![gamma][gamma] is overtaken by this channel. On the experimental side, the like-sign dilepton event is one of the cleanest signature in hadron collisions. This analysis exploiting such a distinctive signature is therefore expected to have a high potential of the sensitivity for the search of the Higgs boson. The data were collected with the CDF II detector between March 2002 and September 2003, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 193.5 pb−1. At off-line, the central region).

Book excerpt: The analysis described in this thesis is the search for the Higgs boson, decaying into bb pair, in the associated production with a vector boson, in the extreme Higgs boson transverse momentum region where the Higgs boson is reconstructed using the large-R jet technique. The use of the large-R jets allows to add a part of the phase space unexplored so far, which is particularly sensitive to possible new physics. The analysed data have been collected at LHC by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV. The same dataset has been used to perform the differential pp → ZH and pp → WH cross-section measurements used to extract the information on the Higgs couplings and to put limits on Beyond the Standard Model effects. Furthermore the analysis has been re-used to perform a cross-section measurement of the diboson ZZ and WZ processes because the diboson and the Higgs processes have a similar topology. For the first time the ZZ(bb) and WZ(bb) cross-sections are measured at √s = 13 TeV and the observed cross-section measurements are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

Book excerpt: In this Thesis a search for Higgs boson production has been performed analysing data gathered by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) from proton-antiproton (p$\bar{p}$) collisions at the center of mass energy √s = 1.96 TeV. Event selection has been optimized on Higgs decaying into W+W- bosons in order to reconstruct final states with two charged leptons formed by either an electron and a tau or a muon and a tau focusing on taus decaying into hadrons. No evidence of Higgs production has been found analysing 4.8 fb-1 of data and an up- per limit has been set on the production cross section as a function of the mass mH in the range from 130 to 200 GeV/c2 with a 95% Confidence Level. For a Higgs mass hypothesis of 160 GeV/c2 the observed limit is 33.5 times the Standard Model predicted cross section [sigma]SM while the expected upper limit for the same mass is 19.6×[sigma]SM. The high recorded luminosity along with the development of new analysis techniques are expected to improve the CDF sensitivity to the search for Higgs boson with hadronic taus reconstructed in the final state, in the mass range 130 to 200 GeV/c2.

Both on-shell (at the mass of around 125 GeV) and off-shell (above 200 GeV) Higgs boson production is studied and an excess of off-shell production with significance above two standard deviations is observed for the first time. The latter is a qualitative new way to study the Higgs field, responsible for generation of mass of all the known elementary particles. In addition, phenomenological tools have been developed with the Monte Carlo event generator and matrix element techniques for an optional analysis of LHC data. Optimization of the CMS data with careful alignment of the silicon tracker is also presented.

The search was conducted in the 2012 dataset of proton-proton collisions delivered by the CERN Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and collected by the ATLAS experiment. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 inverse femtobarns. The analysis is conducted by measuring event counts in signal regions distinguished by the number of leptons (2 same-sign, 3, and 4), jets and b-tagged jets present in the reconstructed events. The observed events in the signal regions constitute an excess over the expected number of background events. The results are evaluated using a frequentist statistical model. The observed exclusion upper limit at the 95 % confidence level is 5.50 times the predicted Standard Model production cross section for Higgs production in association with top quarks. The fitted value of the ratio of the observed production rate to the expected Standard Model production rate is 2.83 + 1.58 - 1.35.

Book excerpt: Our paper presents the search for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark, using data collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. The search exploits a variety of Higgs boson decay modes resulting in final states with photons, bottom quarks, and multiple charged leptons, including tau leptons, and employs a variety of multivariate techniques to maximize sensitivity to the signal. Furthermore, our analysis is optimized for the opposite sign of the Yukawa coupling to that in the standard model and corresponding to a large enhancement of the signal cross section. In the absence of an excess of candidate signal events over the background predictions, 95% confidence level observed (expected) upper limits on anomalous tHq production are set, ranging between 600 (450) fb and 1000 (700) fb depending on the assumed diphoton branching fraction of the Higgs boson. This is the first time that results on anomalous tHq production have been reported.
