Book excerpt: With the LHC proton-proton collision data at an energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector, this analysis searches for the production of a new particle W' with a yet-to-be-probed mass in the top quark plus bottom quark decay channel. The boosted and hadronically decaying top-quark is reconstructed as a large-radius jet and identified using jet substructures. A secondary-vertex finding algorithm identifies small-radius jets originating from a bottom quark. After the identification stage, the main background events come from the Quantum Chromodynamical production of multi-jet, which is estimated by a data-driven approach. The statistical data analysis searches for a resonant peak in the invariant mass distribution of the system with a jet associated with the top quark and another with the bottom quark. The consistency between data and the background prediction is found in the invariant mass range between 1 TeV to 7 TeV, and an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the production cross-section times branching ratio for a W' boson with right-handed chirality decaying to a top quark and a bottom quark. A lower limit on the W' mass is set at 4.4 TeV accordingly.

The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{{u2013}1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV. The hadronic decay products of the top quark with high Lorentz boost from the W' boson decay are detected as a single top flavoured jet. The use of jet substructure algorithms allows the top quark jet to be distinguished from standard model QCD background. Limits on the production cross section of a right-handed W' boson are obtained, together with constraints on the left-handed and right-handed couplings of the W' boson to quarks. The production of a right-handed W' boson with a mass below 2.02 TeV decaying to a hadronic final state is excluded at 95% confidence level. Furthermore, this mass limit increases to 2.15 TeV when both hadronic and leptonic decays are considered, and is the most stringent lower mass limit to date in the tb decay mode.

Masses of the hypothetical aT and ?T states of a benchmark Low Scale Technicolor model are excluded in the ranges [275,960] GeV and [200,700]?[750,890] GeV, respectively. Limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section of a singlet scalar resonance decaying to Z? final states have also been obtained for masses below 1180 GeV.

In the current study, the results of these searches are combined to provide a more stringent test of models predicting heavy resonances with couplings to vector bosons. Direct searches for a charged diboson resonance decaying to WZ in the l?l'l' (l=?,e), llqq¯,l?qq¯ and fully hadronic final states are combined and upper limits on the rate of production times branching ratio to the WZ bosons are compared with predictions of an extended gauge model with a heavy W' boson. Also, direct searches for a neutral diboson resonance decaying to WW and ZZ in the llqq¯, l?qq¯, and fully hadronic final states are combined and upper limits on the rate of production times branching ratio to the WW and ZZ bosons are compared with predictions for a heavy, spin-2 graviton in an extended Randall–Sundrum model where the Standard Model fields are allowed to propagate in the bulk of the extra dimension.

Various models of W'-boson production are studied by allowing for an arbitrary combination of left- and right-handed couplings. The analysis is based on the detection of events with a lepton (e, mu), jets, and missing transverse energy in the final state. No evidence for W'-boson production is found and 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction are obtained. For W' bosons with purely right-handed couplings, and for those with left-handed couplings assuming no interference effects, the observed 95% confidence level limit is M(W')> 2.05 TeV. For W' bosons with purely left-handed couplings, including interference effects, the observed 95% confidence level limit is M(W')> 1.84 TeV. The results presented in this paper are the most stringent limits published to date.

Three high-transverse-momentum electrons or muons are selected, with two of them required to be consistent with originating from a Z boson decay. The results are interpreted in the context of vector-like lepton and type-III seesaw models. For the vector-like lepton model, most heavy lepton mass values in the range 114-176 GeV are excluded. For the type-III seesaw model, most mass values in the range 100-468 GeV are excluded.

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the production cross section for ZW and ZZ boson pairs in final states with a pair of charged leptons, from the decay of a Z boson, and at least two jets, from the decay of a W or Z boson, using the full sample of proton-antiproton collisions recorded with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to 8.9 fb(̂-1) of integrated luminosity. We increase the sensitivity to vector boson decays into pairs of quarks using a neural network discriminant that exploits the differences between the spatial spread of energy depositions and charged-particle momenta contained within the jet of particles originating from quarks and gluons. Additionally, we employ new jet energy corrections to Monte Carlo simulations that account for differences in the observed energy scales for quark and gluon jets. The number of signal events is extracted through a simultaneous fit to the dijet mass spectrum in three classes of events: events likely to contain jets with a heavy-quark decay, events likely to contain jets originating from light quarks, and events that fail these identification criteria.
