Book Synopsis Human Impacts on Seals, Sea Lions, and Sea Otters by : Todd J. Braje

This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The bones recovered from the middens of the northeastern Pacific shorelines have important stories to tell biologists, marine mammalogists, and those concerned with marine conservation. This volume unearths a wealth of information about the historical ecology of seals, sea lions, and sea otters in the North Pacific that spans thousands of years. It provides fascinating insights into how the world once looked, and how it may one day look again as seals, sea lions, and sea otters reclaim and recolonize their former haunts.”—Andrew Trites, Director, Marine Mammal Research Unit, University of British Columbia “Braje and Rick have assembled a compelling set of case studies on the long-term and complex interactions between people, marine mammals, and environments in the Northeast Pacific. The promise of zooarchaeology as historical science is on full display, as researchers use geochemistry, aDNA, morphometrics, and traditional analytic methods to address questions of utmost importance to the long-term health of coastal ecosystems. If this book doesn't convince conservation biology about the need to take the long view of animal histories and ecosystems into account in developing conservation management plans, I'm not sure what will.”—Virginia L. Butler, Department of Anthropology, Portland State University

This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than ten thousand years, Native Americans from Alaska to southern California relied on aquatic animals such as seals, sea lions, and sea otters for food and raw materials. Archaeological research on the interactions between people and these marine mammals has made great advances recently and provides a unique lens for understanding the human and ecological past. Archaeological research is also emerging as a crucial source of information on contemporary environmental issues as we improve our understanding of the ancient abundance, ecology, and natural history of these species. This groundbreaking interdisciplinary volume brings together archaeologists, biologists, and other scientists to consider how archaeology can inform the conservation and management of pinnipeds and other marine mammals along the Pacific Coast.

This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seals, Sea-Lions, and Sea Otter of the Pacific Coast: Descriptions, Life History Notes, Photographs and Drawings The adult male is about 4 feet in length and weighs up to 85 pounds; the female 4 feet and 55 pounds; the newborn young 16 to 22 inches and 3 to 5 pounds. The dark brown fur of the sea otter is 1 to 1-1/ 2 inches long with scattered guard hairs. In the adult these hairs are often black' or silver. The face is light in color, and is flatter than that of any seal. Sea otters are gregarious, and a group of a hundred or more may remain together for a long time, resting or playing near some favorite kelp bed. When the weather is mild the animals spend most of their time in the water but during storms they take refuge among the rocks along the beach. The sea otter walks clumsily on land and early fur hunters took advantage of this fact to hunt them with clubs at favorite hauling-out places in stormy weather. The large, flat molar teeth of the sea otter are distinctive, differ ing greatly from the sharply pointed molars of seals and sea-lions. Many sea otters are exceptionally tractable and will take food from the hand within a few minutes after capture. Such animals seem almost oblivious to human presence. Vocal sounds vary from the harsh kitten-like mewing of the pup to the grunts, growls, and high pitched shrieks of the adults. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Captivating. . . . a full portrait of this adorable and ecologically important animal." —Publishers Weekly A science journalist travels the Pacific Coast in search of sea otters in this entertaining and inspiring book on the importance and history of this charismatic endangered species Sea otters—the adorable, furry marine mammals often seen floating on their backs holding hands—reveal the health of the coastal ecosystem along the Pacific Ocean. Once hunted for their prized fur in the 18th and 19th centuries, these animals nearly went extinct. Only now, nearly a century after hunting ceased, are populations showing stable growth in some places. Sea otters are a keystone species in coastal areas, feeding on sea urchins, clams, crab, and other crustaceans. When they are present, kelp beds are thick and healthy, providing homes for an array of sea life. When otters disappear, sea urchins take over, and the kelp disappears along with all the creatures that live in the beds. Now, thanks to their protected status, sea otters are making a comeback in California, Washington, and Alaska. In this hopeful book, science writer Todd McLeish embarks on an epic journey along the Pacific Coast—traveling from California to Alaska—to track the status, health, habits, personality, and viability of sea otters, and reveals how conservationists brought them back from the brink of extinction.
Download or read book Serendipity written by James A. Estes and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many of the findings in the book . . . are classics of ecology. . . . A rare and delightful insight into timely science."—Jane Lubchenco, Nature "Estes's refreshing narrative deftly weaves rigorous science with personal reflection to create an absorbing and introspective read that is equal parts memoir, ecological textbook, and motivational guidebook for young ecologists."—Science To newly minted biologist James Estes, the sea otters he was studying in the leafy kelp forests off the coast of Alaska appeared to have an unbalanced relationship with their greater environment. Gorging themselves on the sea urchins that grazed among the kelp, these small charismatic mammals seemed to give little back in return. But as Estes dug deeper, he unearthed a far more complex relationship between the otter and its underwater environment, discovering that otters play a critical role in driving positive ecosystem dynamics. While teasing out the connective threads, he began to question our assumptions about ecological relationships. These questions would ultimately inspire a lifelong quest to better understand the surprising complexity of our natural world and the unexpected ways we discover it. Serendipity tells the story of James Estes’s life as a naturalist and the concepts that have driven his interest in researching the ecological role of top-level predators. Using the relationships between sea otters, kelp, and sea urchins as a touchstone, Estes retraces his investigations of numerous other species, ecosystems, and ecological processes in an attempt to discover why ecologists can learn so many details about the systems in which they work and yet understand so little about the broader processes that influence these systems. Part memoir, part natural history, and deeply inquisitive, Serendipity will entertain and inform readers as it raises thoughtful questions about our relationship with the natural world.
