Book excerpt: The power of microwave remote sensing for studying the oceans of the world was demonstrated conclusively by the SEASAT mission in 1978. Since then, no further satellite-flown instruments have been available to provide further data of this type. However, the proposed launch of ESA's ERS-1 satellite will lead to a new set of active microwave instruments being flown in space in 1990. Even though similar data has been obtained from aircraft-flown instruments SAR, scatterometers, altimeters etc. - a great deal of activity has been taking place to develop the necessary expertise in handling and analysing such data when it comes on-stream from ERS-1 and from subsequent satellites. It was against this background that the scientific Affairs Division of NATO again agreed to sponsor an ASI in Dundee in 1988. Its purpose was to review existing knowledge of the extraction of marine and atmospheric geophysical parameters from satellite-gathered microwave data and to enable scientists to prepare themselves and their computing systems to utilise the new data when it becomes available. The importance of the data is largely as input parameters to assist in the fitting of boundary conditions in large computer models. The course was concerned more with the non-imaging instruments, that is with passive radiometers, altimeters and scatterometers, than with the (imaging) synthetic aperture radar.

Book excerpt: This is an interim report on an ongoing program to develop a passive microwave system for the remote all-weather measurement of sea surface temperature from a satellite platform. It presents a general method for obtaining optimal linear algorithms for the reduction of multifrequency radiometer data to determine marine environmental variables. The mean square errors in determining the environmental variables are also determined thereby enabling the evaluation of different passive microwave radiometric systems. This method, called the 'Environmental Transfer Function', includes in its analysis the error contributions from three sources: errors in measuring microwave brightness temperature, the statistical variances of the environmental parameters, and uncertainties in the equations used to relate the brightness temperatures to the environmental parameters. The mathematical formulation is first developed and then an example application is given to evaluate the remote sensing capability of selected radiometric systems. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Oceans Igor V. Cherny and Victor Yu. Raizer In Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Oceans, the detailed results of more than 20 years of experimental and theoretical investigations in the field of ocean remote sensing, utilising microwave radiometric techniques and multi-frequency aerospace instruments, are presented. Experimental results presented in this book to some extent contradict the traditional view that microwave radiometry and, in particular, millimetre-wave frequencies are not useful for remote sensing of oceans. The authors show that studies of the ocean and atmosphere as a coupled system, and of processes occurring at the ocean surface and in deep water, can be reliably evolved using compact passive radiometric sensors. They further demonstrate that for studies of global, large-scale and local processes in the ocean-atmosphere system, only the combination of microwave and optical techniques will reveal the spatial structure and dynamics of the ocean surface at scales from centimetres to several hundred metres. The text first introduces ocean surface phenomena, discussing the ocean-atmosphere interface, the classification of surface waves, the generation and statistics of wind waves, and wave-breaking and foaming processes. The microwave emission characteristics of the ocean surface are then described, and the influence of wind waves, bubble-foam-spray coverage, oil spills and sea ice are discussed. The instruments and methods used for passive microwave remote sensing of the oceans from both aircraft and from satellites are reviewed. Microwave observations of processes in the ocean-atmosphere system are then described in detail, incorporating a new approach for microwave diagnostics of deep-ocean processes. Examples presented include the Rossby soliton, frontal zone in the Kurosio region, influence of brief showers on the subsurface layer, and interaction of tropical cyclones with the ocean during their origin and subsequent trajectories over the ocean surface. Readership: Undergraduate and postgraduate students studying remote sensing, marine science, oceanography, geography, geophysics, meteorology, climatology, atmospheric physics and environmental science. Professional oceanographers and those interested in oceanographic remote sensing processes and their applications, marine scientists and engineers, environmental scientists, and those studying the ocean-atmosphere system.

Book excerpt: This is an interim report on an ongoing program to develop a passive microwave system for the remote all-weather measurement of sea surface temperature from a satellite platform. It presents the results of a theoretical investigation of the interdependence of the relevant environmental and instrumental parameters and their effect on the measured microwave brightness temperature and the sea surface temperature derived from it. The parameters considered are sea surface temperature, sea salinity, ocean roughness (wind speed), atmospheric water vapor, clouds, and the observational frequency. Detailed descriptions of the calculations of the emission and reflection of the sea surface, the emission and absorption of the atmosphere, the translation and rotation of the antenna properties from the satellite-oriented coordinate system to an earth-oriented system, and the convolution of the antenna reception pattern with the total radiatio over the earth's surface are given. Calculations of the microwave brightness temperature and of the uncertainty of the sea surface temperature derived from it for a range of values and uncertainties of the environmental conditions are presented. These calculations indicate that the optimum observational frequency for the determination of sea surface temperature lies between about 3 and 6 GHz. The dominant source of error is due to uncertainty in the effects of ocean roughness. A multifrequency microwave system will be required to correct for the effects of the various environmental factors and to obtain the sea surface temperature to an uncertainty of less than 1 deg C.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow accumulation on the ground changes the energy balance between the land and the atmosphere, and stores winter precipitation for water supplies in many parts of the world. In practice, the snow water equivalent (SWE), defined as the equivalent depth of liquid water when snow completely melts, is difficult to map in cold regions except via remote sensing techniques. The microwave remote sensing (MWRS) has been used for SWE estimation since the 1980s based on the interactions of microwave radiation with snow crystals. In this study, physically based radiative transfer (RT) models and the Bayesian-based Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach were applied to develop a high-accuracy SWE retrieval algorithm. The models and the algorithms were tested using ground-based snowpit and microwave measurements. Two widely-used snow RT models were fully-compared in the aspects of snow micro-structure assumptions, volume scattering theories and the RT equation resolution. The Microwave Emission Model of Layered Snowpacks (MEMLS) based on the Improved Born Approximation (IBA) was shown to be an adequate observation model to estimate SWE using the multi-frequency brightness temperature (TB) at 10.65 to 90 GHz. The prior information is from a set of globally-available datasets, and the performance is tested for local prior information derived from historical ground measurements. The retrieval algorithm was later adapted for active microwave SWE retrieval using the backscattering coefficient at 10.2 to 16.7 GHz. Results showed that MEMLS-IBA can simulate the measured microwave signals with a 10-K accuracy for TB and a 1-dB accuracy for the backscattering coefficient. The passive microwave retrieval algorithm achieved an accuracy of 30-mm for shallow snow, with two-layer snow properties estimated. However, the active microwave retrieval algorithm reproduced similar accuracy only in the synthetic experiment using 1-layer snow property estimates. Future improvement requires a better active microwave observation model.

Book excerpt: Atmospheric correction algorithms for Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) single channel infrared (IR) estimation of sea surface temperature (SST) have been derived based on Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) water vapor (WV) content retrievals. It is demonstrated that the OLS single IR channel atmospheric correction can be correlated to WV and that the SSM/-derived correction algorithms provide significant improvement over uncorrected single IR channel SST estimation. Best results are obtained from a correction algorithm that incorporates a quadratic WV term. Use of the quadratic SSM/1-derived WV correction on properly cloud screened OLS IR data produces SST retrievals accurate to within 1.0-C RMS when compared to moored buoy in situ SST measurements ... Book excerpt: Remote Sensing is collecting and interpreting information on targets without being in physical contact with the objects. Aircraft, satellites ...etc are the major platforms for remote sensing observations. Unlike electrical, magnetic and gravity surveys that measure force fields, remote sensing technology is commonly referred to methods that employ electromagnetic energy as radio waves, light and heat as the means of detecting and measuring target characteristics. Geoscience is a study of nature world from the core of the earth, to the depths of oceans and to the outer space. This branch of study can help mitigate volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides ... etc terrible human life disaster and help develop ground water, mineral ores, fossil fuels and construction materials. Also, it studies physical, chemical reactions to understand the distribution of the nature resources. Therefore, the geoscience encompass earth, atmospheric, oceanography, pedology, petrology, mineralogy, hydrology and geology. This book covers latest and futuristic developments in remote sensing novel theory and applications by numerous scholars, researchers and experts. It is organized into 26 excellent chapters which include optical and infrared modeling, microwave scattering propagation, forests and vegetation, soils, ocean temperature, geographic information , object classification, data mining, image processing, passive optical sensor, multispectral and hyperspectral sensing, lidar, radiometer instruments, calibration, active microwave and SAR processing. Last but not the least, this book presented chapters that highlight frontier works in remote sensing information processing. I am very pleased to have leaders in the field to prepare and contribute their most current research and development work. Although no attempt is made to cover every topic in remote sensing and geoscience, these entire 26 remote sensing technology chapters shall give readers a good insight. All topics listed are equal important and significant.
