Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets forth the physical, mathematical, and numerical foundations of computer models used to understand and predict the global ocean climate system. Aimed at students and researchers of ocean and climate science who seek to understand the physical content of ocean model equations and numerical methods for their solution, it is largely general in formulation and employs modern mathematical techniques. It also highlights certain areas of cutting-edge research. Stephen Griffies presents material that spans a broad spectrum of issues critical for modern ocean climate models. Topics are organized into parts consisting of related chapters, with each part largely self-contained. Early chapters focus on the basic equations arising from classical mechanics and thermodynamics used to rationalize ocean fluid dynamics. These equations are then cast into a form appropriate for numerical models of finite grid resolution. Basic discretization methods are described for commonly used classes of ocean climate models. The book proceeds to focus on the parameterization of phenomena occurring at scales unresolved by the ocean model, which represents a large part of modern oceanographic research. The final part provides a tutorial on the tensor methods that are used throughout the book, in a general and elegant fashion, to formulate the equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth. Over the next 100 years, climate change is expected to accelerate, contributing to major physical, ecological, social, and economic changes, many of which have already begun. Changes in arctic climate will also affect the rest of the world through increased global warming and rising sea levels. The volume addresses the following major topics: - Research results in observing aspects of the Arctic climate system and its processes across a range of time and space scales - Representation of cryospheric, atmospheric, and oceanic processes in models, including simulation of their interaction with coupled models - Our understanding of the role of the Arctic in the global climate system, its response to large-scale climate variations, and the processes involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environment and Development is a component of Encyclopedia of Development and Economic Sciences in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The pressing need to combine protecting the environment with sustaining development has become increasingly recognized. This theme deals with environmental and ecological sustainable development. Environmental damage has not only created obstacles to sustainable economic development, but is also posing great threats, to human health and life, to ecological systems and the natural world, and to the socio-cultural environments in which human beings lead their daily lives. The content of the theme on Environment and Development is organized with state-of-the-art presentations covering the following aspects of the subject: Approaching Sustainable Development from Different Angles; Hazard and Risk Assessment, and Risk Management; Current Views of Global Carrying Capacity; Social and Economic Disparities; Responses to the Challenges of Disparities and Unsustainable Use of Natural Resources; Environmental Economics and Ecobusiness; Environmental Values and Ethics; Other Important Future Environmental Issues. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.

Whereas atmospheric modeling was once the domain ofa few research units at universities or government laboratories, it can now be performed almost anywhere thanks to the affordability of computing power. Atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) are being used by a rapidly growing scientific community in a wide range of applications. With widespread interest in anthropogenic climate change, GCMs have a role also in informing policy discussions. Many of the scientists using GCMs have backgrounds in fields other than atmospheric sciences and may be unaware of how GCMs are constructed. Recognizing this explosion in the application of GCMs, we organized a two week course in order to give young scientists who are relatively new to the field of atmospheric modeling a thorough grounding in the basic principles on which GCMs are constructed, an insight into their strengths and weaknesses, and guid ance on how meaningful numerical experiments are formulated and analyzed. Sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and other institu tions, this Advanced Study Institute (ASI) took place May 25-June 5, 1998, at II Ciocco, a remote hotel on a Tuscan hillside in Italy.

Book excerpt: Water is the most effective agent in the climate system to modulate energy transfer by radiative processes, through its exchanges of latent heat and within cascades of chemical processes. It is the source of all life on earth, and once convective clouds are formed, it enables large vertical transports of momentum, heat and various atmospheric constituents up to levels above the tropical tropopause. Water triggers very complex processes at the earth's continental surfaces and within the oceans. At last, water in its gaseous phase is the most important greenhouse-gas! Numerical modelling and measurements of the state of the present climate system needs a very thorough understanding of all these processes and their various interactions and forcings. This is a prerequisite for more substantial forecasts of future states in all scales of time, from days to centuries. Therefore, the management of the World Climate Research Programme established in 1988 the new programme GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment). GEWEX is specifically defined to determine the energy and water transports in the fast components of the climate system with the presently available modelling and measurement means and to provide new capabilities for the future. Research in GEWEX must further develop methods to determine the influence of climatic anomalies on available water resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the first series of conventional triaxial tests carried out on columnar first year sea ice samples obtained from the field and tested under controlled laboratory conditions using a large-capacity test machine. A total of 110 horizontal ice samples from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, were tested on a closed-loop electro-hydraulic test machine at -10 C in unconfined and confined constant-strain-rate compression. The confined tests were conducted in a conventional triaxial cell that maintained a constant ratio between the radial and axial stress to simulate in situ loading conditions. The load ratios used were 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75. The strain rate of each test was constant at 0.01, 0.001, or 0.00001/s. Data are presented on the strength, failure strain and initial tangent modulus of the first year sea ice under these loading conditions. The effects of confining pressure, strain rate and ice structure on the mechanical properties of the ice are examined.
