Book Synopsis Arctic Ice Shelves and Ice Islands by : Luke Copland
Download or read book Arctic Ice Shelves and Ice Islands written by Luke Copland and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the current state of knowledge of Arctic ice shelves, ice islands and related features. Ice shelves are permanent areas of ice which float on the ocean surface while attached to the coast, and typically occur in very cold environments where perennial sea ice builds up to great thickness, and/or where glaciers flow off the land and are preserved on the ocean surface. These landscape features are relatively poorly studied in the Arctic, yet they are potentially highly sensitive indicators of climate change because they respond to changes in atmospheric, oceanic and glaciological conditions. Recent fracturing and breakup events of ice shelves in the Canadian High Arctic have attracted significant scientific and public attention, and produced large ice islands which may pose a risk to Arctic shipping and offshore infrastructure. Much has been published about Antarctic ice shelves, but to date there has not been a dedicated book about Arctic ice shelves or ice islands. This book fills that gap.

Book Synopsis The Global Cryosphere by : Roger G. Barry
Download or read book The Global Cryosphere written by Roger G. Barry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies indicate that - due to climate change - the Earth is undergoing rapid changes in all cryospheric components, including polar sea ice shrinkage, mountain glacier recession, thawing permafrost, and diminishing snow cover. This book provides a comprehensive summary of all components of the Earth's cryosphere, reviewing their history, physical and chemical characteristics, geographical distributions, and projected future states. This new edition has been completely updated throughout, and provides state-of-the-art data from GlobSnow-2 CRYOSAT, ICESAT, and GRACE. It includes a comprehensive summary of cryospheric changes in land ice, permafrost, freshwater ice, sea ice, and ice sheets. It discusses the models developed to understand cryosphere processes and predict future changes, including those based on remote sensing, field campaigns, and long-term ground observations. Boasting an extensive bibliography, over 120 figures, and end-of-chapter review questions, it is an ideal resource for students and researchers of the cryosphere.
Book Synopsis Ice Thickness Observations, North American Arctic and Subarctic, 1967-68, 1968-69 by : Michael A. Bilello

This book was released on 1972 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sixth in a series of reports on lake and river ice and land-fast sea ice records ice thicknesses observed throughout the North American arctic and subarctic during the 1968-69 and 1969-70 seasons. Information on ice surface conditions, dates of first ice, freeze-over and breakup, and measurements of ice thickness made on the second voyage of the S.S. Manhattan are also included. Continued reports from the Alaska National Guard Network on ice thickness measurements on lakes and rivers in the remote regions of interior Alaska are presented. Analyses are made of maximum observed ice thicknesses reported during the two winters in North America, including data from additional stations in western Alaska. (Author).
