Long before Suzanne Collins created Katniss Everdeen and Octavia Butler wrote Parable of the Sower, there were many traditional folktales full of adventure, intrigue, and intrepid female characters. Feminist Folktales from Around the World collects these forgotten classics and presents them with original artwork by designer and illustrator Suki Boynton. Volume three in the series, Sea Girl features an introduction by Daniel Jose Older, the New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Lost Saints. In legends from China, Finland, India, Canada, and more, brave heroines encounter monstrous rivers and ogres' nests while outsmarting desperate sharks and hungry tigers. They courageously save families and villages—and, most importantly, they always choose their own fate.

'Clever, creative, and exquisitely written' Stephanie Garber For generations, deadly storms have ravaged Mina's homeland. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curse them with death and despair. To appease him, each year a maiden is thrown into the sea, in the hopes that one day the 'true bride' will be chosen and end the suffering. Many believe Shim Cheong - Mina's brother's beloved - to be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is sacrificed, Mina's brother follows her, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong's stead. Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina finds the Sea God, trapped in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man and a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits, Mina sets out to wake him and bring an end to the storms once and for all. But she doesn't have much time: a human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking . . . The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is a magical feminist retelling of a classic Korean legend, perfect for fans of Uprooted and Miyazaki's Spirited Away. 'A beautiful, mesmerizing retelling' Elizabeth Lim, New York Times bestselling author of Six Crimson Cranes 'A true jewel of a story' Janella Angeles, bestselling author of Where Dreams Descend

Book excerpt: "In seeking to explore the interrelationships between, and mutual influence of, varieties of sexual stereotypes and religious views of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, Women in Buddhism succeeds in drawing our attention to matters of philosophical importance. Paul examines the 'image' of women which arise in a number of Buddhist texts associated with Mahayana and finds that, while ideally the tradition purports to be egalitarian, in actual practice it often betrayed a strong misogynist prejudice. Sanskrit and Chinese texts are organized by theme and type, progressing from those which treat the traditionally orthodox and negative to those which set forth a positive consideration of soteriological paths for women. . . . In Women in Buddhism, Diana Paul may be forcing our consideration of the problem of female enlightenment. Thus the main purport and accomplishment of her scholarship is revolutionary."—Philosophy East and West

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Tell Us Our Names' is a timely book, beautifully written and understandable by all. Its particular challenge lies in the folk and fairy tales that provide the text. Here are the roots of both faith and reason -- and the direct way to dump excess baggage and discover new and better questions. Scripture, Oriental wisdom, ecumenical theology: all receive calm and imaginative treatment in Song's hands."" --Joseph McLelland, McGill University, Montreal In this volume Dr. Song offers us 'golden keys to open the stonegates of religion.' Gathering together intercultural insights from the experience of people in many countries, these parables and stories usher us into the presence of Mystery. The easy flow of storytelling, smoothly mixed with sensitive interpretation, makes this volume very readable. To those who believe that theology has to do only with ideas and concepts, this volume may come as a surprise and a joyful discovery."" --S. J. Samartha, former Director, Dialogue Programme, World Council of Churches, Geneva C. S. Song explores the folk tales of the world and depicts God's answer to the thrust for the redemption of the people with 'one stroke of an Asian brush.' Here, the culture, religion, history, and suffering of the Asian people is the medium of God's redemptive revelation. Certainly, by this work he has contributed another 'transposition' of the biblical message to Asia, a monumental accomplishment in the formation of Asian theology. Reading this Theology of Folk Tales is exciting and illuminative."" --Nam-Dong Suh, Director, Institute for Mission Education, Seoul, Korea C. S. Song is Professor of Theology and Asian Cultures at Pacific School of Religion. His recent publications include 'The Believing Heart'.

Book excerpt: "Although the influence of the Brothers Grimm on folklore in virtually every country in the West has been widely studied, a similar development in the early part of twentieth-century China is virtually unknown. This book collects and translates more than 40 tales selected from the "Lin Lan" series, published in China from the late 1920s to the early 1930s. The pseudonym "Lin Lan" was created in 1924, when a group of three literary stories about the legendary Xu Wenchang (1521-1593), himself the author of many literary works still popular today, were published in a morning newspaper. The success of this first attempt encouraged the creators to publish more folk tales and fairy tales, which ultimately played a major role in the development of modern folk literature in China. The series, written and developed by a Shanghai publisher under the pen name Lin Lan, was divided into three subgenres-minjian chuanshuo (folk legends/tales), minjian tonghua (folk fairy tales), and minjian qushi (comic folk tales)-published in 43 volumes containing nearly one thousand tales in all. The tales were collected the tales from oral storytellers throughout China in response to a call from the publisher, and combined elements of European fairy-tale literature with traditional Chinese narratives"--

Book excerpt: Out of the East came wonderful tales by a Westerner who loved the old Japan--devotion, ancestor worship, courtesy, and kindness--and record his feelings for the rest of the world to read. This collection of "reveries and studies," as author and legendary Japanologist Lafcadio Hearn subtitled Out of the East, contains unforgettable tales like "The Red Bridal," in which the conflict between duty and human feelings leads to tragedy in classically Japanese style; moving personal memoirs like "with Kyushu Students," Hearn's account of his experiences teaching at Kumamoto Higher Middle School; and marvelous evocations of atmosphere like "The Dream of Summer Day." In works like these Hearn perceived and captured the essence of Japan as it was in the days when he fell under its spell and made Japan his adopted country. It is small wonder that Hearn's writing continues to live, for his very soul is in his writing--and the soul of Japan well.
