Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sculpting cloud shadows or any shadow is not possible. Shadows can be manipulated and changed somewhat by the texture they fall on, be it flat and smooth or jagged, sharp and hilly. Clouds are somewhat like people, like the world. They have shape and form but are constantly changing. You can’t rely on them to be there when needed; and sometime they just show up at the wrong time. They are real but like a ghost can dissipate and disappear. Clouds are like life itself; you can’t hold onto it, only chase it’s shadow. Poem excerpts- You can’t eat it, taste it, smell it or hear it. You can’t store it on a shelf to use it later. Good vision will help but sometime a blind man can see it. You can’t buy it, bank it, sell it or rent it, it is free. It’s worth is un-measurable, without it there is no you or me. Behind the calendar and behind the clock, one step ahead of the dawn, behind your back, time frolics on. I can’t live in the past. I can’t dwell in a place that dissipated like the morning mist. Yet I must carry the past with me, like a heavy anchor holding me back.

Book excerpt: When Brady Blankenship loses his wife in a tragic accident, he is left with a newborn son. Brady's grief takes him to a family cabin, Cloud Shadow, secluded in the mountains of New Mexico, where he rages against the sorrow that engulfs him while struggling to learn the necessities of fatherhood. Warming bottles, changing diapers, giving baths—these small tasks are the only activities pushing him forward, providing purpose in his grief-driven life. But his quiet retreat is soon interrupted when a woman named Hannah Ortiz hurts her ankle on Brady's mountain and stumbles into his life. Now Brady must make room for her as she nurses her sprained ankle—and her broken past. Brady cannot comprehend the fear that lurks in her eyes, but during a mountain storm, Hannah reveals her scars. Some were created with a hateful knife, scoring Hannah with permanent reminders, but the deepest scars, those that make her cower in fear at the sound of thunder, are invisible to the eye. Ten years after this tragic attack, Hannah is still running from her fear, a fear that turns out to be all too real. Caught between grieving his wife's death and learning to heal through an unexpected friend, Brady discovers there is no timetable for loss or for love. His friendship with Hannah blooms quickly—too quickly for Brady's conscience—at Cloud Shadow and neither can decide if his wife's recent death will bring them together or ultimately leave them both haunted by their own terrifying pasts.

Book excerpt: David Yorke retired from an English espionage unit that nobody, except its members, ever knew existed. He was recruited and trained to kill, he became the best there was. This is his story as told to a professional writer. It records the devastating personal damage inflicted on Yorke by his job. He was brought out of retirement and given the option of being loaned to an American government security division. He accepted because he felt this final assignment could provide the justification for his life. He came to possess the antiviral to a newly developed virulent smallpox virus against which there was no known antidote; existing supplies of the traditional antiviral would be ineffective. The antiviral would be the only defense against a secret distribution method of the smallpox virus that could devastate the American Continent. Time was of the essence. The writer woke up: why was the old guy telling him all this so it was recorded? What he had disclosed was potentially more devastating than the 9/11 event, and he wasn't over yet. There was one more chapter to come. The final chapter takes place in Central Park in New York City in early 2002.

Book excerpt: Essential reading for anyone interested in art, community, and the built environment "An around-the-world glimpse into how artists reimagine the places, spaces, landscapes, streets, and skies we share."--Nina MacLaughlin, Boston Globe A towering abstract steel sculpture in the middle of a traffic island in Spoleto, Italy. Soaring vertical gardens enhanced with digital technology in Singapore's Marina Bay. A skateboard bowl that doubles as a community pool in San Juan, Puerto Rico. These are just a few of the contemporary public artworks defining cities around the globe that are featured in The World Atlas of Public Art. The book charts a global survey of works and practices from the past six decades featuring more than 125 significant permanent and temporary public artworks by leading contemporary artists, including Ruth Asawa, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Olafur Eliasson, Yayoi Kusama, Simone Leigh, and OSGEMEOS. Readers encounter works in chapters on six public locations: grounds, walls, structures, waters, routes, and skies. Organized geographically within these chapters, the book reveals not only where to find these artworks but also how they generate meaning from their location. Between the chapters are essays on the themes of public bodies, gatherings, platforms, services, and debates. Enlivened with more than 300 energetic and eye-catching images, this book is an exploration of how art transforms public spaces, promotes social interaction, fosters community, and provokes impassioned responses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The eye that gathers impressions is no longer the eye that sees a depiction on a surface; it becomes a hand, the ray of light becomes a finger, and the imagination becomes a form of immediate touching."—Johann Gottfried Herder Long recognized as one of the most important eighteenth-century works on aesthetics and the visual arts, Johann Gottfried Herder's Plastik (Sculpture, 1778) has never before appeared in a complete English translation. In this landmark essay, Herder combines rationalist and empiricist thought with a wide range of sources—from the classics to Norse legend, Shakespeare to the Bible—to illuminate the ways we experience sculpture. Standing on the fault line between classicism and romanticism, Herder draws most of his examples from classical sculpture, while nevertheless insisting on the historicity of art and of the senses themselves. Through a detailed analysis of the differences between painting and sculpture, he develops a powerful critique of the dominance of vision both in the appreciation of art and in our everyday apprehension of the world around us. One of the key articulations of the aesthetics of Sturm und Drang, Sculpture is also important as an anticipation of subsequent developments in art theory. Jason Gaiger's translation of Sculpture includes an extensive introduction to Herder's thought, explanatory notes, and illustrations of all the sculptures discussed in the text.

Book excerpt: In this fascinating study of Northwest Coast art, Jonathan Meuli has not only outlined a history of ideas associated with Northwest Coast art objects from pre-Contact time to the present day, but has also examined the ways in which the physical location and contexts in which the objects are produced has helped to determine their meanings. Locating his linear historical narrative within a wider exploration of ethnographic art ideas, which emphasizes links across cultures, Meuli examines the differing attitudes towards Northwest Coast material culture, particularly as these are embodied in oral mythic narratives, collection methods and architectural constructions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-seven poems in this collection were written over a period of many years. They vary greatly in style and length. The poems in the first two sections are lyrical. Natural beauty evokes wonder and tugs at memory. Creatures dance and sing. There is joy. The last poem in Part II, "The Generations," shifts tone abruptly. There is conflict and loss. In the end, with the dolphins, beauty renews hope. "The Generations" is a bridge to the complex narrative poems and dramatic lyrics in Part III. Here the tragic is displayed, but also the divine power that redeems it. Part IV plunges into our modern abyss. The poems are an anguished cry from the heart of the fog enveloping our civilization. The long poem, "The Fog," evokes the plight of lost and lonely individuals tending their private campfires in the night of the world, cut off from transcendence and marooned in the abstract unreality of the digital universe. Part V carries forward this momentum, referencing the genocidal violence of our age, but then moves from darkness and horror up into the light of revelation and peace.
