Book Synopsis The Cultures of Italian Migration by : Graziella Parati
Download or read book The Cultures of Italian Migration written by Graziella Parati and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-07-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cultures of Italian Migration allows the adjective "Italian" to qualify people's movements along diverse trajectories and temporal dimensions. Discussions on migrations to and from Italy meet in that discursive space where critical concepts like"home," "identity," "subjectivity," and "otherness" eschew stereotyping. This volume demonstrates that interpretations of old migrations are necessary in order to talk about contemporary Italy. New migrations trace new non linear paths in the definitionof a multicultural Italy whose roots are unmistakably present throughout the centuries. Some of these essays concentrate on topics that are historically long-term, such as emigration from Italy to the Americas and southern Pacific Ocean. Others focus on the more contemporary phenomena of immigration to Italy from other parts of the world, including Africa. This collection ultimately offers an invitation to seek out new and different modes of analyzing the migratory act.

Download or read book The Italian Mind written by Marco Sgarbi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the twelfth to the seventeenth century, Aristotle’s writings lay at the foundation of Western culture, providing a body of knowledge and a set of analytical tools applicable to all areas of human investigation. Scholars of the Renaissance have emphasized the remarkable longevity and versatility of Aristotelianism, but they have mainly focused on the Latin tradition. Scarce, if any, attention has gone to vernacular works. Nonetheless, several important Renaissance figures wished to make Aristotle’s works accessible and available outside the narrow circle of professional philosophers and university professors to a broad set of readers. The thesis underpinning this book is that Italian vernacular Aristotelianism, especially in the field of logic, made fundamental contributions to the thought of the period, anticipating many of the features of early modern philosophy and contributing to a new conception of knowledge.

Book Synopsis Anonymity in Eighteenth-Century Italian Publishing by : Lodovica Braida
Download or read book Anonymity in Eighteenth-Century Italian Publishing written by Lodovica Braida and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the different forms in which authorship came to be expressed in eighteenth-century Italian publishing. It analyses both the affirmation of the “author function”, and, above all, its paradoxical opposite: the use of anonymity, a centuries-old practice present everywhere in Europe but often neglected by scholarship. The reasons why authors chose to publish their works anonymously were manifold, including prudence, fear of censorship, modesty, fear of personal criticism, or simple divertissement. In many cases, it was an ethical choice, especially for ecclesiastics. The Italian case provides a key perspective on the study of anonymity in the European context, contributing to the analysis of an overlooked topic in academic studies.
Book Synopsis Italian Literature by : Gloria Allaire
Download or read book Italian Literature written by Gloria Allaire and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first critical edition with facing-page English translation of the fourteenth-century Il Tristano Riccardiano, MS 1729. The French prose Roman de Tristan circulated widely in medieval Italy, attested numerous translations and adaptations in different dialects, two of which are preserved in Florence's Biblioteca Riccardiana and reveal important links amongst the extant Italian Tristans. The longer version, Tristano Riccardiano, MS 2543, has been edited, re-edited and translated into English. However, its shorter sister, found in the fourteenth-century MS Ricc. 1729, has suffered almost complete critical neglect, perhaps due to its amateur production traits, complex amalgam of regional dialects and idiosyncratic script. While its contents (Tristan's birth, early adventures, love affair with Yseut) largely correspond to MS 2543, there are noteworthy variants. For example, the famous three-day tournament, conserved in the Tristano Panciatichiano and constituting the bulk of the Tristano Corsiniano, does not appear. MS 1729 also preserves the final episodes (Tristan's fatal wounding, the lovers' deaths, lamentation at Camelot), which are not found in MS 2543. This volume offers the first critical edition of this Italian exemplar, permitting further linguistic analysis; it is accompanied by a facing-page English translation, opening the text to a wider audience. The full introduction considers the manuscript itself, looking at such matters as its dating, illustrations, watermarks and contents, and comparing it with other redactions, whilst notes, a bibliography and index of proper names complete the apparatus.
