Book Synopsis The Compleat Busoni, Volume 1 by : Larry Sitsky
Download or read book The Compleat Busoni, Volume 1 written by Larry Sitsky and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Sitsky, professor emeritus at The Australian National University, is an internationally known composer, pianist, scholar, and teacher. His books are fundamental reference works on subjects such as Australian piano music, the 20th-century avant-garde, the piano music of Anton Rubinstein, the early 20th-century Russian avant-garde, and the classical reproducing piano roll. The Compleat Busoni is the result of Sitsky’s lifelong focus on the composer Ferruccio Busoni. Over three volumes, Sitsky surveys Busoni’s vast output, provides an ending to the unfinished opera Dr. Faust, and presents definitive realisations of the Fantasia Contrappuntistica in two-piano and orchestral versions. New insights into Busoni’s style and aesthetics are an integral aspect of this work.
Book Synopsis Ferruccio Busoni and the Ontology of the Musical Work by : Erinn Elizabeth Knyt
Download or read book Ferruccio Busoni and the Ontology of the Musical Work written by Erinn Elizabeth Knyt and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2010 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferruccio Busoni's conception of the musical work derives from his multiple roles as performer, aesthetician, editor, composer, arranger, and intellectual. Drawing on unpublished scores, manuscripts, sketches and documents from the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, concert programs from a private collection in Berkeley, acoustic recordings, information about Busoni's intellectual interests gleaned from an auction catalogue featuring the contents of his extensive library, and the published aesthetic writings, letters, and compositions, the present study offers the first comprehensive account of Busoni's work concept. By establishing connections between his ideas and his musical practice, it explores and clarifies the reasoning behind his idiosyncratic compositional style, a style characterized by a blurring of boundaries between original and borrowed material. Polystylistic mixtures of the old and new and a distinctive performance style, in which Busoni creatively altered and embellished existing texts, exemplify his practice in an age in thrall to Werktreue, when originality of idea was prized above all else.
Book Synopsis Luigi Dallapiccola and Musical Modernism in Fascist Italy by : Ben Earle
Download or read book Luigi Dallapiccola and Musical Modernism in Fascist Italy written by Ben Earle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luigi Dallapiccola is widely considered a defining figure in twentieth-century Italian musical modernism, whose compositions bear passionate witness to the historical period through which he lived. In this book, Ben Earle focuses on three major works by the composer: the one-act operas Volo di notte ('Night Flight') and Il prigioniero ('The Prisoner'), and the choral Canti di prigionia ('Songs of Imprisonment'), setting them in the context of contemporary politics to trace their complex path from fascism to resistance. Earle also considers the wider relationship between musical modernism and Italian fascism, exploring the origins of musical modernism and investigating its place in the institutional structures created by Mussolini's regime. In doing so, he sheds new light on Dallapiccola's work and on the cultural politics of the early twentieth century to provide a history of musical modernism in Italy from the fin de siècle to the early Cold War.
Book Synopsis Teoria del sogno e dramma musicale. La metafisica della musica di Schopenhauer by : Giovanni Piana
Download or read book Teoria del sogno e dramma musicale. La metafisica della musica di Schopenhauer written by Giovanni Piana and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-01-02 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Luigi Russolo, Futurist by : Luciano Chessa
Download or read book Luigi Russolo, Futurist written by Luciano Chessa and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-03-31 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Luigi Russolo is increasingly being recognized as an important figure in 20th century art and music, and his work deserves to be better understood. Chessa’s archival research and readings of esoteric or otherwise little-known texts are impressive, and he offers a convincing account of the influence of the occult on Russolo and the Futurists in general. This book alters our conception of Russolo, Futurism, and the early artistic avant-garde.”—Christoph Cox, Hampshire College “This book is timely, and merits the attention of a wider audience. Luigi Russolo, futurista makes a compelling argument that radically revises our views on a major creative figure of the twentieth century. Luciano Chessa provides vast amounts of information on the ideas and trends that influenced the Futurists, and offers a wealth of insight and observations that point the way for further research on avant-garde music and art in the twentieth century.”—Paul DeMarinis, Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University

Book excerpt: One of the greatest of the pianists after the time of Liszt, Ferruccio Busoni was a turn-of-the-century composer whose music has recently begun to be taken very seriously in academic circles and among contemporary performers. This work is the first volume to offer a comprehensive, annotated bibliography covering a wide range of published and unpublished materials, including Busoni's librettos and his perceptive essays on the future of music. It also provides a brief biography and detailed listings of Busoni's compositions, together with an extensive discography. Book excerpt: This collection of essays from a diverse group of scholars represents a multidisciplinary redeployment of the Aeneid that aims to illuminate its importance to our present moment. It provides a rigorous and multifaceted answer to the question, "Why should we still think about the Aeneid?" The book contains chapters detailing previously undocumented modern literary receptions of Vergil’s epic, addressing the Aeneid’s relevance to understanding modern political discourse, explaining how the Aeneid assists in making sense of the pressing current issues of trauma and damage to one’s sense of identity, and even looking at how the epic can shape our future. The chapters build upon and extend beyond reception studies to provide the most current and complete answer to the question of the epic’s current relevance. The primary audiences for this collection are undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional academics from all disciplines. This collection should be of interest to readers whose academic interests include textual and cultural studies, classics, comparative literature, pedagogy, medical humanities, veterans studies, trauma studies, immigration studies, young adult fiction, world literature, communication and political discourse, citizenship studies, and ethnic studies.
