Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solo Vocal Works on Jewish Themes: A Bibliography of Jewish Composers is a comprehensive and annotated compendium of stage, concert, and liturgical compositions written by Jewish composers from every known time period and country. Kenneth Jaffe has amassed nearly 3,000 large-scale musical works for solo voice(s) on Jewish themes, written by Jewish composers. The works include over 400 cantatas, 150 oratorios, almost 300 operas, more than 100 sacred services, 20 symphonies, and more than 350 stage works, including Yiddish theatre, Purim and sacred plays, multi-media pieces, and musical theatre. In addition, original song cycles and liturgical services arranged for a modest to large complement of instruments are also included. The works are organized by composer and subdivided by genre, and each entry is fully annotated, detailing the title, opus, voicing and instrumentation, text source, commission, year completed, year and location of the premiere, the year of publication and the publisher (if any), the location of scores, and the duration of the work. The works are then broken down by theme, such as Biblical themes, works for children, works of the Holocaust or Jewish suffering and persecution, interfaith works, and wedding music. They are then cross-referenced by voice type, arrangement, and by title. A list of libraries and publishing houses of Jewish music rounds out this invaluable reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years ago, my health began deteriorating with a blood pressure reaching 200250. I became anemic, lost about 2023 kilograms within a short period, and developed severe abdominal pain followed by rectal bleeding. I was told I had a large rectal tumor that needed to be urgently removed. I was shocked and frightened. I traveled to Canada for a second opinion. After laboratory tests, it was a stage 34 colorectal cancer nearly obstructing my large bowel. I was subjected to an aggressive long cycle radiation and chemotherapy treatment followed by complex surgeries for years, after which I was declared cancer free. While in the hospital, particularly following the nine-hour surgery for tumor removal, I could not regain rapidly my vital signsmeaning, I was dead in medical terms. However, by the Lords grace, I opened my eyes. My spouse and I had several dreams pointing to a spirit of death rooming around me. As the scripture in Job 33:1418 says, For God does speak, now one way, now another in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men as they slumber in their beds. He may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings. I surely knew that believing in the Lord Jesus Christ and having faith in the Heavenly Father will instantly turn my desperate situation into a joyful one. I committed my time to reading regularly the Bible, and my family, relatives, and friends all over the world prayed for my healing and recovery. As written in Psalms 130:1, Out of the depths, I cry to You, O Lord. Together, we pleaded unto him, and he lifted me from down the valleys to the tops of mountains. Continual prayers acted as a strong medication to cure the illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Alongside that event, there are many Darwin Day celebrations planned to acknowledge his 200th birthday. Add to these the virulent attacks of the New Atheists, led by Richard Dawkins. Bible-believing Christians will be left increasingly challenged with the theory of evolution as the only model to explain the origins and age of the universe. In More Than a Theory, Hugh Ross, founder and president of Reasons To Believe, offers discerning readers a comprehensive, testable creation model to consider as an alternative. This fascinating resource will educate readers with a direct response to the recent and well-publicized challenges from aggressive atheists. In doing so, it also reminds the scientific community of what constitutes good science. Furthermore, it will supply Christians with the scientific information they need to defend their convictions that the God of the Bible is the Creator. Complete with several appendices that put common documents and stories to the same test, More Than a Theory is a bold, brave, and unapologetic work of apologetics that will stir much discussion in both the scientific and religious realms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Hatfield with all of his years of experience in marriage, parenting, family, missions and in the Church pulls no punches in calling Christ's Bride to return to His Truth (God's revealed Law-Word) regarding discipleship (men and women of faith and grace) in Manhood and Womanhood, outrageously successful spousal relations, parenting with training in romance, sexual satisfaction, love and marriage! He is calling all believers, especially men, to confession and repentance and to receive, understand and apply these Truths in the Power of the Holy Spirit as the only acceptable response in which God will revive and reform the Family and the Church in the 21st Century! Not for the weak-kneed, weak-minded or humanistically influenced, this is for Christ's Bride as we prepare for and anticipate His return! These applications of God's revealed Law-Word and His uncommon common sense in the lives of America's postmodern Christian culture and especially the promise of duplicating of these successes for love and marriage in our children, is exciting and challenging to the point of precedent setting magnitudes. The reader will experience riveting and exciting challenges to the status quo of our present day Christian culture. "Based on interviews with more than 1000 adults nationwide, the survey discovered that less than one out of every five adults believes that children under the age of 13 are being "superbly" or "pretty well" prepared for life emotionally, physically, spiritually, intellectually or physically. Fewer than one out of every twenty adults believes that America's youngsters are receiving above average preparation in all five of those areas of life." Americans Agree: "Kids Are Not Being Prepared for Life," The Barna Group-October 26, 2004 The couples, who discover the answers to the moral morass of our postmodern Christian culture, are those who know that the future of their children is in jeopardy and that we are in a war for the control of that future! Sadly, the statistics of broken homes, divorces, adultery, domestic violence, drugs and promiscuity - to mention only some of the ills of our culture - are almost equally divided between "Christian" families and non-Christian families. This is unacceptable as a comparison and must change. Consequently, fathers and mothers of faith and grace are those - who are and or who will experience - God's promise of victory over these fruits of our fallen nature and live a marriage experience that captures the best of God's gifts of love, sex and romance in marriage. Daddy's Little Girl and Mommy's Little Boy brings us clear evidence of just how America's Christian couples can have this victory in their marriage and how to duplicate this success in their sons and daughters.
