Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1977. In the summer of 1971, there was a workshop in an ill-defined field at the intersection of psychology, artificial intelligence, and linguistics. The fifteen participants were in various ways interested in the representation of large systems of knowledge (or beliefs) based upon an understanding process operating upon information expressed in natural language. This book reflects a convergence of interests at the intersection of psychology and artificial intelligence. What is the nature of knowledge and how is this knowledge used? These questions lie at the core of both psychology and artificial intelligence.

Book excerpt: The first comparative examination of planning paradigms This text begins with the principle that the ability to anticipateand plan is an essential feature of intelligent systems, whetherhuman or machine. It further assumes that better planning resultsin greater achievements. With these principles as a foundation,Planning in Intelligent Systems provides readers with the toolsneeded to better understand the process of planning and to becomebetter planners themselves. The text is divided into two parts: * Part One, "Theoretical," discusses the predominant schools ofthought in planning: psychology and cognitive science, organizational science, computer science, mathematics, artificialintelligence, and systems theory. In particular, the book examinescommonalities and differences among the goals, methods, andtechniques of these various approaches to planning. The result is abetter understanding of the process of planning through thecross-fertilization of ideas. Each chapter contains a shortintroduction that sets forth the interrelationships of that chapterto the main ideas featured in the other chapters. * Part Two, "Practical," features six chapters that center on acase study of The Netherlands Railways. Readers learn to applytheory to a real-world situation and discoverhow expanding theirrepertoire of planning methods can help solve seemingly intractableproblems. All chapters have been contributed by leading experts in thevarious schools of planning and carefully edited to ensure aconsistent high standard throughout. This book is designed to not only expand the range of planningtools used, but also to enable readers to use them moreeffectively. It challenges readers to look at new approaches andlearn from new schools of thought. Planning in Intelligent Systemsdelivers effective planning approaches for researchers, professors, students, and practitioners in artificial intelligence, computerscience, cognitive psychology, and mathematics, as well as industryplanners and managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renita Schmidt and P. L. Thomas The guiding mission of the teacher education program in the university where we teach is to create teachers who are scholars and leaders. While the intent of that mission is basically sound in theory—we instill the idea that teachers at all levels are professionals, always learning and growing in knowledge—that theory, that philosophical underpinning does not insure that the students who complete our program are confident about the act or performance of teaching. In our unique program, students work closely with one teacher and classroom for the entire senior year and then are supervised and mentored during their first semester of teaching; the program is heavily field-based, and it depends on the effectiveness of mentoring throughout the methods coursework and the first semester of full-time teaching. Students tell us this guidance and support is invaluable, and yet we feel the disjuncture between university and school just as many of you in more traditional student teaching settings. Students hear “best practice” information from us in methods classes and they receive ample exposure to the research supporting our field, but have a hard time implementing research-based practices in their cla- room settings and an even harder time finding it in the classrooms around them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are both fans of watching animated stories. Every evening, before or after d- ner, we always sit in front of the television and watch the animation program, which is originally produced and shown for children. We find ourselves becoming younger while immerged in the interesting plot of the animation: how the princess is first killed and then rescued, how the little rat defeats the big cat, etc. But what we have found in those animation programs are not only interesting plots, but also a big chance for the application of computer science and artificial intelligence techniques. As is well known, the cost of producing animated movies is very high, even with the use of computer graphics techniques. Turning a story in text form into an animated movie is a long and complicated procedure. We came to the c- clusion that many parts of this process could be automated by using artificial - telligence techniques. It is actually a challenge and test for machine intelligence. So we decided to explore the possibility of a full life cycle automation of c- puter animation generation. By full life cycle we mean the generation process of computer animation from a children s story in natural language text form to the final animated movie. It is of course a task of immense difficulty. However, we decided to try our best and to see how far we could go.
