Download or read book Thomas Moran written by Thomas Moran and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated catalog of Thomas Moran’s field sketches includes an interpretive essay tracing the artist’s seventy-year career in the field; a chronological, stylistic, and geographical survey of his fieldwork; an illustrated checklist of the 1080 sketches in public collections. Moran is best known for his work in the American West during the post-Civil War expansion, particularly in what would become Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Yosemite national parks. Yet this virtuoso painter and draftsman also traveled in search of inspiration in Pennsylvania, New York’s Long Island, Florida, Wisconsin, Mexico, England, Scotland, Wales, France, and Italy, returning repeatedly to favorite subjects. An almost compulsive desire to sketch refined his innate skill as one of America’s finest landscape artists. Most of Moran’s known field sketches are reproduced here. As described in the introduction, “their range encompasses summary contour drawings of the spectacular topography of the American West, luminous watercolors that simultaneously fix local color and evoke the artist’s rapturous response to the natural world, and fully realized works that nevertheless preserve the intensity of Moran’s firsthand experience of his plein air subjects.” No serious formal study of Thomas Moran can be made without reference to this volume.

Book Synopsis London’s Women Artists, 1900-1914 by : Mengting Yu
Download or read book London’s Women Artists, 1900-1914 written by Mengting Yu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on untapped archives, as well as aggregating a wide range of existing published sources, this book recalibrates the understanding of women artists’ roles, outputs and receptions in London during what was indubitably a vibrant and innovative period in the history of British art, and in which the work of their male contemporaries is so well understood. The book takes its starting point from Alicia Foster’s article “Gwen John’s Self-Portrait: Art, Identity and Women Students at the Slade School,” published in 2000, where the expression “a talented and decorative group” was coined to describe common attitudes towards women artists in the late 19th and early 20th century London. This pejorative attribution strongly implied a status less significant to that of their male counterparts. The author challenges this statement's basic tenet by casting a wide net in examining women’s art education from the Slade School of Fine Art, through to the role of its graduates within a selection of London’s exhibition groups, societies and publications. This book also reconstructs ‘from scratch’ the role of the Women’s International Art Club (WIAC), hitherto entirely overlooked in art historical studies of the era. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in art and cultural history, gender studies, and in sociological studies of pre-War World War Britain.
Book Synopsis Lydia Hosto Niebuhr by : John Clifford Helt
Download or read book Lydia Hosto Niebuhr written by John Clifford Helt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography is about an immigrant’s daughter who remained in the shadows of her father, husband, sons, and daughter. But it is also about the theological tradition—German Evangelical Pietism—that shaped her and that she helped to shape. That tradition is also hidden—or buried—for its tendency to embarrass modern sensitivities. As such it remains deeply misunderstood. Grounded in the history of the Prussian Union and the pietism of the free mission houses of Germany, it is evangelical in a way that is unrecognizable and bears little resemblance to the evangelicalism of the twenty-first century. In its pietism, it exudes an irenic approach to theological and doctrinal differences, in a way that is altogether misunderstood. It is focused on peacemaking and deeds of loving and just action in the world, rather than theological precision. The sad history of this tradition is that like the story of Lydia—both have been buried in the religious landscape of twentieth-century American Protestantism. It is time that the story of Lydia Hosto Niebuhr be emancipated from a church history that has minimized the story of many of its most important giants simply because they were born at a time when their stories were less valued than the men they supported and the sons they birthed and nurtured in the church. The biography of Lydia Hosto Niebuhr corrects and recalls what has been buried and hidden, and in doing so offers an alternative to the polarization of the political and religious fields of the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A noteworthy investigation of the Darwinian element in American fiction from the realist through the Freudian eras. theories of sexual selection and of the emotions are essential elements in American fiction from the late 1800s through the 1950s, particularly during the Freudian era and the years surrounding the Scopes trial. the Sex Problem, and what resulted was a great diversity of American narratives aligned with either Darwinian or a number of anti-Darwinian theories of evolution. Included are intriguing discussions of works by Frank Norris, Jack London, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, Gertrude Stein, Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, F. Scott Fitzgerald, five writers of the Harlem Renaissance, John Steinbeck, and Ernest Hemingway. Among the ideas explored are Darwin's theory of common descent; the question of man's place in nature; the possibility of evolutionary progress; the issues of heredity and eugenics; the Darwinian basis of Freud's theory of sexual repression; the quandary of male violence and the role of female choice in sexual selection; the power of and the problems o rracial and sexual selection; the power of and the problems of racial and sexual difference; and the ecological problems that arose directly from Darwin's theory of evolution. America's major narratives of human life and love and will be appreciated by literary scholars and readers interested in Darwinism and culture.
