Book excerpt: The Almanda Project is restoring rare and beautiful native habitat along eight riparian areas (wetland areas along watercourses) of the Scott Creek sub-catchment within the Scott Creek Conservation Park. Scott Creek Conservation Park is an important biodiversity hotspot of considerable conservation value in the Mount Lofty Ranges south of Adelaide, South Australia. There are few surviving examples of riparian areas in the Mount Lofty Ranges due to land clearing and draining farmland since European settlement. The riparian areas that remain are rapidly degrading due to livestock grazing, week invasion, active erosion, and altered water regimes. The Friends of Scott Creek was established in 1990 and, since that time, have been restoring habitat in the Conservation Park. The Friends group initiated the Almanda Project in 2014 to restore native habitat for twenty-six state-threatened species and two state-threatened species in the eight important riparian areas. The Almanda Project is named after the Almanda Swamp and Creek system in the centre of the park, where historic ruins of an old silver mine, established in 1868, can still be seen today. The project is restoring and increasing the extent of quality of habitat by strategically removing large infestations of serious environmental weeds to facilitate natural regeneration and targeted revegetation. The project is integrated with regional and local government conservation programs. The Almanda Report 2016 begins with a progress report from Peter Wotton, the new president of Friends of Scott Creek Conservation Park, in which he pays tribute to Tom Hands, the highly regarded founding president who sadly passed away late last year. The report describes the methods for successful weed management and the work being done in each of the major creek systems, including Almanda Creek, Blackwater Creek, Fern Gully, and Mackereth Creek. The Mackereth Creek system will realize the benefits of a long-term plan thanks to a partnership with the US-based clothing company Patagonia Inc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 is the most comprehensive review of the status of Australia's avifauna ever attempted. The latest in a series of action plans for Australian birds that have been produced every decade since 1992, it is also the largest. The accounts in this plan have been authored by more than 300 of the most knowledgeable bird experts in the country, and feature far more detail than any of the earlier plans. This volume also includes accounts of over 60 taxa that are no longer considered threatened, mainly thanks to sustained conservation action over many decades. This extensive book covers key themes that have emerged in the last decade, including the increasing impact of climate change as a threatening process, most obviously in Queensland's tropical rainforests where many birds are being pushed up the mountains. However, the effects are also indirect, as happened in the catastrophic fires of 2019/20. Many of the newly listed birds are subspecies confined to Kangaroo Island, where fire destroyed over half the population. But there are good news stories too, especially on islands where there have been spectacular successes with predator control. Such uplifting results demonstrate that when action plans are followed by action on the ground, threatened species can indeed be recovered and threats alleviated.

Book excerpt: Wildlife conservation in Australia owes much to the ideas of a controversial mathematics professor whose attention-grabbing actions made him at once famous and widely vilified. John Wamsley overcame childhood disadvantage and trauma to create first a private sanctuary called Warrawong, then Earth Sanctuaries Limited, the world’s first publicly listed company devoted solely to wildlife conservation. His company fell from a great height, but its influence has been enormous. This is the story of that enterprise and the man who founded it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. This book is a landmark study into the variable character of the South Australian coast and its long-term evolution.

Book excerpt: The Eames House Conservation Management Plan (CMP) provides a framework for the care, management, and conservation of the Eames House, also known as Case Study House No. 8, an internationally renowned work of modern architecture designed by Charles and Ray Eames. The CMP was developed using an internationally recognized, values-based methodology. It analyzes the historical, documentary, and physical site evidence to develop a thorough understanding of the place, followed by an assessment of its heritage significance. These assessments provided the foundation for development of a series of policies, some general and some specific to particular elements of the site, intended to guide the conservation, interpretation, and management of the Eames House in a manner that preserves its cultural significance for future generations.
