Book Synopsis Place and Persistence in the Lives of Newfoundland Women by : Marilyn Porter
Download or read book Place and Persistence in the Lives of Newfoundland Women written by Marilyn Porter and published by Aldershot, England : Avebury. This book was released on 1993 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newfoundland is a little known island which lies in the cold Labrador current off the Atlantic coast of Canada. While its proximity to the valuable Grand Banks fisheries made it one of the earliest parts of North America to be settled by Europeans, Newfoundlanders, this text argues, have endured centuries of poverty and exploitation. It contends that the brief burst of prosperity that followed their entry into the Canadian federation has now foundered in the present economic recession and the collapse of the fishery, and that life in Newfoundland has returned to what it has always been - a struggle for survival in a harsh environment.

This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is endorsed by Dr. Clar Doyle in his preface to this book. Dr. Doyle is very well known locally. This book is about the contemporary life of grandparents in Newfoundland and Labrador – a geographically isolated and culturally unique rural region of Canada. The book can be used for courses in the areas of critical social work, family studies, gerontology, nursing, rural development, critical pedagogy, and diaspora studies. Clar Doyle, Professor of Education, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and member of the Founding Scholars Advisory Board, The Paulo and Nita Freire International Project for Critical Pedagogy. “This book offers a platform not only to look in on the lives of vital grandparents but paints, in broad strokes, a mural of coming, changing, as well as challenging cultural and social settings.... In what the astute editors ....call “small nuanced studies” we find telling narratives of generational connections in the face of changing and challenging odds....This book does a great service to the concept of diaspora, as well as to the changing nature of that concept... This book elevates the status of grandparents by positioning them as vital members of a complex and challenging society where their skills, gifts, and sheer presence are most formative.... As is strongly advocated in this book, it is essential that educators, curriculum developers, and teachers appreciate the place of grandparents in their students’ lives.”

Book Synopsis Through the Scope of Life by : María Antonia González Valerio
Download or read book Through the Scope of Life written by María Antonia González Valerio and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers intriguing philosophical inquiries into biotechnological art and the life sciences, addressing their convergences as well as their epistemic and functional divergences. Rooted on a thorough understanding of the history of philosophy, this work builds on critical and ontological thought to interpret the concept of life that underscores first-hand dealings with matter and experimentation. The book breaks new ground on the issue of animality and delivers fresh posthumanist perspectives on the topics addressed. The authors embark on a deep ontological probe of the concept of medium as communication-bridging and life-bearing. They also take on the concept of performativity as biotechnological art. The book includes concrete, well-documented case studies and shows how certain narratives and practices directly impact ideas surrounding science and technologies. It will interest philosophers in art and technology, aesthetics, ontology, and the life sciences. It will also engage art practitioners in art and science, curators and researchers.

Download or read book Immigrant Lives written by Edward Shizha and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Voluntary and involuntary human mobility in the form of migration is a natural human phenomenon which has been a central feature from the ancient times into the modern times. While the boundaries between voluntary and involuntary migrants are blurred, voluntary migrants in the context of this book refer to those who migrate out of their own free choice based on socioeconomic considerations while involuntary migrants are forced to leave their country out of fear of persecution or insecurity caused by political violence or civil and military strife. In this book, the terms, 'newcomer', 'foreign born' and 'migrant' and 'immigrant' are used interchangeably and refer to those who were born in another country and later emigrated to another country as permanent residents (later becoming citizens), asylum seekers and refugees. Migration is an increasing challenge faced by countries, institutions and individuals in both sending and receiving countries. In countries where there is a large inflow of immigrants, migration has created a multiple-origin, transnationally connected, socio-economically differentiated and legally stratified demographic landscape which lends itself to a description of superdiverse societies (Jensen & Gidley, 2014; Vertovec, 2007). Most industrialized countries - mostly in the Global North - are experiencing low birth rates and are dependent on immigrants to satisfy their job market and population growth while less developed nations - mostly in the Global South - are experiencing low economic growth, inadequate socioeconomic opportunities. These social and economic challenges are presently the cornerstone of migration, transnationalism and transnationality"--
Book Synopsis Research as Accompaniment by : Martín Renzo Rosales
Download or read book Research as Accompaniment written by Martín Renzo Rosales and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume expands conversations about participatory, community-engaged, and action-oriented research that inspires social change. The authors contend that long-term community partnerships, inspired by solidarity and characterized by equality and reciprocity, result in a deep understanding of community concerns and increase the likelihood that research findings will have an impact on both the community partners and the broader society. Such research relationships, the authors maintain, are best understood as accompaniment. This book recognizes the potential as well as constraints of conceptualizing research as accompaniment and emphasizes that this approach is both a continuum and a process. Suitable for students and scholars of ethnographic and qualitative methods (and professionals using those methods, such as those in non-government organizations), it will appeal to those interested in research with communities in a wide variety of social science and other disciplines, including anthropology, nursing, and public health, amongst others.

Book Synopsis Gerontological Social Work in Action by : Wendy Hulko
Download or read book Gerontological Social Work in Action written by Wendy Hulko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerontological Social Work in Action introduces "anti-oppression gerontology" (AOG), a critical approach to social work with older adults, their families, and communities. AOG principles are applied to direct and indirect practice and a range of topics of relevance to social work practice in the context of a rapidly aging and increasingly diverse world. Weaving together stories from diverse older adults, theories, research, and practical tools, this unique textbook prompts social workers to think differently and push back against oppressive forces. It pays attention to issues, realities, and contexts that are largely absent in social work education and gerontological practice, including important developments in our understanding of age/ism; theories of aging and social work; sites and sectors of health and social care; managing risk and frailty; moral, ethical and legal questions about aging including medical assistance in dying; caregiving; dementia and citizenship; trauma; and much more. This textbook should be considered essential reading for social work students new to or seeking to specialize in aging, as well as those interested in the application of anti-oppressive principles to working with older adults and researching later life.
Book Synopsis Newfoundland Modern by : Robert Mellin
Download or read book Newfoundland Modern written by Robert Mellin and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In over 220 drawings and photographs, Robert Mellin presents the development of architecture in the decades immediately following Newfoundland's 1949 union with Canada. Newfoundland's wholehearted embrace of modern architecture in this era affected planning as well as the design of cultural facilities, commercial and public buildings, housing, recreation, educational facilities, and places of worship, and Premier Joseph Smallwood often relied on modern architecture to demonstrate the progress made by his administration. Mellin explores the links between Smallwood and modern architecture, revealing how Smallwood guided the development of numerous architectural projects. He also looks at the work of two innovative local architects, Frederick A. Colbourne and Angus J. Campbell, showing how their architecture was influenced by their life-long interest in art. The first comprehensive work on an important period of architectural development in urban and rural Newfoundland, Newfoundland Modern complements Mellin's award-winning book on the outport of Tilting, Fogo Island.

Book Synopsis Dementia Lab 2022: The Residue of Design by : Maarten Houben
Download or read book Dementia Lab 2022: The Residue of Design written by Maarten Houben and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers the revised and selected contributions to the 6th Dementia Lab Conference, D-Lab 2022, held on September 20-22, 2022, in Leuven. It describes original and innovative research on how design can contribute to the quality of life of people with dementia, their loved ones, and caregivers. The papers highlight the value of participation within design, analyzing it at three levels: personal, product, and organizational. The presented ideas and findings address ‘The Residue of Design’ and go beyond the initial impact of the design itself by looking at what benefits design research brings for people with dementia. The papers cover topics such as the development of creative design methods to foster participation and engagement from people with dementia, evaluation studies or critical reflections that reveal the impact of products and the built environment in dementia care, and raising awareness and countering stigma in societal views on dementia.
