Book Synopsis Henry Dresser and Victorian ornithology by : Henry A. McGhie
Download or read book Henry Dresser and Victorian ornithology written by Henry A. McGhie and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the life of Henry Dresser (1838–1915), one of the most productive British ornithologists of the mid-late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and is largely based on previously unpublished archival material. Dresser travelled widely and spent time in Texas during the American Civil War. He built enormous collections of skins and eggs of birds from Europe, North America and Asia, which formed the basis of over 100 publications, including some of the finest bird books of the late nineteenth century. Dresser was a leading figure in scientific society and in the early bird conservation movement; his correspondence and diaries reveal the inner workings, motivations, personal relationships and rivalries that existed among the leading ornithologists.
Book Synopsis Bird Migration across the Himalayas by : Herbert H. T. Prins
Download or read book Bird Migration across the Himalayas written by Herbert H. T. Prins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds migrating across the Himalayan region fly over the highest peaks in the world, facing immense physiological and climatic challenges. The authors show the different strategies used by birds to cope with these challenges. Many wetland avian species are seen in the high-altitude lakes of the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan Plateau, such as Bar-Headed Geese. Ringing programmes have generated information about origins and destinations, and this book is the first to present information on the bird's exact migratory paths. Capitalising on knowledge generated through satellite telemetry, the authors describe the migratory routes of a multitude of birds flying over or skirting the Himalayas. The myriad of threats to migratory birds and the wetland system in the Central Asian Flyway are discussed, with ways to mitigate them. This volume will inform and persuade policy-makers and conservation practitioners to take appropriate measures for the long-term survival of this unique migration.
Book Synopsis Ecology and Biogeography of High Altitude Insects by : M.S. Mani
Download or read book Ecology and Biogeography of High Altitude Insects written by M.S. Mani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my book Introduction to High Altitude Entomology, published in 1962, I summa rized the results of eight years' studies, mainly on the Himalaya. I have since then had the opportunity of studying the collections of high altitude insects from the Alps, Carpathians, Caucasus, Urals, Alai-Pamirs, Tien Shan, Altai and other im portant mountains of the world in different museums and institutions in Europe. Through the courtesy and generosity of the Academy of Sciences of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, I was also able to personally collect insects and make valuable field observations on the Caucasus, the Alai-Pamirs, Ala-Tau and the Tien Shan mountains. Through comparative studies I have tried to synthesize the fundamental principles of high altitude entomology. I have described here the distinctive characters of the high altitude environment, the ecological specializations of the high altitude insects, their ecological inter relations and the outstanding peculiarities of their biogeography. I have also pre sented here an outline of the high altitude entomology of the principal mountains of the world, with brief accounts of their orogeny, geology and vegetation. This book differs from all other contributions in the field in its comparative ecological approach and in the fact that the main emphasis is throughout on the evolution of the high altitude ecosystem as an integral part of the orogeny. High mountains are, in all parts of the world, important and independent centres of origin and differ entiation of distinctive and highly specialized ecosystems and faunas.

Book Synopsis Freedom Fighters of India (in Four Volumes) by : M G Agrawal
Download or read book Freedom Fighters of India (in Four Volumes) written by M G Agrawal and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the long drawn political struggle for the attainment of swaraj several leaders representing various regions of our sub-continent played their historic role. Each volume contains the significant phase of the movement which generated the spirit of patriotism among the millons of people. This multivolume work illuminates the role played by the Freedom Fighters during the freedom struggle. In fact, besides majority community, all minorities have played important role in freedom struggle. Dalit leaders equally played important role in 1857. This multivolume work thus highlights the contributions of people from all sections of society in the freedom movement during Indian freedom. This is an attempt to draw upon their remembrance of the freedom struggle. Efforts have been made to include Freedom Fighters from various regions. The reminiscences of these unsung heroes reveal deep dedication and spirit with which they fought against the atrocities of the British risking their life and profession. The history of Freedom Movement would be incomplete without mentioning the contribution of women. In the Volume IV, we can study about women who participated in the freedom struggle and made rich contribution in various ways. Some of them were imprisoned, fined and suffered for freedom, and their contributions cannot be overlooked. The great contributions of these ladies and lords should be brought to the knowledge of the present generation, and this would be the best way to pay homage to them. This multivolume is a tribute to the Freedom Fighters in India s freedom movement.
