Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Papers of Asa Gray, Vol. 1 Asa gray's first scientific paper was published in 1834 his last was written in 1887, a few weeks before the end of his life. The number of his contributions to science and their variety are remarkable, and astonish his associates even, familiar as they were with his intellectual activity, his vari ous attainments, and that surprising industry which neither assured position, the weariness of advancing years, nor the hopelessness of the task he had imposed upon himself, ever diminished. Professor Gray's writings may be naturally grouped in four divisions. The first in importance contains his contributions to descriptive botany. These with few exceptions were de voted to the flora of North America, and although it did not fall to his lot, as it did to that of some of his contemporaries, to elaborate any one of the great families of plants, the extent and character of his contributions to systematic botany will place his name among those of the masters of the science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Papers of Asa Gray, Vol. 2 This collection, it is well known, after the death of the younger Linnaeus, found its way to England, from whence it is not probable that it will ever be removed. The late Sir James Edward Smith, then a young medical student, and a botanist of much promise, was one morning informed by Sir Joseph Banks that the heirs of the younger Linnaeus had just ofiered him the herbarium with the other collections and the library of the father, for the sum of 1000 guineas. Sir Joseph Banks not being disposed to make the purchase, recommended it to Mr. Smith; the latter, it appears, immediately decided to risk the expectation of a moderate independence, and to secure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, the wild animal story emerged in Canadian literature as a distinct genre, in which animals pursue their own interests—survival for themselves, their offspring, and perhaps a mate, or the pure pleasure of their wildness. Bringing together some of the most celebrated wild animal stories, Ralph H. Lutts places them firmly in the context of heated controversies about animal intelligence and purposeful behavior. Widely regarded as entertaining and educational, the early stories—by Charles G. D. Roberts, Ernest Thompson Seton, John Muir, Jack London and others—had an avid readership among adults and children. But some naturalists and at least one hunter—Theodore Roosevelt—discredited these writers as "nature fakers," accusing them of falsely portraying animal behavior. The stories and commentaries collected here span the twentieth century. As present day animal behaviorists, psychologists, and the public attempt to sort out the meaning of what animals do and our obligations to them, Ralph Lutts maps some of the prominent features of our cultural landscape. Tales include: • The Springfield Fox by Ernest Thompson Seton • The Sounding of the Call by Jack London • Stickeen by John Muir • Journey to the Sea by Rachel Carson Other selections include esssays by Theoore Roosevelt, John Burroughs, Margaret Atwood, and Ralph H. Lutts. postamble();

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Papers and Addresses, Vol. 1 These volumes contain a selection of the most important Essays contributed by the late Professor Rolleston to the Transactions of various learned Societies and to scientific Journals. Along with them are also reprinted several Addresses delivered before the British Association for the Advancement of Science and other learned bodies. These reprints have been arranged in the following sections: I. Anatomy and Physiology, in which are included many important Anthropological memoirs; II. Zoology, including his Memoirs on Archseo-zoology; III. Archaeology; IV. Addresses and Miscellaneous papers. Amongst the unpublished manuscripts left by Dr. Rolleston were notes on various subjects of archaeological interest, which, owing to the failure in health that for some months preceded his much lamented death, he had evidently been unable to prepare for publication. Of these, his notes on the site of some Roman pottery works discovered in 1879 at the Mynchery upon the Sewage Farm near Littlemore, Oxford; also notes on archaeological discoveries made both at Wytham, Berks, and at Yarnton, Oxfordshire, are of much interest. Unfortunately these notes are too fragmentary to be reproduced in the form in which he left them, but I have prepared a digest, which has been printed as an appendix to the second volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States in Their Botanical, Horticultural, and Popular Aspects, Vol. 1 Not the least among the author's gratifications is the complimentary manner in which the work has been received by his botanical associates. It was a task rarely attempted, to bring exact botanical knowledge to a level with popular comprehension, - to give it a place among a great variety of the more cultivated branches of knowledge, - and, above all, to accommodate such a work to the popular purse. That this could be successfully accomplished the author had the courage to hope, but he was scarcely prepared for the cordiality with which eminent men of science have received this people's work as an acceptable contribution to scientific literature. Amongst these the author has especially to make his acknowledgments to Professor Asa Gray, who in Silliman's journal of the Arts and Sciences for May, 1879, compares the drawings not unfavorably with those of Mr. Sprague, who for many years has been at the head of botanical drawing in this country. Considering the very low price at which this work is supplied, the fact that Professor Gray Should have been led to compare it with the best and most expensive botanical work in our country, must be accepted as very high praise. We may now only say that while the publication of the work has been transferred to the American Natural History Publishing Company, Lim ited, of Philadelphia, an association organized primarily for the purpose.
