This book was released on 2011 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) assesses the competencies of 15-year-old students around the world. In 2006, the PISA report focused on the science competencies 15-year-old students developed. The report does not reflect a systematic consideration of science learning environments in schools and their relationship to cognitive and motivational outcomes in terms of scientific literacy. However, in all investigated countries, schools are where young people become familiar with science over an extended period of time. Hence, this book aims to provide detailed information on science teaching and learning in schools in the OECD countries. Data from the PISA 2006 school principals’ and students’ questionnaires is used for the description of science teaching and learning. First, the context of science teaching in schools is described to provide a background for the analyses that follow. Then, the book draws a detailed picture of different components of science teaching relevant for student learning. In addition, international patterns of science teaching and learning are investigated. The investigation focuses on the teaching of scientific enquiry. This focus is chosen because the process of scientific enquiry models the way in which researchers think, and it provides students with ample opportunities to develop science literacy. Further investigations include the effects of different patterns of science teaching on student literacy. The book concludes with implications for policy and practice.

Book excerpt: This volume is dedicated to Professor Arto Salomaa on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The 32 invited papers contained in the volume were presented at the festive colloquium, organized by Hermann Maurer at Graz, Austria, in June 1994; the contributing authors are well-known scientists with special relations to Professor Salomaa as friends, Ph.D. students, or co-authors. The volume reflects the broad spectrum of Professor Salomaa's research interests in theoretical computer science and mathematics with contributions particularly to automata theory, formal language theory, mathematical logic, computability, and cryptography. The appendix presents Professor Salomaa's curriculum vitae and lists the more than 300 papers and 9 books he published.

Book excerpt: Environmental research has driven landmark improvements that led to the protection of human and ecosystem health. Recognizing the value of knowledge generated by environmental research and the ingenuity within academic and nonprofit institutions, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created a program known as Science to Achieve Results, or STAR, in 1995. STAR is EPA's primary competitive extramural grants program. A Review of the Environmental Protection Agency's Science to Achieve Results Research Program assesses the program's scientific merit, public benefits, and overall contributions in the context of other relevant research and recommends ways to enhance those aspects of the program. This report also considers the conclusions and recommendations of a prior National Research Council review of the STAR program (2003), the STAR program's research priorities in light of the nation's environmental challenges, and the effects of recent STAR funding trends on obtaining scientific information needed to protect public health and the environment.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how a telescope brings objects closer or how cameras take pictures? How boats float or aeroplanes fly? All of these seemingly complicated things can be explained by basic science. With the help of this book, you will construct many weird, wonderful and wacky experiments that you can have hours of fun with! Is the deadline for your science fair project quickly approaching? Not to worry, the 'Last Minute Science Fair Ideas’ series is written in an easy to follow format that will guide you to create an exciting science project for the upcoming fair. The science projects in each of the books of this 4-volume series are conveniently sorted according to the approximate time required to complete each experiment. The 70 projects contained in this science experiment e-book cover a wide range of scientific topics; from Chemistry and Electricity to Life Sciences and Physics… there are even experiments on earth science, astronomy and geology all designed for science students from grade 1 to 8! With this book, you are sure to find a project that interests you. When you are interested in a certain science topic, you will have more fun, and learn more, too! Amongst many others, you will make a fluid for copying newsprint to blank sheets of paper, make your own lava lamp with oil and water, Use a wristwatch and the sun as a compass, mapping how far the sun is from the moon, measuring the height of your school with the use of the sun, learning how to read an electricity consumption meter, fill a nylon stocking with nothing but static electricity, mapping the positions of tastes of your tongue, making a Snellen chart to test your friends’ eyesight, Study how much air weigh by making a balance and many, many more! When making these gadgets, you’ll discover that science is a part of every object in our daily lives, and who knows, maybe someday you will become a famous inventor too! Designed with safety in mind, most of the items you will need for the experiments, such as jars, aluminium foil, scissors and sticky tape, you can find around your home. Others, such as magnets, lenses or a compass, you will be able to buy quite cheaply at a hobby shop or hardware store.

Book excerpt: One of the pathways by which the scientific community confirms the validity of a new scientific discovery is by repeating the research that produced it. When a scientific effort fails to independently confirm the computations or results of a previous study, some fear that it may be a symptom of a lack of rigor in science, while others argue that such an observed inconsistency can be an important precursor to new discovery. Concerns about reproducibility and replicability have been expressed in both scientific and popular media. As these concerns came to light, Congress requested that the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conduct a study to assess the extent of issues related to reproducibility and replicability and to offer recommendations for improving rigor and transparency in scientific research. Reproducibility and Replicability in Science defines reproducibility and replicability and examines the factors that may lead to non-reproducibility and non-replicability in research. Unlike the typical expectation of reproducibility between two computations, expectations about replicability are more nuanced, and in some cases a lack of replicability can aid the process of scientific discovery. This report provides recommendations to researchers, academic institutions, journals, and funders on steps they can take to improve reproducibility and replicability in science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all major planets and moons in our Solar System have been visited by spacecraft and the data they have returned has revealed the incredible diversity of planetary surfaces. Featuring a wealth of images, this textbook explores the geological evolution of the planets and moons. Introductory chapters discuss how information gathered from spacecraft is used to unravel the geological complexities of our Solar System. Subsequent chapters focus on current understandings of planetary systems. The textbook shows how planetary images and remote sensing data are analyzed through the application of fundamental geological principles. It draws on results from spacecraft sent throughout the Solar System by NASA and other space agencies. Aimed at undergraduate students in planetary geology, geoscience, astronomy and solar system science, it highlights the differences and similarities of the surfaces at a level that can be readily understood by non-specialists.
