Book Synopsis Crop Post-Harvest: Science and Technology, Volume 3 by : Debbie Rees
Download or read book Crop Post-Harvest: Science and Technology, Volume 3 written by Debbie Rees and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade in high value perishables has grown enormously in the past few decades. In the developed world consumers now expect to be able to eat perishable produce from all parts of the world, and in most cases throughout the year. Perishable plant products are, however, susceptible to physical damage and often have a potential storage life of only a few days. Given their key importance in the world economy, Crop Post-Harvest Science and Technology: Perishables devotes itself to perishable produce, providing current and comprehensive knowledge on all the key factors affecting post-harvest quality of fruits and vegetables. This volume focuses explicitly on the effects and causes of deterioration, as well as the many techniques and practices implemented to maintain quality though correct handling and storage. As highlighted throughout, regular losses caused by post-harvest spoilage of perishable products can be as much as 50%. A complete understanding, as provided by this excellent volume, is therefore vital in helping to reduce these losses by a significant percentage. Compiled by members of the world-renowned Natural Resources Institute at the United Kingdom's University of Greenwich, with contributions from experts around the world, this volume is an essential reference for all those working in the area. Researchers and upper-level students in food science, food technology, post-harvest science and technology, crop protection, applied biology and plant and agricultural sciences will benefit from this landmark publication. Libraries in all research establishments and universities where these subjects are studied and taught should ensure that they have several copies for their shelves.

Book Synopsis Parking Structures by : Anthony P. Chrest
Download or read book Parking Structures written by Anthony P. Chrest and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parking Structures provides a single-source reference for parking structure designers, builders, and owners. This third edition is still the only such book. It addresses how to select the best functional and structural designs for a given situation, ensure long-term durability, design for easy maintenance, decide on the number and placement of entrances and exits, design an easily understood wayfinding system, design for ADA compliance, plan for internal auto and pedestrian traffic circulation, select the most effective and energy efficient lighting system, avoid the most common design and construction pitfalls, provide for adequate patron safety and security, carry out needed repairs, and extend the parking structure life. Parking Structures addresses all the major issues related to parking garages. It is an essential reference for parking structure owners, structural engineers, architects, contractors, and other professionals. New in the third edition: This third edition of Parking Structures includes new material on metric dimensions and recommendations for functional design globally, new research on flow capacity and queuing at parking entry/exits, an entirely new chapter on planning for a new parking structure, including cost issues and alternatives to structure construction, pedestrian considerations, safety in parking facilities, plazas above parking structures, an expanded chapter on seismic design, seismic retrofit, life cycle cost analysis, and upgrades to existing structures.

Download or read book Silviculture written by Ralph D. Nyland and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silviculture: Concepts and Applications reflects a belief that all the tools of silviculture have a useful role in modern forestry. Through careful analysis and creative planning, foresters can address a wide array of commodity and nonmarket interests and opportunities while maintaining dynamic and resilient forests. A landowner’s needs, circumstances, and site conditions guide a silviculturist’s judgment and decision making in finding the best ways to integrate the biologic-ecologic, economic-financial, and managerial-administrative requirements at hand. The Third Edition of this influential text provides a foundational basis for rigorous discussion of techniques. The inclusion of numerous real-world examples and balanced coverage of past and current practices broadens the concept of silviculture and the ways that managers can use it to address both traditional and emerging interests in forests. A thorough discussion of new and proven interpretations increasingly directs the attention of foresters toward the role silviculture plays in creating, maintaining, rehabilitating, and restoring forests that can sustain an expanding variety of ecosystem services.

Book Synopsis Meiofauna Biodiversity and Ecology by : Federica Semprucci
Download or read book Meiofauna Biodiversity and Ecology written by Federica Semprucci and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sedimentary habitats cover the vast majority of the ocean floor and constitute the largest ecosystem on Earth. These systems supply fundamental services to human beings, such as food production and nutrient recycling. It is well known that meiofauna are an abundant and ubiquitous component of sediments, even though their biodiversity and importance in marine ecosystem functioning remain to be fully investigated. In this book, the meiofaunal biodiversity trends in marine habitats worldwide are documented, along with the collection of empirical evidence on their role in ecosystem services, such as the production, consumption, and decomposition of organic matter, and energy transfer to higher and lower trophic levels. Meiofaunal activities, like feeding and bioturbation, induce changes in several physico-chemical and biological properties of sediments, and might increase the resilience of the benthic ecosystem processes that are essential for the supply of ecosystem goods and services required by humans. As a key component of marine habitats, the taxonomical and functional aspects of the meiofaunal community are also used for the ecological assessment of the sediments’ quality status, providing important information on the anthropogenic impact of benthos.
