Book Synopsis Gender Indicators in Science, Engineering and Technology by : Sophia Huyer
Download or read book Gender Indicators in Science, Engineering and Technology written by Sophia Huyer and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This toolkit provides a survey of the differential gender patterns of participation by men and women in science and technology. It assesses information provided by current sex-disaggregated quantitative data, along with discussing the reasons for differential rates of participation between women and men. The volume also looks at international methods for measuring science and technology activities, personnel and qualifications, and occupations, as well as how these can be properly disaggregated by sex, age and other variables. A key question addressed includes how to define economic and employment activities that can constitute or incorporate scientific and technological activities.--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Advanced Research Instrumentation and Facilities by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Advanced Research Instrumentation and Facilities written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-01-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the instrumentation needs of the nation's research communities have changed and expanded. The need for particular instruments has become broader, crossing scientific and engineering disciplines. The growth of interdisciplinary research that focuses on problems defined outside the boundaries of individual disciplines demands more instrumentation. Instruments that were once of interest only to specialists are now required by a wide array of scientists to solve critical research problems. The need for entirely new types of instrumentsâ€"such as distributed networks, cybertools, and sensor arraysâ€"is increasing. Researchers are increasingly dependent on advanced instruments that require highly specialized knowledge and training for their proper operation and use. The National Academies Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy Committee on Advanced Research Instrumentation was asked to describe the current programs and policies of the major federal research agencies for advanced research instrumentation, the current status of advanced mid-sized research instrumentation on university campuses, and the challenges faced by each. The committee was then asked to evaluate the utility of existing federal programs and to determine the need for and, if applicable, the potential components of an interagency program for advanced research instrumentation.
Book Synopsis Gender Differences at Critical Transitions in the Careers of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Faculty by : National Research Council
Download or read book Gender Differences at Critical Transitions in the Careers of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Faculty written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-06-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Differences at Critical Transitions in the Careers of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Faculty presents new and surprising findings about career differences between female and male full-time, tenure-track, and tenured faculty in science, engineering, and mathematics at the nation's top research universities. Much of this congressionally mandated book is based on two unique surveys of faculty and departments at major U.S. research universities in six fields: biology, chemistry, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, and physics. A departmental survey collected information on departmental policies, recent tenure and promotion cases, and recent hires in almost 500 departments. A faculty survey gathered information from a stratified, random sample of about 1,800 faculty on demographic characteristics, employment experiences, the allocation of institutional resources such as laboratory space, professional activities, and scholarly productivity. This book paints a timely picture of the status of female faculty at top universities, clarifies whether male and female faculty have similar opportunities to advance and succeed in academia, challenges some commonly held views, and poses several questions still in need of answers. This book will be of special interest to university administrators and faculty, graduate students, policy makers, professional and academic societies, federal funding agencies, and others concerned with the vitality of the U.S. research base and economy.
