Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and the Criminal In the following pages I have endeavoured to give some account of the ways in which scientific discovery has been utilised in the struggle between society and the criminal. I have tried to describe the principles upon which different kinds of scientific evidence are based, and at the same time to bring human interest into what would otherwise tend to be dry detail by giving an outline of trials in which such evidence has been given. It is, perhaps, hardly necessary to mention that in many of these illustrative trials the accused persons were proved innocent of the charges brought against them, and that although their cases were tried in the criminal courts the title of the book in no way applies to them. For the accounts of the older trials I have drawn freely upon Cobbett's State Trials, Paris and Fonblanque's Medical Jurisprudence, and the first edition of Taylor's Medical Jurisprudence, while I must also acknowledge my indebtedness to the Circumstantial Evidence of Mr. Justice Wills and the recent excellent lectures on Forensic Chemistry, by Mr. Jago. In the later cases I have mainly relied upon contemporary accounts and upon my own impressions of some of the trials at which I have been present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Criminal His Personnel and Environment: A Scientific Study Physical and moral soundness excites no criticism and creates little interest, it being the normal condition of man. Departure therefrom arouses attention in proportion to its seriousness, and lays open a wide field of speculative inquiry in the direction of cause and cure, as exploited by theorist and experimentalist. This constitutes the ground of criminological science, if such it may be termed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The legal profession in particular has a duty to familiarize itself with the principles of that science, as the sole means for intelligent and systematic improvement of the criminal law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Mayfair Magician: A Romance of Criminal Science Despite the venerable antiquity of the saying, it is not always true that "Out of evil cometh good," but certainly out of the apparent evil of the snow-burst which, on the morning of a Christmas Eve not many winters ago, suddenly buried H. M. Prison at Nethermoor from the sight of heaven and cut it off from mall communication with the rest of earth, there came to me two good things in the shape of spontaneously offered and most generous hospitality, and one of the strangest stories of what I can only call inverted genius and diverted human power that it has ever been my good fortune to hear. I had been visiting Nethermoor, which, as you doubtless know, is situated on one of the southern slopes of the Scottish border hills, during the course of a series of studies of British and Continental prison systems, and I had to be up early to catch the train to Newcastle if I was to have any chance of spending Christmas at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Popular Science Monthly, Vol. 8 HE first traditional crime, the fratricide of Abel, was a natural outgrowth from the conditions of, society, which, compared to the present relations of civilized men, existed germ-like around him. These conditions alone gave motive and direction to the deed. To all the after-centuries of human crime this primal offense has existed as a type. Both in cause and effect it is reduced to its simplest pro portions. The criminal represents the retrograde tendency of society; the savagism which exists in every community. Order and progress are preserved by an irrepressible conflict waged on the border-land, as it were, of civilization. Many of these crimes grow out of the artificial wants of society. Others are but relative and belong to particular conditions, or orders of men, and at other times and places are without meaning and void of offense. Thus society is ever eager for the warfare, and, at the time it creates the crime, prepares the weapons for its punishment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expert Witness and the Applications of Science and of Art to Human Identification, Criminal Investigation, Civil Actions IN some respects this book may be regarded as a sequel to my Science and the Criminal, part of which was also concerned with the problems of circumstantial proof, but in its more restricted field its scope is wider, since it discusses not only the methods of scientific proof, but also specialised evidence of every kind. Although the word expert is tending to fall into disuse in America, there is no word in this country which quite covers the same ground, for it connotes a special form of evidence, which, by the way, may be far from justifying its description of expert in the sense of skilled. The book owes much to the kindness of those who have allowed me to make use of their material and illustrations. In particular, I wish to thank Messrs. Wilder and Wentworth, and their publisher, Mr. R. Badger, for the readiness with which they gave me permission to quote from their standard work Personal Identification, and also for various communications and photographs which they have sent me privately. On writing the chapter on Experts in Art, I have been indebted to Major Kaye for the loan of the blocks of radiographs of Old Masters, which he kindly put at my disposal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education, Personality Crime: A Practical Treatise Built Up on Scientific Details, Dealing With Difficult Social Problems Science has till recently been regarded as the fad of a few, but, now that its commercial value is being appreciated, it is rising to a place of recognition. Biology and Psychology are, however, still regarded, especially by the legal profession, as essentially mythical. There are many burning questions, as education, marriage and crime, which are in a chaotic condition, the subjects of party strife; and yet there is only one way in which these difficulties can be met. That way is by bending to the laws of science, of biology, of physiology, and psychology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
