Inklusion ist zu einem bedeutenden Schlagwort der bildungspolitischen, erziehungswissenschaftlichen sowie der pädagogisch-praktischen Diskussionen geworden. Die ersten Versuche von gemeinsamem Unterricht von Kindern mit und ohne Behinderungen fanden in Deutschland 1970 statt. Das Thema gewann immer mehr an Bedeutung bis hin zur UN-Konvention von 2006, welche das erste universelle Rechtsdokument darstellt, in dem die Menschenrechte einzelner Länder an die unterschiedlichen Lebensausgangslagen von Menschen mit Behinderung(en) angepasst werden. Im Vordergrund steht nun nicht mehr Diskriminierung zu unterbinden, sondern die Chancengleichheit von Menschen mit Behinderungen zu fördern und letztendlich herzustellen. Die Ratifikation dieses Übereinkommens verpflichtet die Vertragsstaaten dazu, auf lange Sicht die komplette Verwirklichung aller Menschenrechte zu gewährleisten. Auf Grundlage der bildungspolitischen Bedeutsamkeit, ethischen und moralischen Gründen sowie der Verpflichtungen, die UN-Konvention umzusetzen, ist die Inklusion ein wichtiges Thema für die heutige Schulpädagogik- und Didaktik.
