Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Stress in the Occupations sets a new agenda for stress research and gives fresh impetus to scholars who wish to focus on issues and problems associated with specific jobs, some of which have received little attention in the past. Written by researchers who are true experts in the field of each occupation, this comprehensive Handbook reviews stress in a wide range of jobs including transport, education, farming, fishing, oil rig drilling, finance, law enforcement, fire fighting, entrepreneurship, music, social services, prisons, sport, and health including surgery, internship, dentistry, nursing, paramedics, psychiatry and social work. Several occupations such as oil rig drilling are reviewed; these jobs have always been stressful but have received little attention by researchers, and only now receive more focus due to the Bay of Mexico accident. Other occupations demand more of our attention because there have been substantial technological changes in particular jobs, such as in dentistry, nursing, and surgery. This lucid and insightful compendium will be a source of inspiration for those in the helping professions and all those individuals working in the industries described in the book. More specifically, the Handbook will strongly appeal to human resource specialists, psychologists, occupational health and safety professionals, managers, nurses and therapists. Written in highly accessible language, it will also provide rich reading to lay audiences including job incumbents themselves, as well as specialists in industry and academia. Academics and postgraduate students of business, management, and psychology will find plenty of detailed information regarding stress associated with occupations.

Book excerpt: It was a curse for Mr Fox to be a black overseas-trained teacher in the United Kingdom. Not only was his pay lower on average than his peers, but he experienced a pervasive culture of racism. In The Ugly Face of Institutional Racism in the United Kingdom, author Vupenyu waMwamba presents a thorough and comprehensive analysis of racial undercurrents in British education. Bringing the unique perspective of a Cambridge-educated teacher, he draws upon personal experience and a wealth of research from primary sources to capture a snapshot of the state of the British education system. waMwamba tells the story through a character he calls Mr Fox, who was dismissed and banned from teaching for life for trying to challenge racism and racial discrimination at his workplace. The Ugly Face of Institutional Racism in the United Kingdom calls attention to the plight of black educators in England and makes a call to action for reform.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to investigate how the pedagogic space of schools and classrooms has been defined by the UK government’s counter-terrorism ‘Prevent’ strategy, most notably through the requirement on teachers not to undermine ‘fundamental British values’ as part of the Teachers Professional Standards. The term ‘fundamental British values’ migrated from Prevent to the statutory framework that regulates teacher professionalism and has effectively securitized education practice. The Prevent strategy was conceived in response to the 7/7 bombings in London by so-called ‘home-grown’ Muslim terrorists. The need for teachers to promote British values is an attempt to forge a cohesive British identity among young citizens within a multiracial, multicultural and multilingual society. However, as the chapters in this book illustrate, the state project to harness education to engender belonging – or as some would argue, civic nationalism – whilst simultaneously undertaking surveillance of children and young people from the Muslim community for signs of radicalization, has led to the perception of a hierarchy of citizens or, conversely, ‘insider-outsider’ citizens. The imperative to promote, and not undermine, fundamental British values has, in some instances, transformed the safe space of the classroom where children and young people’s right to explore their perceptions of current affairs, citizenship and belonging has been curtailed for fear of surveillance by teachers who may interpret their utterances as either undermining British values or to be signs of radicalization. This book explores these dilemmas for teachers and the implications for their professionalism, and examines how racist nativism has pervaded society, educational policy and practice through the promotion of a Britishness perceived by many as a raced, classed and exclusionary discourse. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Education for Teaching.

In respect of teachers' professional responsibilities and conditions of employment, the Review Body recommends, that: the Department consult all interested parties on the Review Body's draft statement of purposes and professional responsibilities; that the Department should re-structure the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD, ISBN 9780112711988) to make it more coherent and user-friendly; that the Department should investigate long working hours for teachers and head teachers. Issues discussed include: the take-up of science and mathematics at GCSE and A-level, the provision of careers advice to students, student attitude and choice, problems in the recruitment and retention of teachers, the quality of teaching methods and the role of continuing professional development. The Committee concludes that science teaching in schools is vital to support innovation and growth in the UK economy, particularly given that the booming economies of China and India are supported by increasing numbers of well-qualified science graduates.
