Book excerpt: The School Discipline Consensus Report presents a comprehensive set of consensus-based and field-driven recommendations to improve conditions for learning for all students and educators, better support students with behavioral needs, improve police-schools partnerships, and keep students out of the juvenile justice system for minor offenses. More than 100 advisors representing policymakers, school administrators, teachers, behavioral health professionals, police, court leaders, probation officials, juvenile correctional leaders, parents, and youth from across the country helped develop more than two dozen policies and 60 recommendations to keep more students in productive classrooms and out of court rooms.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this book is to inspire Christian clergymen, leaders, and educators as well as parents and students to embrace, promote, and support the God-ordained vision and mission of private Christian day schools. Also, this book profoundly expounds on how and why Christian day schools are very much relevant or needed in todays troublesome world. This book is divided into four parts, which expounds on foundational principles of a Christian day school, God-ordained assignments in the organizational structure of a Christian day school, practical components of a quality Christian day school, and posterity of Christian day schools. The importance of being called, equipped, and anointed by God to serve within any capacity of a Christian day school is highlighted in this book as well. Most importantly, Christian day schools are established to meet the needs of the whole child: spirit, soul, and body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are increasingly alarmed over our nation's educational deficiencies. Though anxieties about schooling are unending, especially with public institutions, these problems are more complex than institutional failure. Expenditures for education have exploded, and far exceed inflation and the rising costs of health care, but academic achievement remains flat. Many students are unable to graduate from high school, let alone obtain a college degree. And if they do make it to college, they are often forced into remedial courses. Why, despite this fiscal extravagance, are educational disappointments so widespread? In Bad Students, Not Bad Schools, Robert Weissberg argues that the answer is something everybody knows to be true but is afraid to say in public America's educational woes too often reflect the demographic mix of students. Schools today are filled with millions of youngsters, too many of whom struggle with the English language or simply have mediocre intellectual ability. Their lackluster performances are probably impervious to the current reform prescriptions regardless of the remedy's ideological derivation. Making matters worse, retention of students in school is embraced as a philosophy even if it impedes the learning of other students. Weissberg argues that most of America's educational woes would vanish if indifferent, troublesome students were permitted to leave when they had absorbed as much as they could learn; they would quickly be replaced by learning-hungry students, including many new immigrants from other countries. American education survives since we import highly intelligent, technically skillful foreigners just as we import oil, but this may not last forever. When educational establishments get serious about world-class mathematics and science, and permit serious students to learn, problems will dissolve. Rewarding the smartest, not spending fortunes in a futile quest to uplift the bottom, should become official policy. This book is a bracing reminder of the risks of political manipulation of education and argues that the measure of policy should be academic achievment.

Book excerpt: “This book merits every American’s serious consideration” (Vice President Joe Biden): from the Secretary of Education under President Obama, an exposé of the status quo that helps maintain a broken system at the expense of our kids’ education, and threatens our nation’s future. “Education runs on lies. That’s probably not what you’d expect from a former Secretary of Education, but it’s the truth.” So opens Arne Duncan’s How Schools Work, although the title could just as easily be How American Schools Work for Some, Not for Others, and Only Now and Then for Kids. Drawing on nearly three decades in education—from his mother’s after-school program on Chicago’s South Side to his tenure as Secretary of Education in Washington, DC—How Schools Work follows Arne (as he insists you call him) as he takes on challenges at every turn: gangbangers in Chicago housing projects, parents who call him racist, teachers who insist they can’t help poor kids, unions that refuse to modernize, Tea Partiers who call him an autocrat, affluent white progressive moms who hate yearly tests, and even the NRA, which once labeled Arne the “most extreme anti-gun member of President Obama’s Cabinet.” Going to a child’s funeral every couple of weeks, as he did when he worked in Chicago, will do that to a person. How Schools Work exposes the lies that have caused American kids to fall behind their international peers, from early childhood all the way to college graduation rates. But it also identifies what really does make a school work. “As insightful as it is inspiring” (Washington Book Review), How Schools Work will embolden parents, teachers, voters, and even students to demand more of our public schools. If America is going to be great, then we can accept nothing less.

Book excerpt: The relationships between improvements to facilities and accurate enrollment counts and an academic plan for the District of Columbia public schools were explored in a hearing that was part of a series on the D.C. public schools. Representative Thomas Davis (Virginia) spoke of the progress being made in improving the D.C. schools and the great deal that remained to be done. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (District of Columbia) also praised the efforts of the appointed interim administrators and noted the tasks ahead for the school system. The first panel began with remarks by Patricia Harvey, director of urban education for the National Center on Education and the Economy, who spoke of the importance of prevention, early intervention, acceleration, and accountability. Marlene Berlin, chair of a parents' coalition, talked about parent participation and community involvement. Delabian Rice-Thurston, director of Parents United, focused on standards and funding. A general discussion followed, with emphasis on the importance of parent participation. The second panel of the day began with remarks by Kathleen Patterson, member of the D.C. City Council, who talked about the importance of small classes and small schools in long-range planning. The second panel member was Joyce Ladner, member of the District of Columbia Financial Responsibility and Management Assistance Authority (Control Board), who discussed the recent appointment of Arlene Ackerman as Superintendent of Schools. Bruce MacLaury, Chairman of the D.C. Public Schools Emergency Board of Trustees, reviewed some of the needs of the school system as Ms. Ackerman assumes her position. Remarks by Julius W. Becton, retiring appointed Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent of the school system, and Arlene Ackerman, recently appointed Superintendent, rounded out the discussions. Prepared statements of the witnesses are included in the hearing report. (SLD)
