During-the last decade a number Of score cards by which school plants and their equipment may be rated have been devised. Each Of these is composed Of a num ber Of items, most Of which apply to building plans as well as to buildings already in existence. In addition to the list Of items, several cards provide, either as an integral or as an accompanying part Of the scale, more or less detailed suggestions both as to the accepted standards and the most common deviations below these standards. Thus a superintendent or anyone may use these scales not only for actually rating a school plant or proposed plans but also for improv ing faults in an existing plant. It is true that these scales yield more reliable ratings when used by experts but they in general are simple enough and are accompanied by such directions that they can be used with profit by a school administrator who is willing to devote a little time to their study. The salutary effect of open air treatment for tuberculosis had long been known, and the idea of educating the minds of weakly children while curing their bodies was proposed and carried out. In a pine forest outside the city, in the suburb of Charlottenburg, a pavilion was erected, and one hundred and twenty tuberculous children were sent there for the experiment. They stayed all day, received three nourishing meals prepared on the premises, and had rest, play, and study hours. Three months later these children returned to their schools, completely cured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Planning Secondary School Buildings In this volume, the authors have endeavored to envisage the secondary school of the future. It will not be a standardized school. American communities will continue to plan and build to meet their local requirements. The school building will be planned to make the curriculum work. It will offer expanded opportunities for learning. It will serve, not a limited number of special minds, but will advance the individual interests of the various types of youth. It will make provision for learning the social arts as well as for growing in physical health and emotional stability. It will be the educational focus of its community serving youth and adults alike. It will become a superior educational and inspirational center for all American youth. This volume has been long in preparation. During three decades many of the Engelhardt students in school administration in Teachers College, Columbia University, participated in discussions and conferences, the results of which appear in these chapters. Architects, with whom the authors have been associated as educational consultants, have raised issues and offered suggestions that have been incorporated here for school building improvement. During the five year period, 1942-1947, N. L. Engelhardt, Sr., as Associate Superintendent of Schools of New York City in charge of'the Division of Housing and Business Administration, supervised the preparation of the New York City Manual of School Planning, modification of which has been included in several chapters. Scores of individuals contributed to the development of this manual. School board members and superintendents of schools and their staffs, who have frequently made valuable contributions to the planning of school buildings in association with the authors as educational consultants, will find many of their ideas incorporated here. Several sections of Volume VII, Planning Guides for San Francisco's School Buildings, prepared by the authors as a part of the twelve volume school building survey report of that city in 1948 have also been modified or expanded for inclusion in various chapters of this book. In their surveys of the school plant of cities in all parts of the United States, the authors have discovered unusually excellent characteristics of high school buildings, recording of which here has been felt worthwhile for future planners.
