Book excerpt: This book challenges readers to consider the consequences of commercialism and business influences on and in schools. Critical essays examine the central theme of commercialism via a unique multiplicity of real-world examples. Topics include: *privatization of school food services; *oil company ads that act as educational policy statements; *a parent's view of his child's experiences in a school that encourages school-business partnerships; *commercialization and school administration; *teacher union involvement in the school-business partnership craze currently sweeping the nation; *links between education policy and the military-industrial complex; *commercialism in higher education, including marketing to high school students, intellectual property rights of professors and students, and the bind in which professional proprietary schools find themselves; and *the influence of conservative think tanks on information citizens receive, especially concerning educational issues and policy. Schools or Markets?: Commercialism, Privatization, and School-Business Partnerships is compelling reading for all researchers, faculty, students, and education professionals interested in the connections between public schools and private interests. The breadth and variety of topics addressed make it a uniquely relevant text for courses in social and cultural foundations of education, sociology of education, educational politics and policy, economics of education, philosophy of education, introduction to education, and cultural studies in education.

Book excerpt: School-business partnerships can be a valuable supplement to the public education system, especially in an era of limited resources. The business and industrial community can provide support for schools in a number of ways, including awards to students and teachers, scholarships, equipment loans, on-the-job training, curriculum revision, part-time employment, and direct participation in instruction. To establish such a partnership, principals and business people should take the following steps: (1) clarify their own and each other's expectations; (2) identify firms with desired expertise; (3) hold a well-planned meeting or luncheon for firm representatives, faculty, parents, and students; (4) establish a time-line with desired outcomes and specific activities; (5) appoint a project coordinator; and (6) agree on a method of evaluation. Examples are provided of six successful partnership programs, along with suggestions for additional resources (such as senior citizens and small business people). The program should optimally provide learning opportunities for all students, both college-bound and non-college-bound. (TE)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking School-University Partnerships: A New Way Forward provides educational leaders in K-12 schools and colleges of education with insight, advice, and direction into the task of creating partnerships. In current times, colleges of education and local school districts need each other like never before. School districts struggle with pipeline, recruitment, and retention issues. Colleges of education face declining enrollment and a shifting educational landscape that fundamentally changes the way that teachers are trained and what local school districts expect their teachers to be able to do. It is with these overlapping constraints and converging interests that partnerships emerge as a foundational strategy for strengthening the education of our teachers. With nearly 80 contributors from 16 states (and Jamaica) representing 39 educational institutions, the partnerships described in this book are different from the ways in which colleges of education and school districts have traditionally worked with one another. In the past, these loose relationships centered primarily on student teaching and/or field experience placements. In this arrangement, the relationship was directed towards ensuring that the local schools were amenable to hosting students from the college of education so that the student/candidate could complete the requirements to earn a teaching license. In our view, this paradigm needs to be enlarged and shifted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent literature indicates that most public schools have some manner of partnership with businesses (DeHaviland Associates, 2007; Orsini, 2016; Rivkin et al., 2014); however, there is criticism that such partnerships lack clear evidence of positive student outcomes and that the products are simply not worth the expense and effort used to construct and maintain them (Brent & Lunden, 2009). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the practices of school districts in the Capital Region of New York State in establishing relationships with for-profit businesses. Specifically, the research focused on the purposes and impact of these partnerships as well as the logistical and ethical obstacles that stand in the way of success. The research focused on three case studies of school districts with established partnerships as identified by experts in the field. Data were gathered through interviews, documents, and observations of school-business interactions. Key findings included that districts established partnerships for the purpose of authentically addressing 21st century skills, professional learning, and community relations. It was also found that the districts studied did not establish clear measurements for success on the impact of school-business partnerships and had few policies or processes in place to guard against ethical dangers or measure partnership success. From these findings, it was suggested that: 1) State legislation should focus on encouraging business to be co-equal partners with schools; 2) Boards of Education should adopt baseline policies safeguarding students; 3) Boards of Education should adopt policies to ensure equal access to experiential learning; 4) school districts should establish clear goals for accountability; 5) school districts should establish formal processes for entering partnerships; and 6) school districts should work to establish true collaborative partnerships with businesses. It was also recommended that future research should expand the scope of this study, limit the focus to specific kinds of partnerships, and shift to the study of how schools can make partnerships better instead of focusing on whether or not they should take place.
