Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1645, the Roxbury Latin School is the oldest school in continuous existence in North America. "Schola Illustris" is how Cotton Mather described the School when he wrote about it in 1690. The School's 350th anniversary is the occasion of this new account of Roxbury Latin's unique place in the history of American education. Much of the history of American education has been written from the perspective of the public schools. This book redresses the balance. Controlled from the beginning by an independent board of trustees (originally called "feoffees"), Roxbury Latin has served the public for 350 years - but not at public expense. Living by its wits, it has survived several near-death experiences and in good times has re-earned Cotton Mather's accolade. Readers interested in the plight of native Americans will find the story of John Eliot, "the Apostle to the Indians," especially compelling. Those interested in American social, economic, and religious history since the arrival of the European settlers will discover here a long-buried treasure of material to consider.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999. The articles in this collection focus on instruction - and writings arising from that instruction - in philosophy and the arts during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with emphasis on Central Europe. The introduction brings together and expands upon many of the topics discussed - and conclusions reached - in the remaining seven articles. Four of these articles are devoted to examining the significance of two ancient authors (Aristotle and Cicero) and of two more recent ones (Petrus Ramus and Bartholomew Keckermann). The article on Keckermann is based in part on previously unpublished biographical and bibliographical source materials. Two concepts - encyclopedia and philosophy - as utilized in the 16th and 17th centuries constitute the subject matter of separate articles. And one article focuses primarily on curriculum plans written during the 16th and early 17th centuries. These eight articles are based on a wide array of printed and manuscript source materials which are cited together with library/archive locations and call numbers and which are made more easily accessible through three indices at the conclusion of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prison Path: School Practices that Hurt Our Youth takes a unique and unapologetic look into the practices, social norms, construction, and policies within our schools that mirror prisons. From the physical building to the labeling and placement of special education students, schools are reflecting correctional institutions. Beyond the mundane and into the world of social cliques, discipline policies, uniforms, and ethics, this book highlights how similarities between schools and prisons create a hidden and dangerous environment for at-risk students. While many schools and teachers are doing the best they can while facing budget shortfalls, it is the inherent policies, procedures, and normalities that are thought of as being part of the school experience, that may be the most hazardous for at-risk students. Therefore, this book highlights these occurrences and juxtaposes them with similar situations within prisons, providing an eye-opening and daunting look at prisons and schools. This book will cause teachers and those within education to question the practices, policies, and norms that we consider part of the typical school experience. Some additional key features of this book include: Chapter by chapter examination of the similarities in prisons and school Detailed look at the process of special education labeling and its detrimental impact on students Examination of the role of social cliques and gangs in institutions A unique look at the school-to-prison pipeline In-depth questions to ask oneself about to improve schools Dangers of inviting school resources officers into schools and cutting guidance services Real-life scenarios

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1632, the Amsterdam regents founded an Athenaeum or 'Illustrious School'. This kind of institution provided academic teaching, although it could not grant degrees and had no compulsory four-faculty system. Athenaeums proliferated in the first century after the Dutch Revolt, but few of them survived long. They have been interpreted as the manifestation of an evolving vision of the role of a higher education; this book, by contrast, argues that education at the Amsterdam Athenaeum was staunchly traditional both in methods and in substance. While religious, philosophical and scientific disputes rocked contemporary Dutch learned society, this analysis of letters, orations and disputations reveals that a traditional and Aristotelian humanism thrived at the Athenaeum until well into the seventeenth century.
