Book Synopsis Fault Injection Techniques and Tools for Embedded Systems Reliability Evaluation by : Alfredo Benso
Download or read book Fault Injection Techniques and Tools for Embedded Systems Reliability Evaluation written by Alfredo Benso and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-10-31 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our society is faced with an increasing dependence on computing systems, not only in high tech consumer applications but also in areas (e.g., air and railway traffic control, nuclear plant control, aircraft and car control) where a failure can be critical for the safety of human beings. Unfortunately, it is accepted that large digital systems cannot be fault-free. Some faults may be attributed to inaccuracy during the development, while others can come from external causes such as environmental stress. Radiations, electromagnetic interference and power glitches are some of the most common causes of transient faults. As a consequence, the past years have seen a growing interest in methods for studying the behaviour of computer-based systems when faults occur, and several approaches have been proposed to evaluate the dependability properties of a computer-based system. Fault Injection, i.e., the artificial injection of faults into a computer system in order to study its behaviour, emerged as a viable solution, and has been deeply investigated by both academia and industry. Different techniques have been proposed and some of them practically experimented. Fault Injection Techniques and Tools for Embedded Systems Reliability Evaluation intends to be a comprehensive guide to Fault Injection techniques used to evaluate the dependability of a digital system. The description and the critical analysis of different Fault Injection techniques and tools will be authored by key scientists in the field of system dependability and fault tolerance.

Book Synopsis Body Schema and Body Image by : Yochai Ataria
Download or read book Body Schema and Body Image written by Yochai Ataria and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body schema is a system of sensory-motor capacities that function without awareness or the necessity of perceptual monitoring. Body image consists of a system of perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs pertaining to one's own body. In 2005 Shaun Gallagher published an influential book entitled How the Body Shapes the Mind (OUP). That book not only defined both body schema and body image, but explored the complicated relationship between the two. It also established the idea that there is a double dissociation, whereby body schema and body image refer to two different but closely related systems. Given that many kinds of pathological cases can be described in terms of body schema and body image (phantom limbs, asomatognosia, apraxia, schizophrenia, anorexia, depersonalization, and body dysmorphic disorder, among others), we might expect to find a growing consensus about these concepts and the relevant neural activities connected to these systems. Instead, an examination of the scientific literature reveals continued ambiguity and disagreement. This volume brings together leading experts from the fields of philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, and psychiatry in a lively and productive dialogue. It explores fundamental questions about the relationship between body schema and body image, and addresses ongoing debates about the role of the brain and the role of social and cultural factors in our understanding of embodiment.

Book Synopsis The Annual of Psychoanalysis, V. 28 by : Jerome A. Winer
Download or read book The Annual of Psychoanalysis, V. 28 written by Jerome A. Winer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 28 of The Annual features stimulating, original essays on the relationship between psychoanalysis and the neurosciences. Edelman's Neural Darwinism informs Barry's investigaton of the psychoanalytic theory of internalization and Fajardo's reassessment of "breaks in consciousness" whereas Gedo's hierarchical model of mental functioning informs Fisher's presentation of the treatment of an autistic child. Elsewhere, Hadley proposes a neurobiologically distinct motivational system devoted to the development of autonomy; Solms attempts to bridge psychoanalysis and the neurophysiology of dreaming; Levin and Trevarthen examine the relationship of conscious and unconscious functions to the executive control network (ECN) of the brain; Levin examines the contributions of chaos theory to psychoanalysis; and Modell explores metaphor as the crucial aspect of the developing mind and brain through which cognition itself occurs. Moraitis's examination of why analysis has been so slow to integrate its findings with the insights of contemporary neuroscience and cognitive psychology, and Sadow's reprise on the role of theory in the evolution of psychoanalysis usefully frame the contributions to this section. Section II of Volume 28 reengages a subject area for which The Annual has become well-known. The four characteristically excellent studies in applied psychoanalysis found here cover the effect of early father loss on the work of the American watercolorist Charles Burchfield, "The Creativity of Women," the unconscious influence of metaphor on attitudes and value judgments, and the application of self psychology to the dramas of Eugene O'Neill. It is altogether typical of this fine series that a collection of essays dedicated to the development of a psychobiologically sophisticated psychoanalysis should be followed by contributions that testify to the explanatory vitality of psychoanalysis with respect to issues of literature, art, and creativity.
Book Synopsis From Perception to Meaning by : Beate Hampe
Download or read book From Perception to Meaning written by Beate Hampe and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1987 landmark publications by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson made image schema one of the cornerstone concepts of the emerging experientialist paradigm of Cognitive Linguistics, a framework founded upon the rejection of the mind-body dichotomy and stressing the fundamentally embodied nature of meaning, imagination and reason - hence language. Conceived of as the pre-linguistic, dynamic and highly schematic gestalts arising directly from motor movement, object manipulation, and perceptual interaction, image schemas served to anchor abstract reasoning and imagination to sensori-motor patterns in the conceptual theory of metaphor. Being itself informed by preceding crosslinguistic work on semantic primitives in the linguistic representations of spatial relations (carried out by L. Talmy, R. Langacker, and others), the notion has inspired a large amount of subsequent research and debate on diverse issues ranging from the meaning, structure and acquisition of natural languages to the embodied mind itself. From Perception to Meaning is the first survey of current image-schema theory and offers a collection of original and innovative essays by leading scholars, many of whom have shaped the theory from the very beginning. The edition unites essays on major issues in recent research on image-schemas - from aspects of their definition and linguistic formalization, their psychological status and neural grounding to their role as semantic universals and primitives in language acquisition. The book will thus not only be welcomed by linguists of a cognitive orientation, but will prove relevant to philosophers, psychologists, and anthropologists interested in language, and indeed to anyone studying the embodied mind.
