After the middle of the century the emphasis in literary creation had shifted from a subjective, emotional point of view to a more objective and rationalistic attitude. If this seems only a roundabout way of saying that Romanticism yielded its dominance to Realism and Naturalism, the conc1usion is justified, but we should not yield too readily to the pseudo-scientific mania which urges us to force literature into a genus and species type of c1assification. It is customary to say that in the eighties and nineties, Nat uralism won a decisive victory over Romanticism and drove the partisans of the older movement from the field. At first glance this does, indeed, appear to be true. Hugo yields to Zola, Pushkin to Tolstoi, Tieck to Hauptmann. It is all quite simple.

Book excerpt: Although biological exploration in Surinam started about 300 years ago, a thorough account of the Surinam herpetofauna has not hitherto been publish ed. Several publications on the subject have been issued (see below), but none of them was comprehensive. However, there are several papers dealing with a part of the Surinam lizards. The main reason for the absence of a complete review of the Surinam lizards (and, for that matter, of the entire herpeto fauna) has been the scarcity of the material available in museum collection although some of the more common species reached museums in considerable numbers. Until about 1900 the interior of Surinam was virtually terra incognita and most collecting took place in a restricted, cultivated area along the coast and the farthest inland point reached was Berg en Dal on the Suriname River. From 1900 exploration of the interior was actively encouraged by the Dutch Government, and under the auspices of the Koninklijk Nederlandsch Aard rijkskundig Genootschap several geographical expeditions explored the main river systems. Although the main purpose of these expeditions was to map the visited areas, usually the physician accompanying the expedition was entrusted also with the collecting of zoological and botanical specimens. Interesting ma terial from the interior started to reach the Dutch museums in ever increasing numbers after the late nineteen thirties when Dr. D. C. GEIJSKES arrived in Su rinam. In the ten years that have passed since then, they have realized a rich and multi-faceted oeuvre. Eighteen projects from this oeuvre - those that most fire the imagination - are presented in DP6. Ten Years of Architecture. They range from the glass towers of the Walterbos complex in Apeldoorn to the archetypical wooden dwelling house in Driebergen, and from the striking red mega-cinema in a noise barrier to near Ede to the bridges for the Zuiderpark in Rotterdam. Besides comprehensive documentation of the projects, the book furnishes insight into the way in which DP6 deals with assignments. Designs are often created in two stages. Rational analsis is followed by a more intuitive process in which the emphasis is placed upon associative thought. This produces strongly sensory architecture in which a major role is often reserved for the landscape. DP6 is also notable for the way clients and users are involved in the genesis of a design. DP6. Ten Years of Architecture is a book about an architectural office that manifests itself without much propaganda or fuss but which is, at the same time, distinctive enough to claim a conspicuous position in the realm of Dutch architecture.
