Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These essays, reprinted from the New Yorker, evince the fastidious prose and finely tuned insights praised in Fraser's first book, The Fashionable Mind. Four pieces emphasize the competition and hype surrounding designers, models, photographers, advertising people, etc.; other articles observe the trendy international scene. Fraser exceeds herself in "As Gorgeous as It Gets," which describes, in glittering detail, cosmetician Estee Lauder and her retinue on travels to promote a new perfume at Nieman-Marcus in Dallas and Saks, Bloomingdale's and Macy's in New York City. This wonderful collection will amaze and amuse readers." —Publisher's Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fashion is one of the most powerful industries in the world, accounting for 6% of global consumption and growing steadily. Since the 1980s and the birth of the neoliberal economy, it has emerged as the glittering face of capitalism, bringing together prestige, power and beauty and occupying a central place in media and consumer fantasies. Yet the fashion industry, which claims to offer highly desirable job opportunities, relies significantly on job instability, not just in outsourced garment production but at the very heart of its creative production of luxury. Based on an in-depth investigation involving stylists, models, designers, hairdressers, make-up artists, photographers and interns, anthropologist Giulia Mensitieri goes behind fashion's glamorous facade to explore the lived realities of working in the industry. This challenging book lays bare the working conditions of 'the most beautiful job in the world,' showing that exploitation isn't confined to sweatshops abroad or sexual harassment of models, but exists at the very heart of the powerful symbolic and economic centre of fashion.

Book Synopsis Dancing out of Line by : Molly Engelhardt
Download or read book Dancing out of Line written by Molly Engelhardt and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing out of Line transports readers back to the 1840s, when the craze for social and stage dancing forced Victorians into a complex relationship with the moving body in its most voluble, volatile form. By partnering cultural discourses with representations of the dance and the dancer in novels such as Jane Eyre, Bleak House, and Daniel Deronda, Molly Engelhardt makes explicit many of the ironies underlying Victorian practices that up to this time have gone unnoticed in critical circles. She analyzes the role of the illustrious dance master, who created and disseminated the manners and moves expected of fashionable society, despite his position as a social outsider of nebulous origins. She describes how the daughters of the social elite were expected to “come out” to society in the ballroom, the most potent space in the cultural imagination for licentious behavior and temptation. These incongruities generated new, progressive ideas about the body, subjectivity, sexuality, and health. Engelhardt challenges our assumptions about Victorian sensibilities and attitudes toward the sexual/social roles of men and women by bringing together historical voices from various fields to demonstrate the versatility of the dance, not only as a social practice but also as a forum for Victorians to engage in debate about the body and its pleasures and pathologies.
