Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Properly researched and intelligently deployed, scenario planning is today’s most powerful tool for understanding and preparing for an uncertain future. Yet it remains a niche approach, poorly understood by leaders at large. To bring it into the strategy mainstream, leaders need advice on how to turn concepts (scenarios) into actions (strategy). Scenarios for Success delivers a unique and coherent account of the state of the scenario planning art. It is aimed particularly at those trying to implement its findings. Striking a balance between theory and practice, the contributors show how and why the core techniques of scenario thinking have endured and are still valuable, while bringing new tools and processes that keep scenario planning in touch with modern realities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenario planning helps organization leaders, executives and decision-makers envision and develop strategies for multiple possible futures instead of just one. It enables organizations to become resilient and agile, carefully calibrating their responses and adapting quickly to new circumstances in a fast-changing environment. This book is the most comprehensive treatment to date of the scenario planning process. Unlike existing books it offers a thorough discussion of the evolution and theoretical foundations of scenario planning, examining its connections to learning theory, decision-making theory, mental model theory and more. Chermack emphasizes that scenario planning is far more than a simple set of steps to follow, as so many other practice-focused books do—he addresses the subtleties and complexities of planning. And, unique among scenario planning books, he deals not just with developing different scenarios but also with applying scenarios once they have been constructed, and assessing the impact of the scenario project. Using a case study based on a real scenario project Chermack lays out a comprehensive five phase scenario planning system—project preparation, scenario exploration, scenario development, scenario implementation and project assessment. Each chapter describes specific techniques for gathering and analyzing relevant data with a particular emphasis on the use of workshops to encourage dialogue. He offers a scenario project worksheet to help readers structure and manage scenario projects as well as avoid common pitfalls, and a discussion, based in recent neurological findings, of how scenario planning helps people to overcome barriers to creative thinking. “This book is about action and performance. Compelling and thoroughly researched, it offers every business executive a playbook for including uncertainty in the organizational change process and driving competitive advantage”. -- Tim Reynolds, Vice President, Talent and Organization Effectiveness, Whirlpool Corporation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1965, Royal Dutch Shell started experimenting with a new approach to preparing for the future. This approach, called scenario planning, eschewed forecasting in favor of plausible alternative stories. By using stories, or scenarios, Shell aimed to avoid the false assumption that the future would look much like the presentan assumption that marred most corporate planning at the time. The Essence of Scenarios offers unmatched insight into the companys innovative practice, which still has a huge influence on the way businesses, governments, and other organizations think about and plan for the future. In the course of their research, Angela Wilkinson and Roland Kupers interviewed almost every living veteran of the Shell scenario planning operation, along with many top Shell executives from later periods. Drawing on these interviews, the authors identify several principles that characterize the Shell process and explain how it has survived and thrived for so long. They also enumerate the qualities of successful Shell scenarios, which above all must be plausible stories with logical trajectories. Ultimately, Wilkinson and Kupers demonstrate the value of scenario planning as a sustained practice, rather than as a one-off exercise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of scenario planning is rich and varied. Throughout the ages people have tried to make decisions today by studying the possibilities of tomorrow. When that tomorrow was more predictable and less fraught with uncertainty, those possibilities had a good chance of being the right ones. Now, however, the only given constant in a world of complexity is change itself. In an environment where information technology is driving an information revolution, and where the rules can be rewritten with breathtaking speed, planning can seem more based on luck than foresight. There are methods for coping with unpredictability. The Scenario planning techniques described in this book will help to think about uncertainty in a structured way. Based on Gill Ringland's previous book Scenario Planning: Managing for the Future, this updated and expanded version focuses specifically on scenarios planning in business. Scenario Planning in Business and its companion, Scenarios in Public Policy are both practical paperback books that each expand on specific areas of Scenario Planning. They will appeal to managers looking to learn about and apply a particular aspect of scenario planning. Reviews of Gill Ringland's prevoius work: "Nobody can ignore the future. This book is a must-read for any manager aspiring to put scenarios into practice." Arie de Geus, Former Director of Shell International Petroleum and author of 'The Living Company' "(Gill Ringland) offers us a mechanism by which to bring structure to information technology and other forms of complexity, offering us the vital ability to understand the dynamics of change." Oliver Sparrow, Chatham House Forum

Book excerpt: Scenario planning allows companies to move away from linear thinking and better understand external change. Eight years (and 30,000 copies) after publication Scenarios is still acknowledged as the definitive work in the field. Now, Kees van der Heijden brings his bestseller up to date, following up on his original case studies and adding significant new material. The Second Edition changes focus slightly by providing more in-depth analysis and application of the concept of the 'strategic conversation'. While maintaining the underlying rigour of the first edition, van der Heijden revisits the text to make it far more practical and accessible, and in doing so gives you the tools you need to set out and negotiate a successful future course for your organization in the face of significant uncertainty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are countless self-help books explaining what you must do to become successful, there are few describing the mistakes you should avoid on the road to success. I have discovered six scenarios you should eliminate from your life in order to become successful. No matter what your vocation, occupation, or interest may be and regardless of whether it is in your career or personal life, steer clear of these six pitfalls if you want to attain success. Lots of people would like to have an impressive six-pack. It might be the six-pack the young lady playing beach volleyball has attained or the one the ripped guy working out at the gym is sporting. Hey, it might even be a six-pack of imported beer you got through a friend in Belgium! While these six-packs might be enviable, the six-pack of scenarios I'm going to reveal throughout these pages does not turn anyone green with envy. Quite the opposite. Oftentimes success depends not on what one does, but rather on what one does not do. Isn't this one of the reasons we study history? Did one of your parents ever tell you they just wanted you to learn from their experiences and mistakes? Ever heard a coach say that if we avoid mistakes, we'll win the game? Errors are frequently a part of the game, but minimizing those errors increases our chances for winning. Such is the essence of this book: learning how to eliminate the bad habits that reduce your chances for success, whether in business, sports or in your personal life. Eliminate bad habits, and the opposite characteristics that allow one to be successful are more likely to occur. As late actor and comedian Mickey Rooney once stated, "You always pass failure on the way to success." Don't let a missed ground ball mess up the rest of your game! These six chapters are short and to the point. Isn't that the way you like the preacher to be on Sunday morning? Don't tell me how to build a watch, just tell me what time it is! Give me the nitty gritty; I'll fill in the blanks and details later. We all lead busy lives and are bombarded with far too much information. Facts come at us fast and furiously. You're probably used to grabbing the most important concepts from this avalanche of information; so I'm sure you'll get the gist of these points quickly and apply them accordingly. Success can be measured at many different levels. You don't have to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 Company, MVP at the Major League level, or President of the United States to be considered successful. In fact, many people have positively impacted other's lives, run successful businesses, been responsible citizens, accomplished financial and personal success, and been respected by others without being labeled the top dog. Regardless of their level of attainment, it would be fairly safe to say that these successful people have avoided most of these six scenarios on their road to achievement. The focus of this book is to show you how to sidestep these detrimental characteristics so you can achieve your personal version of success. Please invest a short period of time to read this book, whether during a coast-to-coast flight, a leisurely Sunday afternoon or during a conference call! If you have read my author bio, you've seen it's possible for a person from a plain, simple and moderate background to obtain moderate success, at least by this book's definition. The points I will address in the following pages are not intended to be insulting to the reader nor boastful about the author. They are intended to give credence to the fact that if you can avoid these habits, you can achieve success (at least by certain definitions). In the end, I hope you will feel your time reading this book was well-spent!

Book excerpt: To achieve a better understanding of the influence of National Culture, Corporate Culture and Leadership Style on Lean Six Sigma implementation and Corporate Success a quantitative empirical web-based survey with Lean Six Sigma professionals involved in the social professional network LinkedIn was carried out by Miriam Jacobs. The outcome of this survey suggests, that certain constellations of these five factors are more successful than others. Companies with an almost equal balance across different Leadership Styles and types of Corporate Culture achieve the best results, while companies equipped with a Rational and Hierarchical Corporate Culture in the absence of transformational, participative or supportive leadership are likely to fail.
