Book Synopsis Scattering of Molecular Beams by Metallic Surfaces by : John J. Hinchen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modulated molecular beam techniques were employed to measure the spatial distribution of rare gases reflected or scattered from polycrystalline platinum. The density distribution of the molecules about the target was measured with a movable detector and molecular velocity changes which occurred during collisions between the beam and target at different temperatures were determined through observation of shifts in the phase of the modulated beam signals. The results are that diffuse scattering is obtained from ''dirty'' surfaces, while the reflections obtained after surface cleaning by heating at a pressure of 10 to the minus 9th power torr are specular in character. The reflected beams are not, however, found at the true specular angle, and the dependence of this angular deviation on experimental parameters was studied. From the data of collision induced molecular velocity changes, energy accommodation coefficients are calculated, and the results are correlated with changes in scattering distributions. Accommodation coefficients obtained with a clean platinum surface agree with literature values for clean metallic surfaces as determined by a hot filament technique. (Author).

Book Synopsis Scattering of Thermal Energy Gas Beams by Metallic Surfaces Ii by : John J. Hinchen
Download or read book Scattering of Thermal Energy Gas Beams by Metallic Surfaces Ii written by John J. Hinchen and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering of molecular gases from platinum and tantalum was studied using an ultra-high vacuum molecular beam apparatus. Beams of the rare gases, nitrogen, oxygen, methane and water vapor were used. The angle of maximum intensity of the scattered gas beams had a dependency on experimental variables that was in fair agreement with theory. Surface contamination and roughness affected the intensity and spatial distribution of scattered beams, but no difference between polycrystalline and single crystal metal surfaces was observed. By using phase-sensitive-detection techniques, the velocity of scattered molecules was found to vary with angular position about the surface. Energy and momentum coefficients were evaluated from the experimental data. Under certain conditions, discontinuities and negative values were found for these coefficients; such excursions in energy accommodation have been theoretically predicted. The experimental results were used in analysis of free molecule and slip flows. (Author).
Book Synopsis Molecular Beam Scattering from Ultrathin Metallic Films by : Christoph Steinsiek
Download or read book Molecular Beam Scattering from Ultrathin Metallic Films written by Christoph Steinsiek and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the goals of studying molecule-surface interactions is to understand the details of the chemical reactivity at surfaces. The exchange of energy between a gas and a solid is a complex sequence of events even when focused on a model system like a diatomic molecule scattering from a monocrystalline metal surface. Due to the number of energy channels of the molecule (translational, rotational and vibrational energy) and the surface (phonons, electrons) involved, a detailed knowledge about the role of each of these degrees of freedom in the collision is necessary for the modeling of such ...
Book Synopsis Dynamics of Gas-Surface Interactions by : Ricardo Diez Muino
Download or read book Dynamics of Gas-Surface Interactions written by Ricardo Diez Muino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a representative survey of the state of the art of research on gas-surface interactions. It provides an overview of the current understanding of gas surface dynamics and, in particular, of the reactive and non-reactive processes of atoms and small molecules at surfaces. Leading scientists in the field, both from the theoretical and the experimental sides, write in this book about their most recent advances. Surface science grew as an interdisciplinary research area over the last decades, mostly because of new experimental technologies (ultra-high vacuum, for instance), as well as because of a novel paradigm, the ‘surface science’ approach. The book describes the second transformation which is now taking place pushed by the availability of powerful quantum-mechanical theoretical methods implemented numerically. In the book, experiment and theory progress hand in hand with an unprecedented degree of accuracy and control. The book presents how modern surface science targets the atomic-level understanding of physical and chemical processes at surfaces, with particular emphasis on dynamical aspects. This book is a reference in the field.
Book Synopsis Molecular Beam Scattering from Solid Surfaces: A Critical Review by : Joe N Smith (Jr)
Download or read book Molecular Beam Scattering from Solid Surfaces: A Critical Review written by Joe N Smith (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reviews experimental studies of gas-surface scattering reported in the period from approximately 1969 through the first half of 1972. It emphasizes rare gas scattering from a variety of metal single crystals at incident energies from about 0.025 eV to nearly 20 eV, and includes a discussion of the various scattering regimes in that energy range. In addition, light gas scattering from LiF and certain highly structured metal surfaces is surveyed. The observation of single-phonon inelastic events are described. Recent studies of desorption phenomena are reviewed. A correlation of the various results is made and areas in which questions remain are indicated. Apart from parametric correlations, no attempt is made to assess the validity of the various theoretical models that have been developed to describe the scattering process. (Author).

Download or read book Scattering of Thermal Energy Gas Beams by Metallic Surfaces written by John J. Hinchen and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modulated molecular beam techniques have been employed to measure the spatial distribution of rare gases and atmospheric gases scattered from surfaces of polycrystalline platinum, tantalum, nickel and tungsten. In some cases, molecular velocity changes which occured during collisions between the beam and surface were determined through observations of shifts in the phase of the detector signals. Diffuse scattering of the gases was observed from contaminates surfaces. Collision induced molecular velocity changes of rare gases scattered from platinum were determined and used to calculate energy accommodation coefficients; the results were correlated with changes in scattering distributions. Accommodation coefficients for helium and neon obtained with a clean platinum surface agree with literature values for clean metallic surfaces as determined by a hot filament technique. Calculations were made of the influence of diffuse and lobular scattering on the lift and drag coefficients of flat plates in free-molecular flow. For more dense flows, the dependence of the extent of the slip flow region on the tangential momentum accomodation coefficient was evaluated. (Author).

Book excerpt: From proceedings of the International Summer Institute in surface science; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (28 Aug 1973). Molecular beam - surface scattering experiments, the nature of elastic and inelastic scattering, and the information obtained from detection of the angular distribution and kinetic energy of the scattered particles are described. The types of energy exchange that take place between a gas atom or molecule and the surface atoms and the theories that have been developed to explain some of these energy transfer processes are discussed. Finally the results of some experiments are reviewed, and directions for future research are pointed out. (JFP).
