Tse captures the voices of Cantonese Protestant Christians from the San Francisco, Vancouver, and Hong Kong metropolitan areas as they reflect on their efforts to adapt to secular communities while retaining their identity and beliefs. In the context of the transpacific region between Asia and the Americas, the “Pacific Rim” refers to a window of time in which predominant narratives emphasized skilled migration and the rise of multicultural societies—the era before the rise of Chinese nationalism in 2012 and the Hong Kong protests. Diasporic Cantonese Protestant Christians of this time were frequently portrayed as a homogenous people bringing their Chinese culture and Christian communities from Hong Kong to cities such as Vancouver and San Francisco—sometimes contesting liberal developments like same-sex marriage but also offering new democratic awareness. Sheets of Scattered Sand challenges that depiction of Cantonese Protestants with authentic voices from the community. Based on research done in the San Francisco Bay area, Vancouver, and Hong Kong, author Justin K.H. Tse finds that Cantonese Protestants consider themselves “sheets of scattered sand”—politically disparate and ideologically fragmented, but united in a sense of tension with the secular world. Tse’s work serves as an illuminating prequel to contemporary stories of the Hong Kong protests and a newly emergent Asian American politics, underscoring the importance of incorporating these voices in wider reflections on Christianity and secularity.

Provided - however - that the assumptions on which The theory is founded are well understood. But. indeed. engineering costly experience shows that "Nothing can be more disastrous than a theory" when applied To a real task outside of practical limits of the assumptions made. Because of an homonymous identity with the considered problem. J.T.P The growing interest in Isodyne Stress Analysis and the related experience of the author show that the major monograph and reference book on the subject, Isodyne Stress Analysis by Jerzy T. Pindera and Marek-Jerzy Pindera, [27], does not of contain sufficiently detailed data on the theories and techniques experimentation. The purpose of this work is to close this gap. Thus, this work is an extension of Isodyne Stress Analysis and complementary to it. Consequently, only a short outline of the theory ofisodynes is given in Chapter 2. Only the basic concepts and relations are presented to provide the link between the underlying analytical and optical theories and the experimental techniques. One of the major purposes of a preface is to formulate and explain the chosen frame of reference in a condensed form, even when some components of it are discussed in the text. A main issue of the underlying frame of reference pertains to the roles of the abstract thinking and of the observation in cognition of reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''It is true that "Nothing is more practical than a theory" Provided - however - That the assumptions on which the theory is founded Are well understood. - But, indeed, engineering experience shows that "Nothing can be more disastrous than a theory When applied to a real problem Outside of the practicailimits of the assumptions made", Because of an homonymous identity With the problem under consideration. " (J. T. P. ) The primary objective of this work is to present the theories of analytical and optical isodynes and the related measurement procedures in a manner com patible with the modem scientific methodology and with the requirements of modem technology pertaining to the usefulness of the stress analysis proce dures. The selected examples illustrate some major theses of this work and demonstrate the particular efficiency of the isodyne methods in solving the technologically important problems in fracture mechanics and mechanics of composite structures including new materials. To satisfy this objective it was necessary to depart from the common practice of presenting theories and techniques of experimental methods as a compatible system of equations and procedures without mentioning the tacitly accepted assumptions and their influence on the theoretical admissibility of analytical expressions and the reliability of the experimental or analytical results. It was necessary to design a more general frame of reference which could allow to assess the scientific correctness of isodyne methods and the reliability of experimental results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you took a blank calendar and looked at it month by month, would each month hold a special, life-changing anniversary? Could you fill the calendar with events which have shaped you and stood out, or would it be filled with blanks? Do you seek a life where you create more meaningful moments which can become important anniversaries as you look back? Are you spending your life in pursuit of something worthy, or are you drifting around from day to day as time passes by? These philosophical questions are the guiding principle behind a series of events framed over 11 days in a searing Midwestern summer fixated on devotion to the dying, accumulation of others’ possessions, searching for purpose, and hoping for escape. On nights racked by storms accompanied by the strumming hymns of insects, through days burned by the sun and wind, and on a day the color of whales, events unfold to confront each character with the truth of their life and the path their calendar has set them on, with the last day ending in moments of crucial realizations and hope.
