Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited paper, the reviewed research papers, the discussants' comments on the latter, and the workshop memoranda of the fourth IFIP WG 8. 1 International Working Conference on "Information System Concepts", with the subtitle "An Integrated Discipline Emerging" (ISC04). It was held in Leiden, The Netherlands, 20-22 September 1999. The previous three ISCO conferences were subtitled "An In-depth Analysis", "Improving the Understanding", and "Towards a Consolidation of Views". Their proceedings were published in 1989, 1992, and 1995, respectively. The ISCO conferences were instigated by the former Task Group FRISCO (an acronym for "FRamework of Information System Concepts"), charged by the IFIP Working Group 8. 1 with the task of proposing a conceptual framework for the information system field. Its report, entitled "A Framework of Information System Concepts" (the "FRISCO Report" for short), is available on the World Wide Web via the address: http://www. wi. leidenuniv. nl/~verrynstlfrisco. html or may be downloaded directly as a condensed Word-6 file from: ftp://ftp. leidenuniv. nl/pub/rullfri-full. zip The FRISCO Report forms a significant contribution to the long-lasting quest of our community towards developing a scientific outlook on the field of information systems. Clarifying the varied nature of many diverging views - some of which may not easily be reconciled - the report does propose a coherent, consistent and partially formalised framework of concepts.

Book excerpt: Rough set approach to reasoning under uncertainty is based on inducing knowledge representation from data under constraints expressed by discernibility or, more generally, similarity of objects. Knowledge derived by this approach consists of reducts, decision or association rules, dependencies, templates, or classifiers. This monograph presents the state of the art of this area. The reader will find here a deep theoretical discussion of relevant notions and ideas as well as rich inventory of algorithmic and heuristic tools for knowledge discovery by rough set methods. An extensive bibliography will help the reader to get an acquaintance with this rapidly growing area of research.

He died of a heart attack on the 5th of June 2005 while climbing Mount Everest in Nepal. Milne (48) lived an active life: combining his three ‘careers’ seemingly effortlessly. He was a hi-tech entrepreneur, an AI researcher and a passionate mountaineer. Mount Everest was last on his list of the highest summits on each continent. He was only 400 meters from the top when he died. This publication commemorates and celebrates the life of Rob Milne. It covers all facets of Rob Milne's life and contains contributions by the people who have known him well and pay tribute to his life and his legacy. Rob Milne is survived by his wife Val and his two children Alex and Rosemary. After he died, his wife said in a radio interview: “Rob died at the top, doing what he loved.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the 10th Int- national Conference on Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, Data Mining, and Granular Computing, RSFDGrC 2005, organized at the University of Regina, August 31st–September 3rd, 2005. This conference followed in the footsteps of inter- tional events devoted to the subject of rough sets, held so far in Canada, China, Japan,Poland,Sweden, and the USA. RSFDGrC achievedthe status of biennial international conference, starting from 2003 in Chongqing, China. The theory of rough sets, proposed by Zdzis law Pawlak in 1982, is a model of approximate reasoning. The main idea is based on indiscernibility relations that describe indistinguishability of objects. Concepts are represented by - proximations. In applications, rough set methodology focuses on approximate representation of knowledge derivable from data. It leads to signi?cant results in many areas such as ?nance, industry, multimedia, and medicine. The RSFDGrC conferences put an emphasis on connections between rough sets and fuzzy sets, granularcomputing, and knowledge discoveryand data m- ing, both at the level of theoretical foundations and real-life applications. In the case of this event, additional e?ort was made to establish a linkage towards a broader range of applications. We achieved it by including in the conference program the workshops on bioinformatics, security engineering, and embedded systems, as well as tutorials and sessions related to other application areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) is an internationally recognised fast-growing field. Since 1989, the number of participants attending Parallel CFD Conferences has doubled. In order to keep track of current global developments, the Parallel CFD Conference annually brings scientists together to discuss and report results on the utilization of parallel computing as a practical computational tool for solving complex fluid dynamic problems. This volume contains the results of research conducted during the past year.Subject areas covered include: novel parallel algorithms, parallel Euler and Navier-Stokes solvers, parallel Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method and parallel multigrid techniques. The content of the book also demonstrates that considerable effort is being made to utilize parallel computing to solve a variety of fluid dynamics problems in topics such as climate modeling, consultation, aerodynamics and in many other areas.Readers of this book will gain a valid insight into the exciting recent developments in Parallel CFD research.
