Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author LaVyrle Spencer presents a beautiful and moving tale of a false marriage that leads to true love. The wedding of Clay Forrester and Catherine Anderson was the social event of the season. It seemed like a page out of a fairy tale. But everything about it—from the formal vows to the magnificent reception—was a lie. Catherine had reluctantly agreed to Clay’s “marriage of convenience”—and the only thing that could threaten their arrangement was the unexpected arrival of love. “A superb story.”—Los Angeles Times “LaVyrle Spencer’s legions of fans are drawn to her fiction because of its uncalculated emotion and the author’s almost old-fashioned sense of integrity.”—Chicago Tribune “LaVyrle Spencer is magic!”—Affaire de Coeur

Now, Laura’s lonely heart has found solace in Dan, Rye’s closest friend. Dan has been a beacon of light in her time of darkness, becoming a father to the child that Rye never knew and giving her a reason to live again. But who could foretell that a wind-roughened sailor with sun-bleached hair would come back into their lives? That Laura’s heart could betray her soul? That Rye would come home again…

Book excerpt: A moving, evocative tale of love, grief, and sisterhood from the author of the “brilliant, tender, and riveting” (John Dufresne, author of I Don’t Like Where This Is Going) The Winters in Bloom. She can hear the music in people’s souls. Mary Beth and her younger sister Leeann are trying to support themselves in their small Southern hometown. Mary Beth works to make ends meet by practicing her own unique talent: “song reading.” By making sense of the song lyrics people have stuck in their heads, Mary Beth can help people make sense of their lives. In no time, Mary Beth’s readings have the entire town singing her praises, including the handsome scientist Ben, who falls hard for Mary Beth and her unearthly intuition. What happens when she can’t make out the lyrics? When Mary Beth reveals a long-muted secret in the community, however, she turns off the music and gives up song reading for good. Soon everyone’s lives are out of tune: Leeann worries she’ll never graduate from high school, and Ben can’t conduct his experiments. Without Mary Beth’s music, the town’s silence is louder than ever. Could it be that all the lyrics to all those foolish love songs really aren’t so foolish after all?

Book excerpt: “Poignant, provocative, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, Pung’s rollicking tale of two worlds is not to be missed.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) After Alice Pung’s family fled to Australia from the killing fields of Cambodia, her father chose Alice as her name because he thought their new country was a Wonderland. In this lyrical, bittersweet debut memoir—already an award-winning bestseller when it was published in Australia—Alice grows up straddling two worlds, East and West, her insular family and the Australia outside. With wisdom beyond her years and a keen eye for comedy in everyday life, she writes of the trials of assimilation and cultural misunderstanding, and of the tender but fraught relationships between three generations of women trying to live the Australian dream without losing themselves. Unpolished Gem is a moving, vivid journey about identity and the ultimate search for acceptance and healing, delivered by a writer possessed of rare empathy, penetrating insight, and undeniable narrative gifts.

Book excerpt: "This thesis is a study of traditional narratives which are recited and received both by villagers and pilgrims in regard to the local pilgrimage (ziarah) tradition in Pamijahan, particularly at Shaykh Abdul Muhyi's sacred site. The narratives will be examined as part of the popular beliefs of Priangan Timur or the eastern part of West Java. Locating them in the wider context of Sundanese oral and written traditions, my investigation will illuminate the nature and function of such traditions in the particular case of Pamijahan. The research will elucidate the role of the kuncen, the custodians of sacred sites, as guides and spiritual brokers who maintain the narratives. It will also be important to investigate the villagers' as well as visitors' view of the kuncen in regard to local pilgrimage. The study will also enhance comparative studies concerned with networks of holy men or saints (wali) on the island of Java (Pemberton 1994; Fox 1991: 20). I want to argue that people respond to, and participate in, saint veneration on pragmatic grounds. However, these grounds are subject to interpretation and contestation in time and space. In redefining their narratives, various individuals, such as custodians, Sufis, and even to some extent government functionaries, are considered to be authoritative persons by virtue of their capacity to conduct and manipulate narratives. As this argument develops, it will be important to understand the modes of signification in the village."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: An “achingly beautiful” memoir about a mother’s mission to rescue her two teenage daughters from the streets and bring them back home (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). After a miserably failed marriage, Debra Gwartney moves with her four young daughters to Eugene, Oregon, for a new job and what she hopes will be a new life for herself and her family. But the two oldest, fourteen-year-old Amanda and thirteen-year-old Stephanie, blame their mother for what happened, and one day the two run off together—to the streets of their own city, then San Francisco, then nowhere to be found. The harrowing subculture of the American runaway, with its random violence, its dangerous street drugs, and its patchwork of hidden shelters, is captured with brilliant intensity in Live Through This as this panicked mother sets out to find her girls—examining her own mistakes and hoping against hope to bring them home and become a family again, united by forgiveness and love. “For all the raw power of this true story and the fearless honesty of the voice telling it, what sticks out for me is the literary craft that shapes every sentence. Debra Gwartney has seen clear to the bottom of her experience, purged it of self-righteousness, and emerged with a stunningly humane and humbled awareness of life’s troubles” —Phillip Lopate

Book excerpt: Immerse yourself in the rich drama of medieval Japan. Set in Japan in the turbulent 12th century, this fast-paced novel recounts the titanic struggle between two Japanese clans--the Heike and the Genji--as they seek to pacify a fractured nation, ultimately turning on each other in their unbridled lust for power. Written by the great Eiji Yoshikawa, this classic work of fiction brings to life the wars, intrigue, feuds, and romance surrounding the most dramatic episode in Japanese history. Yoshikawa begins his tale in the magnificent capital of Kyoto, which has recently fallen into chaos as crime and disorder run rampant. The people are abused by the nobility, while Buddhist monks terrorize courtiers and commoners alike. In despair, the Emperor's calls for help are answered by the Heike and Genji families. Although they succeed in bringing order, they eventually fall out while dividing the spoils of war and plunge the country into even greater turmoil. The book is told through the eyes of Kiyomori, who is the eldest son of Tadamori, the ineffective leader of the Heike clan. Yoshikawa describes the Heike's decline under Tadamori's leadership and the family's descent into poverty. It is only when Kiyomori is appointed to a court position that the Heike's influence grows, much to the displeasure of their rivals, the Genji. Along the way, Kiyomori oversees his clan's ascent, alongside his loyal friend Tokitada. The story ends with the young Ushikawa, the future leader of the Genji clan, abandoning his schooling to take the reins of power in anticipation of the seemingly inevitable war between the Heike and the Genji. Covering nearly 40 years in Tadamori's life, the twists and turns of his personal fate mirror the conflict between his family and the rival Genji clan. The new edition has a foreword by historian Alexander Bennett, who explains the historical backdrop of the novel and its importance as a towering work of historical fiction. Combining raw narrative power, pageantry, and poetry, The Heike Story will enthrall readers interested in the drama and spectacle of ancient Japan.
