Book excerpt: In 1996, Alexander Rumpkin was at the top of his game: he was CEO of America's largest health care organization. His ruthless trampling of people to get there is the story of The Sawdust Pile. Coming of age with two white cousins and a black kid in the segregated South, Alex had none of the tools commonly needed to climb to the top; but he succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams because he allowed nothing and no one to block his path. The Sawdust Pile is a riveting account of boys and the adults they became. Their contradictory relationships are developed with sensitivity and insight-a realistic portrayal of growing up on both sides of the color line in rural Georgia during the forties and fifties. Transitioning to the nineties and modern Atlanta, this story demonstrates with a vengeance that the boys-with all their faults and strengths-were truly 'fathers of the men." ****** A sophisticated critic says: 'This is a fast-paced story of boys becoming men and the lifelong consequences of youthful bonding and conflicts. Elements energizing the characters-competition, survival, domination, love, hatred, loyalty, betrayal, religion, sex, and family-are all in the mix, appearing early in this fascinating world and impacting all that follows. In a highly unusual first novel, the author delivers a bittersweet, provocative probe into the lives of men and women inhabiting The Sawdust Pile-evoking deep emotions, yet satisfying completely." Their conversation invites both craftspeople and religious seekers to join them on a spiritual journey toward fresh insight and inspiration.

Book excerpt: National demands for particleboard panel products and raw materials supply are projected for the 1970's. Demand for particleboard (which includes fiberboard and structural particleboard) is expected to continue rapid growth through the decade. new plant capacity will use dry mill residues wherever possible. Several new plants are expected in the South, and three or four each in California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Northern Rocky Mountains. In the last of the decade, expanding production will turn to use of forest residues, which will shift plant expansion toward the major markets and away from the Northwest. Analysis of production costs indicate that in the Northern Rocky Mountains plants utilizing forest residues cannot profitably compete with plants taht utilize mill residues until the existing mill residues are exhausted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Still remains one of the most beloved and important writers in Appalachian literature. Best known for his acclaimed novel River of Earth (1940), the Alabama native and adopted Kentuckian left an enduring legacy of novels, stories, and poems during his nearly seventy year career. The Hills Remember: The Complete Short Stories of James Still honors the late writer by collecting all of Still's short stories, including his stories from On Troublesome Creek (1941), Pattern of a Man and Other Stories (1976), and The Run for the Elbertas (1980), as well as twelve prose pieces originally published as short stories and later incorporated into River of Earth. Also included are several lesser-known stories and ten never-before-published stories. Recognized as a significant writer of short fiction in his day -- many of his stories initially appeared in The Atlantic and The Saturday Evening Post and were included in The O. Henry Memorial Award Stories and The Best American Short Stories collections -- Still's short stories, while often overshadowed in recent years by his novels and poetry, are among his most enduring literary works. Editor Ted Olson offers a reassessment of Still's short fiction within the contexts of the author's body of work and within Appalachian and American literature. Compiling all of James Still's compelling and varied short stories into one volume, The Hills Remember is a testament to a master writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St. Croix River, the free-flowing boundary between Wisconsin and Minnesota, is a federally protected National Scenic Riverway. The area’s first recorded human inhabitants were the Dakota Indians, whose lands were transformed by fur trade empires and the loggers who called it the “river of pine.” A patchwork of farms, cultivated by immigrants from many countries, followed the cutover forests. Today, the St. Croix River Valley is a tourist haven in the land of sky-blue waters and a peaceful escape for residents of the bustling Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan region. North Woods River is a thoughtful biography of the river over the course of more than three hundred years. Eileen McMahon and Theodore Karamanski track the river’s social and environmental transformation as newcomers changed the river basin and, in turn, were changed by it. The history of the St. Croix revealed here offers larger lessons about the future management of beautiful and fragile wild waters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's time for Annie to put grief behind her and get on with her life. What better way than to go to the State Fair? That innocent first step leads her into a confusing series of events in which she attempts to revive an old love, keep her eighty-year-old cousin out of trouble, finish a quilt left to her by a beloved aunt, and oh, yes, support a new friend suspected of killing her husband. Cousin Sam may be old, but he's not dead yet. His sudden love affair with a brand-new widow shows Annie that it's never too late to love, even though it might be safer not to try to relive the past. The disparate bits of Annie's life slowly come together, as Magda teaches her how to put pieces of fabric together into a pleasing quilt. While she watches Sam and Magda fall in love, she finds herself wondering if she might find a future with Dan, a handsome fireman. But before she can look too far ahead, there's the quilt show to get through. And that's a whole different complication.
