He doesn't want to be the ruler of a vanishing species. Then he meets the beautiful Monifa and rescues her from a crocodile. While he's gone Oskar, Kenjo's okapi cousin, seeks sanctuary in the tower because he no longer feels save of a preserve. They discover that twins have been born. "If all giraffes had twins, our numbers would double and we'd be out of trouble," Kenjo declares. He finds out that nine-banded armadillo has the most multiples and orders Oskar to find out their secret. But there are no armadillos in Africa. What they don't know is that some middle school Texas techies and armadillo lovers will help. Can armadillos really save the giraffe species? When Mosi returns with Monifa. Together they find the answer. This book contains little known facts about African ecosystems, and big ideas, like global interdependance and the difference students can make in the survival of endangered species.

Book Synopsis The Nine-Banded Armadillo by : W. J. Loughry
Download or read book The Nine-Banded Armadillo written by W. J. Loughry and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2024-02-19 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word armadillo is Spanish for “little armored one.” This midsize mammal that looks like a walking tank is a source of fascination for many people but a mystery to almost all. Dating back at least eleven million years, the nocturnal, burrowing insectivore was for centuries mistaken for a cross between a hedgehog and a turtle, but it actually belongs to the mammalian superorder Xenarthra that includes sloths and anteaters. Biologists W. J. Loughry and Colleen M. McDonough have studied the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) for more than twenty years. Their richly illustrated book offers the first comprehensive review of everything scientists know about this unique animal. Engaging both scientists and a broader public, Loughry and McDonough describe the armadillo’s anatomy and physiology and all aspects of its ecology, behavior, and evolution. They also compare the nine-banded armadillo with twenty or so other, related species. The authors pay special attention to three key features of armadillo biology—reproduction, disease, and habitat expansion—and why they matter. Armadillos reproduce in a unique and puzzling manner: females always give birth to litters of genetically identical quadruplets, a strategy not found in any other vertebrates. Nine-banded armadillos are also the only vertebrates except for humans known to contract leprosy naturally. And what about habitat expansion? The authors suggest that the armadillo’s remarkable spread across the southeastern United States may be the consequence of its most notable feature: a tough, protective carapace. Biologists, evolutionists, students, and all those interested in this curious creature will find The Nine-Banded Armadillo rich in information and insight. This comprehensive analysis will stand as the definitive scientific reference for years to come and a source of pleasure for the general public.

Book Synopsis Making Tax Sense by : M. Kevin McGee
Download or read book Making Tax Sense written by M. Kevin McGee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our tax system is a mess. And the reason for that mess is, our tax system is incoherent. A well-designed tax system is like a good jigsaw puzzle: all the pieces fit together snugly, so when the whole thing is fully assembled, it forms a coherent picture. But our current tax system is disjointed, with parts that don't logically fit together. That results in inconsistencies, complexity, loopholes, and distorted incentives. We need a tax system that make sense. As this book shows however, making a traditional income tax coherent is an impossible goal. But coherence is achievable if we adjust our target, and complete the switch to a consumed-income tax -- a system that taxes all income, not when it is earned, but when that income is consumed. The move towards a consumed-income tax was begun decades ago, when we first adopted IRAs and other tax-deferred savings accounts. We just needed to complete the evolution. The book explores a variety of tax issues -- among them savings, small businesses, owner-occupied houses, and corporations -- and develops seven groups of recommended changes. These changes would result in a tax system that would be pro-growth, by eliminating the existing disincentives to saving and investment. But the tax system would also remain progressive, with the wealthy taxed as much as and perhaps even more than currently. That combination could make the recommended changes attractive to members of both parties, and might bring to a close the political seesaw in tax policy that we've experienced over that last several decades.
