Book excerpt: Saved from Desert Sands, edited by Kelsey Granger and Imre Galambos, unites historians, codicologists, art historians, archaeologists, and curators in the study of material culture on the Silk Roads. The re-discovery of forgotten manuscript archives and sand-buried cities in the twentieth century has brought to light thousands of manuscripts and artefacts. To date, textual content has largely been prioritised over physical objects and their materiality, but the material aspects of these objects are just as important. Focusing primarily on the material and non-textual, this volume presents studies on silver dishes, sealing systems, manuscripts, Buddhist paintings, and ceramics, all of which demonstrate the centrality of material culture in the study of the Silk Roads.

Book excerpt: Sand, Wind, and War records the work, travels and adventures of one of the last of the great British explorers, a man who served in both world wars and carved out a special niche in science through his studies of desert sands. Ralph Alger Bagnold was born in 1896 into a military family and educated as an engineer. Posted to Egypt in 1926, he was one of a group of officers who adapted Model T Fords to desert travel and in 1932 made the first east-west crossing—6,000 miles—of the Libyan desert. Bagnold established such a name for himself that in World War II he was again posted to Egypt where he founded and trained the Long Range Desert Group that was to confound the German and Italian armies. Bagnold’s fascination with the desert included curiosity over the formation of dunes, and beginning in 1935 he conducted wind tunnel experiments with sand that led to the book The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes. Eventually, he was to see his findings called on by NASA to interpret data on the sands of Mars. He devoted subsequent research to particle flow in fluids, and also served as a consultant to Middle Eastern governments concerned with the interference of sand flow in oil drilling. Sand, Wind, and War is the life story of a man who not only helped shape events in one part of the world but also contributed to our understanding of it. It is a significant benchmark not only in the history of science, but also in the annals of adventure.

Book excerpt: Ancient Egyptian healer and scribe Sesha is ready for another role: spy. Be sure to read Sesha’s first adventure, The Lost Scroll of the Physician. Forced to flee Thebes or face death, Sesha and her friends, Paser and Reb, travel up the Nile and into the desert in search of a hidden oasis. Led by a freed spy, they plan to rescue Pharaoh’s daughter Princess Merat, given to a Hyksos chieftain against her will. Before they can get there, though, they have to battle lurking crocodiles, endless dunes, and blinding sandstorms. When the group finally straggles into the Hyksos camp, they find the rebels preparing for combat. But as Sesha and her friends spend time with the rival tribe, the lines in the sand begin to blur. When she takes on a dangerous secret mission and learns about a prophecy that could change the course of history, Sesha has to decide where her future — and the real danger — lies.

Leon Crossheart is an adventurer, a hero, a hunter of ghouls... and a ghoul himself ! His strength and regenerative ability are unmatched, but this power comes at a price: He’s reviled by the very people he strives to protect. However, there is one girl he saved who sees beyond his frightening appearance. Alice is so grateful that she wants to be his disciple, and she isn’t taking no for an answer! Will she bring light into his dark and bloodstained life, or will he keep her—and therefore his own salvation—out of reach?

It started when Thomas Edison invented the first light bulb more than 150 years ago. Then, as electric light became more common, light pollution began to take over cities and towns. Today, in urban centers all over the world, the stars in the sky aren't visible. Millions of people have never seen the Milky Way. In Saving the Night, we discover how plants and animals have adapted over millions of years to survive and thrive in the dark, and how artificial light can upset the balance of entire ecosystems. But there are ways we can take back the night for animals, plants and us. It starts with the flick of a switch.

Book excerpt: Africa, Your righteous disorders Break my heart ... — Kabedoopong Piddo Ddibe’st, Uganda “This Anthology exposes both the sorry-state and unspoken nature of Africa, and Her people, in this recent time. A masterpiece that wakes up an African to have a conscious conscience.” –Udekwe Chikadibia Enugu State, Nigeria As pollution and global warming threaten the balance of life on our planet, the beautiful continent of Africa is in crisis. In the wake of greedy corporations mining valuable natural resources, and through the exchange of rights to such resources, large regions of Africa are under a terrible reign of social injustice, with atrocities including ritualistic rape and murder, artificial war, induced famine and extreme political corruption. In an anthology created to illuminate these atrocities, twenty-one African poets share over one hundred poems that highlight the problems plaguing their homeland. Through poignant verse, these poets offer often shocking insight into a land known for its generosity of spirit and warmth of its people who bravely stand strong in the face of unthinkable tragedy.

Local Bedouins, foreign farm workers and their families, Saudi royalty, assorted Westerners, and fellow Americans share their desert world with Kirk. Her sincere curiosity, empathy, and warmth toward these new friends make her story entertaining as well as enlightening. There is a freshness to Kirk's perspective that puts the reader squarely in her shoes as she struggles to assimilate a culture so alien to her own and to embrace an adventure that few have the chance to experience. Martha Kirk shows her pioneering Texas spirit in the pages of Green Sands as she gamely kills camel spiders in the house, bravely risks imprisonment while driving the farm's pickup truck, and lovingly shares meals with Bedouin women and their children.
