Book Synopsis Everyday Extraordinary by : Christopher M. Gemerchak
Download or read book Everyday Extraordinary written by Christopher M. Gemerchak and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of fetishism has long been a window through which philosophers, psychoanalysts and cultural anthropologists have looked in order to critically examine the nature of beliefs, sexual interests and material values, and it remains today a vital interpretive paradigm. The enduring interest in fetishism gives testimony to the fact that its status and significance have yet to be fully resolved. In the attempt to further clarify this ambiguous and often mystifying phenomenon, the contributors to Everyday Extraordinary: Encountering Fetishism with Marx, Freud and Lacan have taken a fresh look at the fundamental dynamic of fetishism through the lenses of its most influential interpreters?not only Marx, Freud and Lacan, but also Derrida, Mannoni and Pietz. In this collection of essays, the philosophical approach joins forces with the psychoanalytic, and the psychoanalytic with the aesthetic and mythological, often with striking results. Emerging from the essays contained in this volume is a notion of fetishism as a response to a crisis of meaning: personal, social or religious. The fetish mediates the crisis that arises when a system of meaning and identity is confronted with something that threatens it with dissolution, whether this threat arises from an excessive and traumatic figure of alterity, or from the loss of the ground on which ones certainty had been staked. And the stakes of this confrontation are indeed high, as the fetish is here seen as an object having a profound influence on the life of desire, now leading to a symbolic blossoming of the mundane, now into perverse repetition and the refusal of change.

Book Synopsis Scented: The Status Quo by : Richard E. Bonostro
Download or read book Scented: The Status Quo written by Richard E. Bonostro and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2020-08-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scented: The Status Quo is set in a dystopian society where males of the Rune Party depend on female genes to become fully mature intelligent beings. The Mantle, an all-female watchdog group, seeks to usurp political power to even the plain field. The Mantle had long rumored that the Ma’at, an all-powerful woman would emerge to redeem women as rulers once again, but powerful forces amongst the males are determined to maintain the status quo—at all cost. Scented: The Status Quo establishes the struggle between the sexes in a world where it does matter who you sleep with. Males are born mentally neutered until they are scented by a woman. Parents carefully choose educated women whose DNA will complete the man they have cultivated. Evan Abram is one such man. He soon learns after inheriting his father’s job as Commissioner of Surveyors that his wife, Marla, is an agent for the Mantle. Evan’s career is on the fringes, and an ambitious senator consistently nips at Evan’s heels for the capture of the legendary Ma’at who has been reversing key scentings. Despite these setbacks, Evan rebounds in the arms of his secretary who helps him to regain his confidence. Meanwhile, the ambitious senator launches his secret plan to usurp the two opposing political parties: The Mantle and the Rune.

Book excerpt: Playwright and screenwriter Martin Sherman dramatizes outsiders--gay, female, foreign, disabled, different in religion, class or color--skipping over quicksand as they strive to survive. This book analyzes and evaluates Sherman's work, while correcting previously published errors and establishing the flavor of the critical debate. Devoting more attention to such internationally acclaimed works as Bent and Mrs. Henderson Presents, it also considers less well known and even unpublished and unproduced scripts as well as his working relationships with the luminaries of stage and screen who have appeared in, directed, and produced his plays and screenplays.
